After having played a few days on Gamespy I have a few ideas on making the multiplayer part MUCH better, and I report some multiplayer bugs too. I opened the thread here cause mre people see it here.
So:

1. This feature is the most important: There should be an option to give the control over your civ temporary to the AI. You don't quit the game, the AI plays for you for a few minutes. It's very useful if you have something to do while playing, but only for a few minutes. After you are ready to play again you just take the control back from the AI. Because the game turns are often very fast, this would be an EXTREMELY useful feature.

2. In team games we actually see if the enemy team is pinging somewhere. It's good if your ping can be seen by everyone in other games, but if you are permanent allied with someone, then your pings should only be seen by him.

3. The game list in the lobby is jumping around, it's such an amateur mistake by Gamespy. Fix it plz! There should be a refresh button, and the gamelist shouldn't be refreshing all the time. If it's not fixed soon, it will be a bigger issue later, because when there are more games the list will move even faster, and it will be practically impossible to join a certain game.

4. In the lobby there should be a function to join a ceratin game by typing the game name.

5. There are problems if someone is joing a game in progress. WHY? Optimize the code, because these problems and waiting times are not necessary. I think joining is buggy: someone joined a game, he was in the game, could chat and manage his units, but the game still told that he was joining, and we couldnt play. When he quit and joined again the same problem occured. So we had to tell him to leave and we could continue playing.

6. In the game list in the lobby there should be MUCH more information about games. There should be columns like: how long ago the game started, the size of the map, the game speed(epic, normal, quick), the game turn time(none, snail, slow, medium, fast, blazing) and the year the game is in(1780AD for example)

7. When joining a game in progress and choosing an avaible civilization you should see the actual game scores, so you can choose the best civ avaible.

8. Passwording your CIV is useful if you leave the game for a few minutes, then later rejoin, and you don't want others to occupy it. So concerning this, I think passwording your civilization when you start the game is just not useful. You don't know if you will quit the game later, or you will want to rejoin. And if you password your civ, and you don't plan rejoining later, your CIV will be managed by the AI from then on. I think you should only be able to password you civ, when you are retiring from a game.

If you have ideas/opinions about my suggestions plz post them :). I really hope the first one will be implemented... I think the developers didn't think that multiplayer can be this good, and thought that it will be only some hardly useable, not really important element of the game, so they didn't work much on gameplay lobby. But eventually multiplayer became soo good, that it's the core compononet of the game now.

hmmm... I was thinking quite much about these. And after one hour on this crowded forum only 2 people looked it. No one plays multiplayer?

Maybe people were put off posting by the pointless multiposting?

From what i get of the multiplayer scene is the best suggestion to move away from Gamespy totaly. That service seems to suck, Jowood made a contract with it and i think ended it again earlier because multiplayer was simple not possible with it (Spellforce had a lot of troubles, thats why Spellforce 2 will not have gamespy anymore as far i heard)

Other than that i can't say much, since i dont have the game yet and so wasnt able to try multiplayer yet.

There already is a "Refresh" button in the multliplayer screen... it just doesn't do anything.

I agree, the MP interface is so bad it is laughable. Apparently the guy who wrote it expected there to be 17 games of Civ going on at any given time around the world. Plus, he's a lazy idiot, since he didn't even think about his job for 2 seconds.

Changes to make:

1) Remove the automatic refresh. When I want it to refresh, I will say so.

2) Remove the idiot sorting buttons. They are so stupid I can't believe that guy still has a job.

3) Replace them with these three tab buttons: "Join a New Game," "Join a Private Game", "Rejoin a game in progress." Doing this would demonstrate that the programmer actually considered what the program was supposed to accomplish.

4) Clicking one of those buttons HIDES all the other games. If I want a new game, WTH would I want to see a long list of private games I cannot join? Why are they even there? The really stupid thing is, sorting is actually _harder_ than just hiding games we aren't interested in.

5) Always sort the game by ping, and color-code the number so we know if it is an acceptable ping or not.

6) You know all those games that report 0 ping? WHY ARE THEY DISPLAYED? I can't do anything with them. Why do I care about their existance? What ****** thought it was a good idea to display dozens of games I CANNOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE DO ANYTHING WITH?

7) The one new button that is not on any other online strat game - the join a game in progress button - the one button guaranteed to confuse everyone - is the one button not documented on the screen.

Honestly, the guy who wrote this interface is criminally incompetent. And it shakes my faith in Sid that he let his game ship with this crap plastered on top of it.

Why do they destroy this extremely well made game with Gamespy? It could be so great in MP... just needs a little work and COMPETENCE to make multiplayer way better. Of course Gamespy staff lacks these both...

I agree that this would be a most useful addition. It's like a BRB button that allows you to get some tea without interrupting the flow of the game for the other players.

I also find that this should have been posted in the multilpayer forum :) Perhaps a benevolent moderator will move it?

There is a similar thread in the multiplayer forum too...

That's not very practical since it means the same discussion will be spread over multiple threads, and people don't read the whole story and/or offer repeats of the same input.

But it's a nice way to get your thread count up. :mischief: Do you sell linen? :p

Bump.

MP could be just great but gamespy only gets my blood boiling.

And about those 0 ping games I always join them! I have more succes joining zero ping games then pinged games, weird i know.

Gamespy hasn't even been working properly lately. IE, The BASIC FUNCITONALITY of being able to JOIN SOMEONE ELSE'S GAME or HOST YOUR OWN is failing. And yes, I am INSIDE THE DMZ OF MY ROUTER, so I am properly configured network wise and have NO SOFTWARE FIREWALLS interfering with Civilization IV.

I agree completely with the original poster. A few days ago, I spent 5 hours in a really fun multiplayer game, but then I starving, so I had to go get something to eat. So, I retired from the game, and came back 15 minutes later to continue. Now, what happens?

It was irritatingly difficult to even FIND the game I was playing! If I hadn't remembered the name (which thankfully I did) I wouldn't stand a chance. How about adding a feature showing "most recent game played" or "most recent players"? That would make it a lot easier!

When I eventually found the game, battling against the ever-refreshing game-list, I discovered that suddenly the game was FULL!! Someone had taken over control of my dear Indians that I had been playing for 5 hours! And yes, I DID password-protect my civ. What is this?? Isn't password-protection working?

Other things I've noticed:
- When chatting during the game, from time to time (for some unknown reason) I am no longer able to write "!", "?" and ' as they get replaced by \ and some other signs. What is this? Am I the only one who has experienced this?

- Also, when there is a vote about whether to keep waiting or continue playing when a player quits, you can chat with the other players in a separate window. When doing so, there is a bug so that the colour-code is not interpreted correctly, meaning that when I say "Hi!", it shows as <colour=221.332.442>[Username says: "Hi!"]</colour> or something like that. It's just funny! :)

All in all, MP games sure are a lot of fun, but a few quick and easy fixes (such as the ones that have been mentioned in this thread) would enhance the experience significantly.

When I quit a game and joined again it also said the game was full, but I did manage to rejoin by trying to join anyway typing in my password. Did you try joining the game even though it said it was full?

Yes, I tried joining, but it didn't work... Of course, there is a chance that I by accident clicked on the game above / below in the list, because of the constantly changing gamelist. Maybe I should have tried more times... But I have heard other people complaning about password-protection issues.
