First my specs:

WinXP Pro (SP 2)

AMD Athlon™ XP processor 3000+ (2.167 GHz) with QuantiSpeed™ architecture

VIA KM 400A2 Chipset

512 MB DDR (PC2700) x 2

NVidia Geforce FX 5700LE 256Megs

Now the problem!

Was getting fatal error every couple of turns. Realized it was happening during autosave; which I disabled. Game plays great on high setting with huge map. Everything is good except I can't save! When I save or when it tried to autosave I get this Fatal Error message.

Memory allocation failure - exiting program

Reason: bad allocation, File:, \CvAppMainLoop.cpp Line: 261

I have checked hard drive and there are no bad sectors. Page file is set to manage by system. Hard drive is defragged.

Anyone know how I can resolve this?

I will be more than happy to post further info if needed.

Some say it's ram, but I have 4 GB of it on Vista Home Premium, and this still happens to me.

Do I need an expansion, or just a user-made patch to get this resolved?

Yes, I'd also like to know the answer to this question becuase I myself and experiencing the EXACT same error. I've also noticed that the saved file it has for my last saved game goes from about 809KB to 1,043KB every time.. Kind of wierd!! But as for the direct error message I get EXACTLY the same... I am using Windows XP 32 bit so of course only 3GB of my 4GB is showing. Like you, I've checked my hard drive, virtual mem allocation, etc.. Nothing.. PLEASE someone out there resolve this issuse!! I still have to kick St. Loius' BUTT!!! LOL
