Has anyone succeeded in getting the game to work properly graphics-wise with an Intel Graphics Controller? I have an Intel(R) 82852/82855 Graphics Controller, and there seems no escape from Black Terrain and Cheshire Cat.

oriel, I have the same video card. If you get it figured out, please let me know what you did . . . thanks!

I am having the same exact problem you guys. Why o why. I really want to play but without seeing the ground it is impossible.

Yup, I got an Intel Gfx Controller too - apparently the 8xxx series does not support TnL, which is a requirement for Civ4. I'm getting a more decent NVidia one soon to allow me to play this game and many others with more demand on Graphics. If you have one of these cards, a decent enough NVidia/ATI controller is easy enough to get for a small price.

Otherwise, to assist the developers in isolating the problem please ensure that you post your dxdiag details here.

I'm playing with the same card as mentioned in the first post, low settings, animations off, audio off (just in case), and most importantly, with the file C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\XML\Technologies\CIV4TechInfos.xml edited to <bMapVisible>1</bMapVisible> for all starting techs.

No crashes so far. Played some 10 games or so. Multiplayer too. Runs a bit slow but hey! I can play!

Yup, got it to work (very slowly) this way too. Haven't tried multiplayer, but can play at the very least for now.

Wow. It works. It's slow as hell, and I don't have all the fun of exploring, but the game is actually playable.

Yeah, thanks crunch! I can finally play. Hopefully a patch will fix this problem but I don't think it will. Do all of you guys have laptops? What would be a good choice of an ungrade?

Hey, this solution is even better than it's cracked up to be.

Once I turned down all the graphics and sound, and did the XML alteration, I saved it. Then I reloaded, turned all the graphics and sound back up to highest quality and saved again. Then I reloaded once more and ---- it works with high graphics and sound!

It's a bit slow on a standard size world, but my laptop machine is beneath spec! The wonder movies are perfect. The only shortcomings are that I don't have all the fun of exploring a totally mysterious world (the terrain is revealed, but not the location of other civs and goody huts), and I still have Cheshire Cat (which is annoying, but not essential for game play).

This will do very nicely until the patch. I can now start to play the game.

multiplayer works fine - I'm playing with a colleague, we have identical notebooks

but *shh* don't tell anyone :)

as for the high graphics / sound / wonder movies / animations - yep they work (except music stuttering during intro video), but I prefer functionality / speed over beauty - it's your choice

So with some jiggering there's a chance to get it to work on an intel 82825/82855 chipset in a laptop?
I ask because the laptop chipset seems to be different spec than the base intel stuff of this family (I can run Dawn of War which also claims to need HW TnL, even though the chipset officially doesnt have it...and according to the specs I cant play three games I currently have installed because they all need HW TnL too)...so...anyone know if the chipset really does have TnL or what the heck is up with it all? And will Civ 4 run on it?

I haven't tried actually playing it yet, but the black terrain is gone and leaders now have faces on my Dell 700m laptop with the 1.09 patch.

I'll probably check if it's actually playable over the weekend.

[party] Good news, the patch solves the black terrain for my intel 8** chipset.

Works a bit slow, but I'll settle for that.
I didn't even know the patch was out. I had just played civ3 since I liked exploring a lot and it was not the same. I am installing the patch now and will see how it is after. Thanks

The cheshire cat BUG was fixed too :). It runs a tad slow, but i'm getting a new computer in March, and from the specs, I won't have a single problem.

I noticed that the static live resources vanish once in a while and are replaced by moving shadows. Also I noticed 4 dot's of shadow once, but they dissappeared when zooming in.

Intro and wonder movies stutter now, which the didn't before.
I got exactly the same experience.
one thing I can add - my yield button doesnt work. When I click on it nothing comes up.
