I looked over topics covered in this forum and I didn't see this mentioned, sorry if it has already been brought up.
The great people system is one of my favorite aspects of Civ 4. I like playing philosophical leaders, using specialists, just to get the great people. They are cool.
But the game could do a lot to add to atmosphere involved in the great people. Most of these would be incredibly simple to implement. Some ideas:
- Bio's of all the great people, so if you don't know who the historical person was, you could read about them. This would both be in the Civlopedia and could be clicked on when the great person emerges.
- Academies are named after the scientist that founds them, so Athens has "Plato's Academy" rather than just "Academy." Perhaps, similarly, if a great engineer is used to build the Hanging Gardens, then if you put your mouse over the Hanging Gardens it would say (built by such and such engineer).
- Super-Specialists are named after their founder, so my super-specialist founded by Einstein are "Followers of Einstein" or "Einstein's Scientists" or some such.
- Great cultural works -- the ones that give you 4000 culture -- actually show you some work done by the artist in question. So if the artist was a poet, you actually show one of his poems; if he was an artist, show one of his paintings, if he was a composer, give us a short clip. In fact, you could do this no matter what the artist was used for. This would take a bit of work, but, I think, would add a lot of atmosphere.
-- At the end of the game, you are given a summary of which great people were born in your civilization and what they went on to do (along with a similar summary of your wonders of the world).
I'm sure there are more things you could do to add to the atmosphere here. The great people are very cool but feel a bit underdeveloped.
