So I was toying with the idea of a free-for-all succession game. The idea is that anyone can pick up the save any time and play their turns. (With reasonable restrictions, of course, as outlined below.)

That's the gist of it. :) More specifically, here's what you do:

  1. You open this thread.
  2. You find the post with the latest save, and download it.
  3. You post a message here saying you are playing the turn (so that while you are doing so, somebody else doesn't get the same idea).
  4. You play 10 turns in the game.
  5. You post the turn log here (that is, what you did, and hopefully an explanation of why you did it). In addition to the post log, it would be great if you posted a screenshot with the globe view of the nation, and the contents of the F9 screen. This way, people can see what's going on without necessarily downloading the save.

Additional rules and suggestions:

  • You cannot play two turns in a row.
  • Please treat this as you would your own baby SG. So, don't get the save and do something stupid, like declare war on everybody in a clearly losing situation.
  • Use common sense and follow the general style of play set by previous players. For example, if you get a turn with a war going on, and the previous player was about to capture four enemy cities, don't just sign peace. Finish what has been started. :) While change of policy can be good for a nation, we don't want to tear it apart with conflicting decisions every ten turns. :)
  • Don't fall prey to the one-more-turn syndrome. 10 turns is all you get.
  • Noobs and settlers welcome. :) Don't lurk. Play! This is why this is a free-for-all. :)

I think this should provide a good learning experience for all. :)

The Game
Difficulty: Noble
Game Speed: Normal
Map: Continents
Size: Standard
Climate: Temperate
Sea Level: Medium
Era: Ancient
Civ: Random - Egyptians, Hatshepsut (Spiritual - No Anarchy, Creative - +2 culture per city)

I played the first 30 turns to kick us off. :) As things are starting to get interesting now, 10 turns per person should do fine. :)

(1) 4000BC - We are off to a pretty nice start here. There are clams and sheep and marble, all immediately available in the start location. The settler also starts out on the coast, and with access to fresh water. What more could we want? :) Thebes founded immediately.

01-Thebes.jpg

We also start research on animal husbandry so we can make use of the sheep and see if there are any horses around to carry our war chariots.

(4) 3880BC - The borders of Thebes have expanded. This reveals a nice river to the north and a corn resource nearby.

(8) 3720BC - Our initial warrior pops a hut, and lo' the villagers teach us the secrets of Fishing! We also discover a hill with gold in it. :)

(9) 3680BC - A warrior is built in Thebes. We set him to defend, and start on another one. We also discover some grapes growing near by the golden hills. This is starting to look like a nice location for another city. :)

(12) 3560BC - Thebes grows in size to population 2. Since the food potential of our starting size is not too huge and the next growth would only occur in 12 turns, I change production to make a worker. This way, we can improve the land some (making use of the sheep) to produce more food.

(13) 3520BC - Animal Husbandry is researched. Research starts on Mining. We have some marble nearby, so it would come in useful to to able to utilize it, for which we need Masonry, which comes after Mining. This also reveals some horses just where our warriors are exploring, and another one just in the Thebes' city radius. Yes, nice starting location, indeed.

02-Overview.jpg

(14) 3480BC - Buddhism has been founded in a distant land.

(15) 3440BC - Our warriors pop another hut, and we gain 39 gold.

(16) 3400BC - The exploring warrior defeats a wolf and gains 1 experience.

(19) 3280BC - Mining is discovered. Work starts on Masonry.

(20) 3240BC - Our warriors defeat another pack of wolves, and are promoted with Woodsman I, so they can make even better use of the forests that seem to abound on our continent and maybe one day be able to move faster through the woods.

(24) 3080BC - A worker is built in Thebes and immediately sets to work on the sheep. In the mean time, we are training another warrior in Thebes.

(25) 3040BC - Another hut is examined and yields 45 gold.

(27) 2960BC - We discover Masonry, so we can now make use of our Marble. As soon as we get any wonders that need it and are worth producing, that is. :) This strikes me as a good time to research hunting. Another warrior is finished in Thebes. He goes off exploring, and while I am waiting for the city to grow further, I queue up Barracks. The idea is that once the city grows to size 3, we would switch to settler.

(28) 2920BC - Yet another pack of wolves is killed off by our exploring warrior. Hindusims is founded in a distant land.

Nothing exciting happens in the last two turns.

At the end of the thirty turns, it appears that we have a nice little piece of the continent. Hopefully, we will be able to find some neighbors.

03-Overview.jpg

And we are still doing alright compared to our rivals. :)

Now go and make Egypt the greatest nation on the planet. :D

Meh, I'll give it a try since it's been a while:)
Hello btw I'm a newbie to the forums:)

Here's how things went down:

2400 BC - So we have 3 warriors, 2 of them exploring opposite each other, and 1 garrisoned in the city, with the city set on building settlers, and research set to bronze working. Oh, and one worker building roads. We've done a lot of exploring, but now need to concentrate on grabbing some of these nice resources. I move the warrior out of the city (protection isn't much of an issue right now since the city's culture border is wide enough to stave of barbs, and citizens are happy enough without the warrior atm) towards the north to scout for any barbs nearby in anticipation of settlement. The warrior at the west continues exploring westwards, and finally sees the bare outline of Tokugawa's city.

I also emphasize commerce in my city, repositioning one of the worked areas from a forest tile to an inland water tile (2 food, 2 commerce), thereby cutting the research time for bronze working from 7 to 6.

2360 BC - Warriors keep exploring. Worker completes roads thereby connecting the horse resource to the city. Move worker to adjacent forest next to marble (not quarried yet) to build roads.

2320 BC - Worker begins building roads on forest.

2280 BC - Not much, exploration and scouting w/warriors.

2240 BC - Settler complete. Barracks automatically queued, but I override it, opting it for building another worker. Move settler north. Couple of flood plains over there, and some other resources. Also follows along the river so founding a city there will connect it quickly to the trade network.

2200 BC - Continue moving settler north. One of my warriors has been scouting near that area, and now sees a lion in his immediate vicinity (but far enough from settler to be safe). Move warrior to an adjacent forest tile, and lion dispapears from sight for now.

Bronze working discovered EOT. Start on pottery. Writing and Horseback riding looks pretty enticing, but commerce is fairly important imo and Egypt's UU is war chariot so if push comes to shove later on I can build a few of those and maintain military presence.

2160 BC: Settler founded Memphis. I debated about the location for a bit and chose the location despite the fact that there are two tiles of overlap with my capital. Computer was recommending a spot that was 1 tile further from the capital, but that location would not be able to make use of either of the two flood plains, and would not gain any new resources (there was basically nothing but a bunch of plains farther north). With the location I chose, I can work both flood plains as well as all of the other resources in my vicinity.

Begin settler immediately in Memphis.

My 1 worker has initiated forest chopping near capital to rush worker.

2120 BC: Not much. Warrior in the west destroys a wolf.

2080: More of the same. Forest cleared by worker at EOT.

2040: Worker built in capital. Put queued barracks at backburner to begin another settler. Original worker moves to adjacent forest/hills tile to prepare for another chop. 2nd worker moves northwest out of city onto a plains and immediately begins road by the river. Completing this single road will connect the two cities together. Warriors spread out to scout for barbs around the next settlement points.

That's it. Basically I figured we need to pump out 4 cities minimum (preferably more) ASAP, grab some resources (there is gold to the east as well as to the west, among a myriad of other resources) and connect them to subsequently focus on infrastructure, commerce and building military. Should tension rise with Tokugawa later on, War Chariots could still be useful for pillaging stuff at worst, and capturing some cities at best if it comes to that. Hopefully we can research alphabet before then though to get some techs out of the deal.

We might also want to grab sailing next (pottery is 1 turn from completing) and try for the great lighthouse. A potentially decent coastline city to the east (with gold/pig), not to mention the capital is also coastal.

Good luck:)

This thread don't have a timing rule, maybe one should be adopted... like
Unlimited "Got It" (it's FFA), 12 or 24 hours to play (makes FFA go faster).

Speaking of which I'm at work so I haven't got it.

Just so you guys know, I think the terminology is "Open SG's" instead of "FFA SG's."

I made two dotmaps to show where we could put our new settlers.

DOTMAP A
Yellow site gets pigs deer 2wines gold.
Red site gets pigs corn and wine.
ffa01-startmap.jpg

DOTMAP B
Where warrior is (Blue site) gets corn and sheep (in the blackness). We'll also score the copper with enough cultural expansion. But we have war chariots (and Iron isn't revealed yet) so I wouldn't prioritize that.

Info explanation and screens next post.

Turn 51 (2000 BC)
Our great warriors move to secure the potential future sites of our cities. Japan has not opened its borders for our troops, so the western explorer heads north into the snow. Meanwhile, back at thebes, Worker moves to forest outside of Thebes citizen work area to gather firewood.

Turn 52 (1960 BC)
Our priests want to research Mysticism now. They leave some hieroglyphics on the wall, hoping that the next ruler gets the idea to build the Oracle. Meanwhile, the other worker moves to a forest on the south end of the peninsula to gather firewood.

Turn 53 (1880 BC)
Our great empire is landlocked. Consider future conflict against the insolent Tokugawa. Our great warriors at the northwest find no more room to explore so they also mobilize to guard our future settlement sites.

Turn 55 (1840 BC)
Since our Empire has marble, our high priests decide to research the secrets of Polytheism and the Parthenon. Meanwhile, our (northern) worker has finished cutting trees and moves on to another clump of trees to his west.

Turn 56 (1800 BC)
Some intrepid settlers emerge from Thebes. They are excited to establish a new costal town marked red on our empire's Dot Map (tm). They hope that the priests research the knowledge of Sailing soon so they will be linked with our capital. Meanwhile, our other worker moves north hoping to connect Mephis and Thebes by road.

Turn 57 (1760 BC)
Our great leader orders the northern worker to cease building a road and cut down some trees for firewood first. Said worker complies and retreats to a forested hill near Memphis.

During the intermission, one of our great warriors is ambushed by a barbaric warrior. Our great warrior skillfully defeats the enemy with minor wounds.
ffa03-warriorlives.jpg

Turn 58 (1720 BC)
To the settlers' dismay, they discover a barbarian settlement to the south, right where they plan to settle! Hungry for pigs, they decide to settle on the Yellow Dot on our map instead. Our leader is furious, she demands an army built (later) to crush the barbarians and take over their city. She encourages the generals not to destroy the city, for the barbarians settled right according to our maps.
ffa04-buildsiteblocked.jpg

Turn 59 (1680 BC)
Thebes begins a War Chariot, for the protection of our cities, and to prepare for our immediate assault of the barbarian citadel.

Turn 60 (1640 BC)
One of our warrior moves near barb city to investigate, but. wounded from the previous fight, stops to heal instead. Our settlers arrive at the city site northwest of the capital, but lack the time to do so in the interim.

*** END... for now. ***

Recommendations for next player:
Please settle our settler first thing.
ffa05-settlermakesit.jpg

Please build road to marble and hook it up ASAP. I'd like the Oracle built. Also it may be good to chop a worker at Memphis. Also research Priesthood as our next tech. Chop Oracle at Thebes for our GP points. You can choose to pick up Metal Casting or try for Theology or Machinery.

Good luck!!

Pay no attention to the troll, even though he is right. I got it now.

I was just trying to be helpful.

Well, no-one's touched this for a while, so I may as well have a go ... first time here and all!

Got it, and will post in a little while....

Well, here goes....

Turn 0 (1640BC)

Picking up from Robo_Mike with a quick review;

Settler in West in good spot, will settle straight away.
We may be a step behind on the way to the Oracle (in my experience it's one of the early Wonders which is reliably built
ASAP by the AI), but Marble & chopping should help us, so will give it a shot.
Settler in four turns from Memphis (faster with chop), but we really need another Worker for our soon-to-be four cities.
Not sure about the site to the East; tempted by Cyan Dot to pull in the Gold, Copper and those Pigs. We could then
go back and fit a city in the middle (maybe 1 to W of Black dot) to pull in the food resources.

ffa1_01_eastern_city.JPG

Also need to get some army going if we plan to take Barb city....

IBT: Discover Polytheism, start researching Priesthood.

Turn 1 (1600BC)

Found Heliopolis; Growth in 8turns, start on an Archer.
Forest Chop at Memphis complete, Settler will pop next turn.

Turn 2 (1560BC)

Memphis pops Settler > Start on Worker to make most of extra Hammers, then should let it grow.
Thebes completes Chariot > Put two turns into Work Boat before Techs allow Oracle.

Chariot heads to join Warrior outside Barb city. Anasazi has three Warriors & no population expansion; won't attack that for a bit.

ffa1_02_barb_city.JPG

Worker in South starts Quarry; in North heads to Heliopolis's Pigs.

IBT: Barb Warrior attacks ours, and we lose! :(

Turn 3 (1520BC)

Worker starts Pig Pasture, Chariot heads West, Settler moves East.

IBT: Discover Priesthood, going for Sailing next so we can get Lighthouses & Galleys to explore further.

Turn 4 (1480BC)

Thebes switches to Oracle.
Settler reaches Black Dot to hook up with Warrior.
War Chariot reaches our Warrior's grave - decide to promote incase it's attacked.

IBT: Anasazi grows to Size 2.

Turn 5 (1440BC)

War Chariot kills a Warrior, then retreats to heal.
Decide to go for fishing village at Cyan dot, Settler moves out.

IBT: Heliopolis borders expand; Tokugawa has built another city.

ffa1_03_toku_expands.JPG

Turn 6 (1400BC)

Elephantine founded in East; Decide to put a few turns into Granary before Sailing allows us a Lighthouse.
Pasture complete at Heliopolis, heading to mine the Gold next.

Turn 7 (1360BC)

Do-be-do, nothing to see here.

Turn 8 (1320BC)

Marble Quarry completed, start on Road.

IBT: Sailing discovered, review logs and see that no-one has Judaism - researching Monotheism. We are running
at -5gpt for 100% science, but it cuts 2turns off research & we have a reserve, so I leave it.

Turn 9 (1280BC)

Worker created at Memphis > War Chariot next.
New Worker sent to farm corn & help growth.
Elephantine switches to Lighthouse. Growing slowly, but will increase somewhat when borders pop and can
reach Pigs ... need Worker out there ASAP.

Turn 10 (1240BC)

Marble connected; Oracle moves to 12turns. Set worker to chop forest next to Marble to create 60Hammers in 3turns
time & accelerate Oracle. Can then either farm the tile to help Thebes grow, or head out East to Elephantine.
Healed War Chariot attacks Anasazi & defeats their experienced Warrior (only
1 left) for half damage; again retreats to heal.

Summary;

We look in good shape; re-jigging the tiles at Thebes reduces the Oracle to 9turns - with the chop in 3 we'll actually
get it in 4 ... hopefully speedy enough. Should probably try to emphasise growth for a while afterwards.

Monotheism in 4turns but losing money on science. Should probably continue at 100% unless Judaism is FIDAL.

War Chariot has killed 2/3 of Barb Warriors at Anasazi, but needs time to heal. A friend is due in 5 from Memphis,
but may not be needed to take city. Heliopolis is on an Archer which can be used to fortify when captured.

Elephantine may not have been as good an immediate choice as site Robo_Mike suggested, but will work out
big in long term. Need to get Worker out there ASAP to connect Copper & improve Pigs.

BTW, we haven't adopted Slavery yet ... not that we have the excess Population to use it at the moment!

Our Civ:

ffa1_04_our_civ.JPG

ffa1_05_demographics.JPG

We have closed Tokugawa off from our lands, and there's space for another city between Elephantine & Memphis,
but we should probably think about growing our cities for a while and getting a Galley out to explore to the South too.
Also need to start connecting up some of the resources & Heliopolis to the rest of the network.

Here's the Save:
