UUs are no doubt very powerful in their time, but in multiplayer it isn't always feasible to make it to that time. Therefore, I would propose that each nation have a larger array of UUs than just one, perhaps one for every age. In this way, every race could be at least somewhat usable during all ages (for multiplayer more than anything, which requires some semblance of balance which is certainly lacking for a nation like germany or america in particular, who each have very late game UUs).

I originally thought each civ was supposed to have 2 UU's in Civ 4, not really sure what happened to the idea though. It would have been great.

That is what I did for my Mali civ. I made them UU for just about every regular unit in the game. Now they are a truly unique civ:cool:

I think each nation should have a UU for each era and unit category with own graphics..etc. Each nations' UU will not have any better/stonger traits then the other nations' UU for that particulaR era/category. Just a graphic to add more personality. However, a special UU or two with unique traits need to be added thru each nations history.

cheers

The idea is great. A UU for every age (like in Empire Earth II that failed horribly) rather than just 1 really early or really late...

I always wonder who uses late UU's on multiplayer. Would they even get that far?

I think there should be UU for early, mid and late game. For Incas the quewhatever will become useless after discovering archery, so it would be nice to have some UU's to use for later game too.
And before all Inca fans start complaining the usefulness of their UU, this is only my opinion of their UU. =)

Rise of Nations had unique units for many ages (not all) for all Nations in it. Even the aztecs had (not historically accurate, obviously) unique units in the modern age and etc. That would be nice to see in Civ IV.

Although I myself would like to see a unique unit for every age for each Civ.

I like it the way it is.

As for now, Each CIV is different from the other in both traits and UU. this combination is not easy to balance but it turns every pich of a leader to a different game with a different strategy.

Adding more UU to each CIV might ease the balance by making the CIVs almost equal to one another, but will also make the game more boring for exactly the same reason.

Well, each UU in each age would be different.

Let's say the X civ's classical age UU is infantry, and the X civ's medievel age UU is mounted. Etc etc

Meanwhile, the Y civ's classical age UU is infantry, but the Y civ's medievel age UU is..er..a boat?

you will be limited to only a few types. after all, each age doesn't have more then 10 unit types (usually closer to 5).
So as a result you will get 4 CIVs with special axeman, 6 with maceman, 3 with infantry...
