Since Civ4 has been released, I have been unable to log in to the multiplayer "Internet Games" server. Every time I do I get the following error: "The connection to the game browsing server failed."

I've tried the following solutions to no avail:
1. Creating an account using the Civ4 Interface.
2. Creating another account using the GamespyID.com interface.
3. Logging into GamespyID.com and fiddling with the settings on both accounts.
4. Patching to 1.09

I have been dying to try out multiplayer and have failed so far. If anyone has a solution I would be deeply indebted.

oh, one more thing... I tried turning on logging and I get the following error when I try to connect to login:

[34288.718] ERR: Unable to contact the matchmaking server

This error was found in the file:
Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Logs\network-2056_11-29-2005_18-40-38.txt

Hope this helps.

i've had the same problem

i think there's something missing from the installation for a few of the games. luckily i was able to borrow a friend's copy aand will try installing that tonite. if the multiplayer works with his copy then i'm gonna yell at Firaxis until they send me a new game

are y'all trying to connect from home... or something like a college connection?

Scotty - That'd be cool if it works! Let me know!

BigCMan - I'm connected from home using a cable modem. I should point out, I have no problem with any other game online (WoW, Battlefront2), so there's a config problem related only to this game. I have also reformatted this machine once since I first installed the game. With a fresh XP SP2 install I still get this error. Still get the exact same problem.

edited to correct inaccuracies

i have solved my problem, by making sure that my mcAfee antivirus did not block IRC anymore,

hope this helps you too guys

OMG!!! THIS DID IT!!! THANK YOU! You are a genious!!!

If you are using McAfee, open up your VirusScan Console, open up "Access Protection" and then look for "Prevent IRC communication". Uncheck the box(s) next to that/those options and you're set!!!

I have the same problem, I just discovered it today, but I don't use mcaffee and I've tried everything including disableing my anti-virus and the windows firewall and still nothing.

Anyone else still having this probelm?

Tried calling tech support. At least the second guy was nice enough to admit that he had no idea what the problem was without blaming it on gamespy. They created a ticket so I'll see if they can really do anything. The guy said that they were really bussy. Hmmmmm.

I have the same problem, not using Mcafee... irritating, Guild Wars, HL2, Unreal Tournament all works, but not CIV4
