I am playing a regent game as the Japanese. I have played many civ games before, but I like playing on the easier levels. When I play on cheiftan, I win almost all of the time. On sid, I can only get about 3 or 4 cities before the computer comes after me. This is a good balance, I could win or lose.

I picked the Japanese because I play them on 50% of my games. Religious is good for cheap temples and one turn anarchy, and Militaristic is good for cheaper military improvemets.

I will post a save up later, so people will have a feel of what the game is like.

Here are the settings.

Civ1stock.jpg

Civ2stock.jpg

I am using a different graphics set, but everything else in the game is left alone.

Starting off...

Civ3stock.jpg

I start off with a good starting location at the south end of the map. I built my city where the game started me, I wanted to be by the fur. I start a warrior and make the worker build a road on the fur.

Next turn comes around and the game asks me what to research.

Civ4-2stock.jpg

I want to get alphabet soon so I can get to some of the good ancient age techs. I drop the science rate to 20%, it was going to take that long anyway.

Civ5stock.jpg

I built a warrior in Kyoto and sent it out to explore. Found more furs, good for trading people with later.

2 turns later I find someone blocking me to the north.

Civ6stock.jpg

Well, whoever it is, they won't survive for long.

To be continued...

Moving on, I have met the Scandinavians, and I traded some techs with them.

Civ7stock.jpg

That warrior can sit there to block any settlers from coming south. Hopefully they have very little land up north. I think I can put 4 cities on my landmass. If they do not have much land, wiping them out won't take much.

We now can build archers, so some are built and sent to where the warrior is sitting.

Other than that, I'm going to be stuck for a little while.

Civ8stock.jpg

Now, I got a settler. I am going to move it north to block the Scandinavians and to secure more furs.

I am going to have the worker move and build a road to the new city.

Civ9stock.jpg

Osaka is now built, and I need at least one warrior to defend the city from attack.

I am getting plenty of money now, that is needed to buy new technologies and mabye run a decifit for a period of time, if needed.

Civ10stock.jpg

You may wander why I am building a road in the tundra, I will build a city there eventually.

In 3 turns another settler will come out, and that is where I plan to put it.

Anyway, I hope the Scandinavians don't get too strong!

Tokyo has been built. At first it will be more of a liability, but it will make money later.

Civ11stock.jpg

I still have one more city to build, some archers to move, and I'll start the war.

Here is my score page.

Civ12stock.jpg

I can tell that I am much larger than the Scandinavians. So I hope they have ran out of room.

Civ13stock.jpg

Alphabet has been discovered, and Kyoto is now solely focusing attention on archers. I will build a new settler in a few turns.

Civ14stock.jpg

Edo has been built, so those are my four cities. More archers are gathering by Scandinavia though.

Civ15stock.jpg

Got 3 veteran archers and still that one warrior that has been sitting there forever. Writing still has another 10 turns yet to go.

Meanwhile, I declare war on Scandinavia. I took their capital away easily. They still have one city left, but with 5 archers it won't be a problem.

Civ16stock.jpg

I still am wandering what is above me.

Civ17stock.jpg

They have some incense, that will become useful. More technologies are coming along at a quicker pace as well.

Civ18stock.jpg

I am getting enough archers to take the city.

Civ19stock.jpg

I took the city and got even more workers? I think I got about 6 workers from them alone.

Civ20stock.jpg

Well, the Vikings are gone now. I notice that we have another neighbor to the north. It is the Zulu, and they are not giving me a fair deal at all.

Civ21stock.jpg

Oh well, not that I would let them live on my home island anyway for very long. They also have an early special military unit.

Civ22stock.jpg

I managed to get Ulundi and another worker. Map making is almost done, so I can put some settlers on ships to expand. I see some dyes and I want to get them, but it is best to wait until the war is over.

Civ23stock.jpg

I have a boat ready to transport settlers, and I am working on Code of Laws. More archers are still being built.

Civ24stock.jpg

Have a stack of 9 archers, that should be enough to take the city, but I am careful. Also, if you can see well enough on the picture, you can see that I have found a new island and built a city there.

Civ25stock.jpg

I will make peace with the Zulus for a few turns if they give me one of their cities. As you see it is not working well.

Thanks for your support, and feel free to give suggestions.

I love your story. 2 updates in 2 days, that's great.

I hope you did make that deal with Shaka (it's not at all going bad IMHO), you can give them a little gold or, if you want, 1 valuable tech for a less valuable one. If it doesn't work (although it should) you can get all the units out of 1 of the cities, then give them the city, and recapture it next turn (they don't get an extra defense unit if you give them the city in deal). Then they'll accept to make peace. But if you do this, be sure that they don't recapture Bapedi from you.

Anyway, you probably made that deal already.

Here is a view from my new island. There is horses on it, that is good...

Civ26stock.jpg

This is just a power ranking.

Civ27stock.jpg

More cities on my new island, and the war with the Zulu has hit a temporary stalemate.

Civ28stock.jpg

I finally took over their capital, Zimbabwe. I get a city for a peace treaty, so that is acceptable.

Civ29stock.jpg

Peace isn't going to last for long, I move about 6 or 7 archers up to Bapedi.

Civ30stock.jpg

The Zulu should be gone in about two turns. I trade some technology, because they are already gone in my book.

Civ31stock.jpg

War is redeclared and Bapedi is taken.

Civ32stock.jpg

Well, the Zulu are gone now, but wait a minute, they still have a city!

Civ33stock.jpg

The pyramids are completed by the Mayans. We will sign a peace treaty with the Zulu soon.

Civ34stock.jpg

We get some techs for a peace treaty. That's great. Too bad they don't have anything else to offer us.

Civ35stock.jpg

Next time I will attempt to knock out the Zulu for good.

Here is my save game file if you are interested in seeing more of the game.

Another update with lots of screenies!!!
I think you're the best story poster in the world of non-NESers!!!!

I'd love to look at the save but I don't have Conquests. I already have an obsession for Conquests.

It's bad that in Conquests, map trading is at Navigation. You don't know the postition of the last Zulu city?

Nagoya is built to replace Bapedi. I don't want the Zulus recolonizing my island! Corruption is now starting to take a huge toll for our empire.

Civ36stock.jpg

The Zulus have nothing left to offer me.

Civ37stock.jpg

War is redeclared for about the fourth time.

Civ38stock.jpg

We take Isandhlwana, but we still didn't get any more money out of them!

Civ39stock.jpg

And the Zulu are now completly gone, finally.

Civ40stock.jpg

We're the most powerful nation in the world!

Civ41stock.jpg

Nagasaki is built.

Civ42stock.jpg

Corruption is taking a toll, I would be rich if I didn't have to deal with it.

Civ43stock.jpg

Another power ranking. You can tell I still have not found anyone else.

Civ44stock.jpg

We need more settlers to get more cities on those islands!

Civ45stock.jpg

Well, now we need to find someone else to destroy. Got plenty of land, so I will be expanding for awhile.

I can't continue the pace I am going at for much longer, but I think I can get a post a day.

On the race to get the Great Wonders, I am currently doing very poorly. I only have one city building a wonder, and it still has some time to go.

The Mayans get another wonder...

Civ47stock.jpg

Here is another view of my empire. Republic will get done soon.

Civ48stock.jpg

We are building more ships for expansion.

Civ49stock.jpg

More cities are built, we are becoming very decentralized, and the older cities can't afford to maintain the new ones.

Civ50stock.jpg

Civ51stock.jpg

Hopefully I can get the Great Lighthouse in 12 turns. It will make water navigation easier.

Civ52stock.jpg

All of this happened in less than 10 turns.

Civ53stock.jpg

Civ54stock.jpg

Civ55stock.jpg

Civ56stock.jpg

I may not get a single wonder on this game.

I was building the Great Lighthouse, but now it has been switched to that museum that give you happiness in one of your cities.

For now that is fine, but I am targeting Smith's Trading Company down the road, that would wipe out a lot of my costs.

If you want to reduce corruption a bit, move the palace to a more central location, or try to build the FP somewhere.

More wonders are coming along, but not for me anyway.

Civ57stock.jpg

Well, I can get at least one wonder.

I don't know why Kyoto is undefended, but no one can get to us for now, so I am not worrying about it.

Civ58stock.jpg

We get to republic, and I want my cities to grow more and to trade more, so I start the revolution!

Civ59stock.jpg

After that comes military reduction, I need to save money.

Civ60stock.jpg

More cities are on the way! They will provide a scientific boost.

Civ61stock.jpg

Corruption costs is now half the revenue that I bring in. Notice that I am only spending 1/6 of my revenue into science!

Some of my core cities need to develop to support the younger cities.

Civ62stock.jpg

New land is to the north of us.

Civ63stock.jpg

The island doesn't look too good, but I found another island.

Civ64stock.jpg

I now control 25% of the world's land.

Civ65stock.jpg

Currency is researched, and I am running in the red to get another technology in under 10 turns.

Civ66stock.jpg

Corruption can be curved, but it is a long process.

And yes, the Forbidden Palace is being built in Zimbabwe.

Well, that island is 100% mountains and tundra. It still is worth colonizing because it will have useful resources on it later.

Civ67stock.jpg

Got one new city on the island!

Civ68stock.jpg

We managed to find another island. It has some luxury resources, and the island above it we found has iron.

Civ69stock.jpg

Corruption is still high, but I am trying to slightly phase it out. Still, less than one sixth of my budget is going toward science.

Civ70stock.jpg

Hey, we found someone! Looks like they are expanding as well, but not at the pace I am.

Civ71stock.jpg

Their warriors are exploring the island.

Civ72stock.jpg

We talk with the Ottomans, and nothing gets done. They are farther along in technology than us, and I assume they have had contact with at least one more civ. They only have 8 cities, we have...too many to fit on to the screen!

Civ73stock.jpg

I do seem to be more powerful then the Ottomans.

Civ74stock.jpg

I have built an embassy with the Ottomans. They have six military units in their capital compared to zero in mine. They don't know where we are, so they can not attack our homeland.

Civ75stock.jpg

Comparing the Ottoman capital to the rest of my civilization and the world...

Civ76stock.jpg

I still need to find the other two civilizations...
