Rather than run a G-Minor twice a month and a G-Major once a month, we're going to reserve those names for future use in HOF-IV. The Gauntlets in III I'll now label GIII. As long as we have sufficient interest, we'll continue to run them on a monthly basis.

So, here's your current Gauntlet:
  • Difficulty: C3C Deity
  • Mapsize: Tiny
  • Victory: Culture 100k
  • Due: January 4th

I've never tried a Tiny map at high difficulty, so am not sure how to begin.

Babylon seems obvious, but on Tiny Deity it's not obvious to me which are the best opponents. Choose opponents with overlapping starting techs in order to slow the scientific pace, or chooose opponents with non-overlapping starting techs in order to be able to trade early?

Goody huts aren't too useful on Deity, so omit barbarians.

Early strategy--no Pottery, so no immediate granary. With a good starting position, perhaps worker, warrior, settler, ... Early temple is good for 100K. Will need an early granary.

Start by researching Alphabet at 50-turn rate to try for Republic slingshot, or quickly research other techs hoping for an SGL? Republic or Monarchy soon, then to Feudalism after a large number of cities makes corruption too high.

Depends. I suspect you'll want ToA, and so won't research education all game. I don't see tech pace as a big issue for this game.

That definitely, unless you decide to play as russia or arabia. Both of those are expansionist, and have cheap culture buildings. They also have useful UUs, available without education.

Early temple isn't that useful. Early expansion is very important. At the end of the game you'll hopefully be close to 1000 cpt. Certainly above 500cpt. So even wih doubling, delaying the temple in your capital 100 turns is still only going to make 1 turn difference to your finish date at most. Delaying early growth to build a temple will delay your finish much more.

If you do Alphabet at 50-turn rate, you will not get the slingshot. Even on deity, tiny map makes max-research feasible from the start, and an SGL for Pyramids or ToA or both would be a huge help.

With only one civIII gauntlet per month, I thought that the deadline for entries might be the end of the month. Did you really mean the 19th, 'slug?

Sorry, Slug. I tried three times, I did not totally abandon one attempt yet, but I'm not going to get it done by the deadline. I never beat Diety before, but I haven't given up yet, just can't finish it in time.

Having asked for the Gauntlet to continue, I feel a bit guilty that I haven't completed a game for the HoF this session.:( I'm afraid that the Christmas break and a holiday got in the way and now I'm back at work and I'm not sure how much civ time I'll have in the near future. (Maybe this is the end of Gauntlets in civ III?) If I get something done I'll post it here-even if it is after the deadline.

This Gauntlet is now closed. No submissions.

extremely disappointment.

I have engage a GIII-December try.
but In the middle game I think It's too far to challenge the No 1,
So I changed the victory.

what if I insist the game, even I win at 2049AD?:crazyeye:

maybe that's a only way I fish a Gauntlet.
or
maybe I hacker others like Tone which ban their network:lol:

Sorry, I don't understand. What am I (not?) doing?

just kiding,just kiding,
I mean if one want to harvest a Gauntlet, either he or she can submit a good game
or
"hacker others like Tone which ban their network"
that cause they can't submit :shy:

Don't forget archphoenix you can still submit a game started for the gauntlet to the HoF, it will just be a HoF game, though and not a "gauntlet" game. I've got a half started tiny game that I couldn't finish but I don't think I've completely abondoned yet.

I took Persia, beat on the Vikings terribly, conquered my whole continent, but I'm so far behind Byz in tech and culture the only hope is to crush them militarily. But I've got Immortals and trebuchets shipped on galley against her muskets and frigates, and I expect her to get riflemen soon enough. Not sure.

yes, yes. of course a HOF game.
but When I play for 100K victory, I often change my purpose midway.
maybe my patience not too high to finish a 100K or Histo.
or maybe just I can't resist the reload pulse after a long long game, that is, I can endure many huge mistake among a short or medium game, but In a longlong game, when a huge mistake occur, either reload or abandon or just continue with the mistake can't be chose happily.

It's 10 days late, but I finally submitted a Tiny Deity 100K game, my first Deity submisssion

After spending quite a bit of time in experimentation, I decided on the same as Chamnix's Demigod submission: Babylon against England, Portugal, and Byzantines. 60% pangaea, warm arid old, no barbs.

Generated about 4000 games in Mapfinder, looking for cow + 3 grass + 2 river. Got about 64 maps. Started about 2/3 of these, abandoning most of them early.

Finally stuck with one, ending at 1470 AD--not as good as Chamnix (1070) or Moonsinger's Sid game (1060) but better than the previous 1762. Slowed by (besides lack of skill) Byzantines being far away.

One SGL for ToA (Pyramids taken), but captured many wonders (England, close, had Pyramids) and all 8 luxuries. Managed to monopolize iron and saltpeter. Byzantines were too advanced to subdue them with knights, had to go to cavalry. Reduced their power enough so they got just under 30K culture to my 60K at the end, but it was close. Won just as I got Steam Power.
