EDIT: Problem solved. See below.

Civ 4 worked flawlessly on my machine before: 1.09 patch; ATI card with Catalyst 5.10.

I wished to install patch 1.52, but I had some custom assets I thought I'd get rid of, including Harkonnen's memory fix.

I deleted the files and restarted the computer. I loaded 1.52 and restarted the computer. "Failed to load python module CvEventInterface". I thought, "Uh, oh. I erased something I was not supposed to." So, I unistalled Civ.

System restart.

Installed Civ and patch 1.52. Same error!

I remembered someone said a new Catalyst driver was out, so I downloaded it. Installed. Same error. I thought, "Hey, I'll uninstall Civ 4 and all ATI drivers and go back to the system configuration that was working before."

So, I uninstalled drivers and Civ and re-installed ATI Catalyst 5.10 and Civ 4 to 1.09. Same error!

What is going on here? The game worked great on my system before!

And, YES, I held down the [Shift] key during game load!!!!

Btw, I did a search for the file, and it exists in the main Civ directory (in the appropriate sub-directory for the main game) and in several of the scenarios.

Did you dl the patch using the ingame "check for updates" options or from an outside site? Some patches floating around these sites (including this one) are screwed up. Try uninstalling and doing a search to remove any leftover files, then reinstall and patch ingame.

That might be worth a try. How do I know what "leftover files" to search for? Could there be something leftover in the registry? How do I know what names to put in the search?

Any file or folder called Civilization 4, it can screw up your new install if any are left.
