So I just updated my game and now it's just crawling. I used to be able to play a game with 12 AI on a huge map and only get a slowdown near the end.

Now when I play, after about 2 turns I start to have lag that is worse then lag I had with 12 AI (and in these games I was only using 6 AI). It has become completely unplayable, has anyone else had any problems like this, or better yet, anyone know how to fix it?

Please post your Dxdiag

(Dxdiag - Start Button - click - choose run - type dxdiag - hit enter - wait a min - select save all information - post using 'advanced' button below)

Regards

Int,

When updating the patch resets all in game options to default.

So if you lowered any settings to play the game it would have put them back to the higher settings possibly causing the slow down.

You will have to readjust the setting you had before it that is the case.

Good luck.

Here it is. And I didn't lower anything prior to the patch, in fact I increased some settings. Also there was bo change to my system between the patch, I was playing, quit and thought to check for a patch, installed the patch and tried to play again.

The patch was designed for lower end amounts of ram.
It took out of site units and animation and stuck them into the page file.

You could try changeing those setting regarding that back to where it uses you physical ram as opposed to slower page file.

set dynamic unit paging to 0

and dynamicanimpaging to 0

That worked, your a genius, thanks.

hello i've read this page, and I'm not sure if I have the same problem...

but my game runs smoothley untill the time that i've discovered most of the map, usually during industrial-modern times

does this solution also work for me, or should i try something else?

it would depend on your system specs and dxdiag file.

post them please.

In short, that only lets you use your ram again as opposed to putting it in the pagefile. The pagefile is slower but it is there IE. If you have lots of ram and video ram, the yes use the above suggestion.

No that would not work for you if you have 512.

Those changes oulined above would use the faster physical ram, which, if you have a lot of, should give you a performances boost.

With 512mb it would likely cause more problems.

Where do you go to make these setting changes?

Also, is 1 Gb RAM adequate for this suggestion to be effective?

Yes, removing the 2 paging options out of the init file
caused my machine (Dell XPS laptop, 1 Gb memory,
3.4 P4, 256 Mb ATI mobility 9800) to go from horribly
sluggish, when playing a huge map, to just sluggish.
Does anyone have further optimizing suggestions?
Is there a FAQ somewhere?

*bump*

Can anyone tell us where we are to make these changes?

Thanks in advance.

In the Civilization config file.

Go to your installation directory (default is c:\program files\firaxis games\Sid Meier’s Civilization 4\)

Double click the file _Civ4Config
