Download the radlinker:

http://www.computerbase.de/downloads/software/systemprogramme/grafikkarten/radlinker_radclocker/

Install..

Press the desktop with your right button and choose radlinker..

Go to direct x..

On the box below go to vertex shader version..

Choose 1.0 (the others did not work for me)

This fixed the leader animationss on my ati laptop with ati 320 chipset.. Should probably work also on ati 340es and who knows on what else..

But the terrain is still black..

I'm interested, but could you provide a bit more info on this fix? Like what a radlinker is and what its doing? What kind of computer you have, how much ram, and what cpu?

I'm a little leary about downloading 3rd party applications w/out knowning more about it. Not worth a whole computer just to play Civ.

but definitely THANKS for presenting an option for those of us with 'out of date' laptops!

It is a tweaking utility for ati videocards..

The link I posted is the first one I found on google for which you do not have to register..

Radclocker lets you overclock the card and radlinker lets you
tweak the direct3d / opengl settings..

My computer is hp ze4700 with 2.6ghz athlon processor / 512 mb ram..

The game would be ok (especially without sounds).. If the terrain was not black..

Now I know about the "reveal the map with wonder builder" (ctrl w) fix.. But it kind a spoils it for me..

Thanks- I may try it. I'm worried because I'm getting crashes as well as the graphics issues that it may not be worth it to try all these work-arounds. At some point I will probably return the game and wait for the mac version. But it is probably worth one more try, right? Its civ after all...

I'm on a Compaq Presario 1.8ghz Athlon 2500+, with Radeon IGP 320M and 512mb of ram.

What driver are you using for your video card? I saw somehwere that they recommend a 5.10, but I'm running 6.14.10.

I have radlinker version 2.033 and 6.14.10.6436 ati driver from 15.5.2004..

If you have a new mac.. I guess you are better off playing a version for that..

The mac is from this spring, and the guys on the mac forum here were pretty sure it would work out. It is at least as good as the PC or better in every spec, and most importantly, the card supports T&L (a 64mb Radeon 9700). Hopefully since there aren't very many models of macs and therefore not as many cards/drivers, the guys at Aspyr can figure out how to make the game be compatible with my video card.
