Way out there...
Maybe we should start a monthly unit making competition, each month with a different theme. The winner may carry the prestigious title of “unit maker of the month” in his signature.

I propose the following rules:

1. Everyone may enter a unit, as long as:
  • The submitter is the creator of the unit
  • The unit is completely new, not posted before either on this website, nor on any other. The units’ 3D model does not have to be new, though.
  • The unit is not directly converted from another game.
  • The new unit must be available for download.
2. There will be a separate competition for the cut ‘n pasters, who will battle for the title of “CnP-er of the month”.

3. The theme of the monthly competition is set on forehand in 12 categories. The order of these categories is decided by popular vote in the poll above.
  • Classic human units
  • Classic terrestrial vehicles
  • Classic ships
  • Modern human units
  • Modern terrestrial vehicles
  • Modern ships
  • Airplanes
  • Fantasy humanoid units
  • Fantasy other units
  • Science fiction humanoid units
  • Science fiction vehicles
  • Science fiction (space) ships
4. The unit maker can choose any unit he wants, as long as it remains within the given category (in case of doubt: consider it included :)). For inspiration and ideas the first page of the call thread of that month may contain some request by other members.

5. The deadline is exactly 4 weeks after the launch of the call thread. After that a jury thread will be launched in which the winner will be decided by a 1 week poll.

If anyone is interested I'll start the first thread next January.

I’m glad to see that the last week or so there has been more activity on these forums than in the last few months. Maybe this way some of the old unit makers might be motivated again to pick up some new projects… :D

Sounds like MacDonald's "employee of the month"...
Altough I understand the possible benefits of this kind of "competition", I think that it could take away a bit of the fun of unit-making. As the unit making (so far atleast) has not been a competition.

Cheers.

well by those rules I'm out of the competition.

Yup... :D

The rules as I set them there are just a proposal. If anyone has suggestions I'll be happy to change them...
I think CnP's can be included in a second, parallel competition.

@Wyrmshadow: what rule bothers you?

I guess that would be a rule of your choise - not posting them units at CFC.

Well I guess we could change that to "the unit should be publicly available".

I don't think I could do it every month. But, I might find some time on occasion, depending on how many others were participating.

Good idea, but I don't think there'd be enough unit makers. I for one have no clue how :p

if i speed up the baldurs gate units, and Test of Time units, i could enter in the c&p-er of the month! yay! i could win something! (<<<ya right )

  • The new unit is submitted for download on this website.
Wyrmshadow got into a significant arguement with the moderators of CFC. The results of which were that all his units on here were deleted and he now only posts them on EVO-games.net. All he posts here are previews and links to the thread over on EVO.
Technically none of my units are posted on here either. With GiDustin's permission I post them only on civ3files.com and give direct links to the download from here. The result is that CFC and EVO users can seamlessly DL my files and not even know about GIDustin's generousity. I do this because it allows me to see quick and easy what the lifetime DL's of a thing is without doing math (adding the DL's from various sites).

I'll change that to "the unit should be publicly available".

Well in any case I'll just win by default for sheer volume. Im not acting arrogant, its just the truth.

Well your units are certainly good enough to win every time, but I''m not sure your volume would help you win. If you enter 20 units in every category every month (and we all know you can)... there would be much rejoicing... dancing in streets perhaps, but that many units might just dilute your vote. ie: you might enter 20 tanks (for example), and you might finish 2nd-3rd-4th-5th-6th-7th-etc and not finish first because those who prefer your tanks would have so many to chose from.
also some unit types are challenging to make with Bryce (eg: the human/humanoid ones, ships with sails, etc)
Yes, I know you're good enough to overcome those challenges and likely still win most of the time. But who loses? Certainly not the civ community.
My only concern is if there would be enough competition. It is very good news that Utahjazz would be willing to join in. So I guess the only way to see if there are enough is try it.

I discovered this problem years ago on this forum. Whenever someone decides to make a contest or a poll as to who is best.. there is much fighting and gnashing of teeth and everyone goes home angry. Or not enough poeple participate in this activity and it dies a crib death. So looking back at past experiences, this idea is doomed.
