Is there no way to steal tech in this game? If so that's just sad, not to mention totally unrealistic. It seems you can't steal tech either through spy action or through conquest! If there's a way plz let me know otherwise there's just no way to play catch up with more advanced civs. And why can't you sow dissension among civs as in SMAC? I think the SMAC diplomacy model was way way better as it allowed for more flexibility. Also the fact that you can't spend money to hurry production till very late in the game is ********! Are they trying to say that money had no value until that late? I think Sid and co have done a bad job with this game

Well I totally disagree that the game is bad, though it would be nice to be able to steal techs, and gain the ability to rush units closer to when you get the monarchy tech, rather than as part of democracy. However I understand why the latter is so hard to get; if you get a few holy cities and are playing a financial tech . . . well early rushing of units via gold could be very unbalancing.

Hey, remember when you would get techs by taking over cities. They took that crap out of Civ 3 didn't they? I wasn't a big fan of it so I dunno...

Yeah, I never liked enemy getting his greasy little hands on my tech by taking over some miserable outpost city of mine, which I would take back a few turns later. Like some backwater settlement even had my state of the art tech. Spies/probe teams stealing tech was always cool, though.

Idea: Tech stealable both by spies and conquest, but only from 4 to 6 largest cities, depending on map size.

I'm not big on stealing technologies. Even for the later difficulties, it doesn't seem worth while.

Thief, did you have to post this on so many forums though? I'm suprised you have not been banned for it yet.

imo whenever the original capital city falls to enemy hand , it should be a free tech for the conqueror. make it a one off thing, so those aggressive civs gets more reward.

ok I agree with most of that, I hated it when an outpost falling to some backward civ would give them my prized tech but I still think that a little espionage wouldn't hurt. Put a cap on it by all means like Kissamies and Redknight suggest. I still maintain that the ability to conduct propoganda via spies and discredit other civs would be great fun

I'm glad others have noticed this.

I look at both sides and find it hard to decide. While in earlier versions I liked the bonus of gaining a free tech when seizing another civ's city, it was frustrating when having to give up one of my own.
Another things that was always frustrating is when I was more advanced than my rivals, they would get one of my cities and one of my techs, but taking one of theirs yeilded nothing but a bit of gold.

I like the idea of lilmiting it to the largest cities, or something similar.

I have to say that I agree with previous poster that getting a tech by taking over an outpost or city was something better left out of the game.
However, I do like the idea of being able to send in a spy to steal a tech.

It used to be that the likely-hood of getting a tech was rather dependant upon the development of the city being conquered. A useless outpost (with few upgrades) wasn't likely to give up any tech, but a more developed place would.

Check out this thread for a mod that does that (vaguely). Basically, you get a percentage of the points needed to research a tech instead of the full tech itself. The amount of points you get is based on the size of the city captured.

Not so sure. Internet gave me a space race win when I was researching Ecology while a little behind on tech. One tech I received was Fusion. Two cities building the final parts (I also had space elevator). End of game.

I agree totally. If you are behind capturing a city should yield you a tech you don't have that the majority of the people do. Spies roles should include tech stealing. They have dumbed down the spies in this version so much that I tend to build very few of them as they aren't very useful.
