So I am planning to go out with my mom to this Indian resturant for the buffet lunch on a Monday. And she said it could get expensive with a tip. How much was she talking here?

First of all, I don't beleive in tipping. I feel that I am paying for a service and nothing more is expected. If the waiters aren't getting paid enough then it's up to them to take it up with their boss or find another job. I don't feel I owe anything extra because I am getting the expected level of service, which is: have food cooked and served to me.

But whenever we go out my mom keeps harassing me so to avoid making a scene I tip a dollar. Oh I should add that at most of the resturants I go to in my area the waiters/waitresses are quite rude.

Anyway, tipping is an American custom, as far as I know. So am I expected to tip at an Indian resturant?

On top of that, it is a buffet lunch, so I serve myself. So if I am expected to tip the waiter then I should just tip myself.

People pay income tax on tips.. when you dont tip them, they pay inome on the money you didn't pay them..... At least thats how it works in Canada....

If I don't pay them then there should be nothing to pay tax on. Anyway, it shouldn't be my problem.

You tip waiters for the good service they provide and their attitude. If they are rude and provide bad service a smaller tip should be paid.

At a buffet you should tip the waiter if he does anything for you. Normally he brings you drinks.

The waiters are providing a service for you. You should not just hold back tips. Waiters are paid to little. You can't be waiter and survive without tips. Not tipping waiters just hurts them, and the businesses won't raise their wages. Also, anyone you meet will probably judge you as rude.

Uh, hopefully there aren't any waiters/waitresses on CFC.

If they are extremely rude, screw the tip.

If you really believe this is the case, I would have to disagree. I have personally been to Canada and Mexico, and we were expected to tip here as well. I do suppose you mean outside of North America.

Now to the point, if the Indian resturant is in America, then yes.

I think not tipping at a bar/pub/tavern is just plain sick.

Tipping is polite, and many people get paid less than min. wage, because their job assumes they will be receiving tips.

I know this one person that used to be a waiter, and he was payed nothing except the tips that he recieved.

Tip them if the service is good -- and tip them if the service is bad? I disagree. Only tip if the service is really good -- and don't tip stupid amounts of money like $10. If the service is bad and they demand a tip -- scowl and walk away.

And, I was never aware this was an issue. I very rarely tip, because I'm paying the resteraunt, who pays the waiter. I don't pay the waiter -- they do.

I was doing some internet reading on the subject.

If the service is lousy, you can tip a penny and they'll get the message!

 LOL tip a penny! I love it!

Or a chocolate coin!

In the U.S. 20% for good service automatic. I'm with Tank Guy. Those of you who don't tip should be ashamed of yourself. These people are making zip on their regular wage.

20 percent is obscene! I think it's rediculous that a tip should be based on the percentage of the order. It should be quality of service IF i'm feeling generous and they are exceptionaly nice to me.

Let me ask you this. If I order a $15 meal and they have to make 10 trips to my table, why should they get paid more for a $50 meal that required only 3 trips?

The number of trips doesn't matter. If they give you everything you want and are nice, give them a fat tip. If they were averahge , tipping 15 or 20% is usually standard. If they were bad make it very small. My mom in 40 years of going out to eat has not tipped only once, and that service was so horrible it wasn't funny Other than the extremely rare occasion where they are mindblowingly horrible, you should always tip.

Don't move to a big city then ew0054. 20% is normal. Anything less than 15% is a slap in the face.

Do you really need them to come to the table 10 times? I think I'd kill a waiter who came by the table that many times. You are paying for the food, ambiance as well service in that tip. If the server sucks then tell them you were (or are) unhappy with their service.

Weren't you saying that you're not leaving your job (even though you think you're not being paid enough) because you can't find anything else right now?

You don't get the picture do you? Waiters get NO MONEY from your order. They are paid VERY VERY LITTLE, below minimum wage.

Why should their getting paid be dependent on your generosity? Rather, you should find it in your heart to tip them.

This is why more restaurants are adding in gratuities to the bills and also splitting the tip money between everyone.

If they were bad they should get nothing so that they realize how rotten they were. If they're always gonna get something (and maybe they consider it enough) then why bother giving better service?

Just an example to illustrate why I felt that percentage makes no sense.

Yeah and I'm stuck, as are they. When you are in a situation you deal with it.

My point is, I don't see why I should have to pay anything extra for a level of service that is expected. Go to the Olive Garden and order spaghetti for $10.95... you could get a box of Spaghetti at Shop Rite for 99 cents. Sure you have to A. cook it yourself and B. serve it at your table. That is what I am paying the extra $10 for. So I should not be obligated to pay anything extra.
