This is the reply I got from Firaxis when I sent them an E-mail asking for the... dun, dun, dunnnn....source code! As you can see, Tuesday, January 3, 2006 is today! So I hope I`ll have something for ya people, when I get back from work...

Great!
You changed your location? ;) If they release it, we should make a civ called The Source Code and you should be the leader!

Steph, I'm not so good at French, but you said something like : "the hope makes you live", didn't you?

Yes... Something we say in France when something is unlikely but you keep hoping for that.

Odds are slim that we would get the source code so soon after civ IV being released. Civ 3 is still on the market and it's only been 4 years since it came out, so I don't see them releasing the source code for now or any time the near future.

The only chance I see would be if the accept to "delegate" to others, who would expand the game for them, and Firaxis could sell the mods/ expansion for a relatively cheap fee.
Like Mr D is entitled with the right to make Expansion 3 of Civilization III. We'll sell the expansion 20$, and Mr D will get a cookie for his hard work.

I don't see why they wouldn't do what Activision did with CtP2, releasing the source code to game owners and requiring the artwork and other material for the compiled game to run. Sure it increases the risk of piracy, but it also gives a better incentive to buy the game or the XPs in the first place. How much money are they making off of Civ3 these days anyway? Most stores don't even sell it anymore.

My vow to turn my back on Civ4 if I get the code still stands.

They were also no longer supporting, selling or making CTP2. Also, there was no CTP3 from which an updated CTP2 might steal sales.

Also, I suspect that most stores are still selling both. I know in Seattle this is the case.

But of course the bottom line is this: releasing Civ3 source code will not happen any time soon, if ever; and most certainly not in 2006. This is an on going series. There is no way they would allow an updated version of their code to compete with their current product. Why would any one want to cannibalize their sales in this manner?

The only hopes for a "new" civ3 for the diehard Civ3 fans are:
1: Steph finishs his Civ3 compatible SSS game and eventually adds AI for it.
2: Someone tweaks the stink out of the CTP2 source code.
3: Firaxis pulls its head out of its seat and makes either a civ3.5 (very unlikely) or fixes everything in Civ4 that is bugging us (somewhat unlikely).

4: play civ3 and enjoy it while it all works itself out.

Well, Bjornlo's words are true, but you also have to think o the way he wrote it.
The game could be 20 years old but if some bastard writes in and cusses them out, demanding for the source code it won't happen.
On the other hand, a charming speaker can get almost anything. Can you say Civ 4 source Code?

Ok, that was a little to far. But their the third option: Hacking.

No. Companies normally don't do things unless they make money. Releaseing the source code right now would hurt any more profits they could still milk out of civ 3.

@MC: did you see BadKharma's post? counterstrike profited by using the source code as an insentive to buy it. moddability sells... (obviously..)

Yes I saw. If a company is going to release the code the they normally annouce it with the game. I don't think whoever holds the source code (It might be Take2) will want to release it. As theres no evidence people will buy the game simply because the source code is release.

That's why I propose they market a 3.5 version or expansion, (15$??) but trust others to do the job for them
