What about a system where when you fought other civilizations in a game you earned culture? You would earn an amount of culture proportional to the cost of each enemy unit that you killed. The culture earned would then be given to the units home city. This would add additional stratagy to the game, as you would want to plan where to build units to give the culture where you wanted it. To prevent too much culture from being generated you could have it so that as you built up more and more culture the more hammers spent in a unit would have to be killed. This idea makes sense historicly, as seen in people like the Aztecs, whose whole culture was based on fighting.

Good idea, but maybe not culture earnings. I was thinking more like fame from killing enemy units and when your unit has enough kills (10 maybe), the town where those "butchers" where created could gain free military academy or something that gives units trained in that city for example 1 free promotion.

That also might work, but what do you see that would be wrong with culture being gained through fighting? Although it isn't exactly how you would naturally think of culture, it was how it was gained historicly in medieval Europe (ie jousts) and was a primary means with the Aztecs.

I got an idea last night before going to sleep and remembered this thread. You could have culture through military garrisoned in a city if you have built barracks there, like military power that would be added to normal culture spreading.
That would make neighbors clear message that let's move borders a little or we come and take all.

Why would you ever do anything except warmonger if this were implemented? Warmongering is one of the strongest strategies already, this would make it much stronger.

Ok, maybe that could be countered with some penalties for aggressive trait leaders having negative effect for normal culture production or something...

wow... heriditary rule + that = uber culture monsters....

Perhaps every 3rd military unit garrisoned in a city could add +1 to culture.

Maybe if a unit built in a certain city attains a high rank or X kills it would become a hero to the city it had been trained in and generate culture. It could also be made so that if this unit with hero status came back and visited thier home town the city would gain bonus happiness or culture. Or even a small production bonus.

Plenty of soldiers were killed by the Viet Cong but no one is attracted to their culture because of it. The troops on both sides in Iraq didn't attract anybody to anybodie's culture. Maybe UUs could add culture, but im not so sure on that either. It would only make military build up a more important part of the game.

How about this... a uber-successful unit could grant it's city a local (cultural?) golden age... or perhaps a ("skeleton"-)building, with various bonuses, that would be obsolete at the end of the middle ages. Like a heros epic, or something.
