We all have complaint about CIV4's diplomacy: how the AI demands you to cancel deal and so on, and if you decline they'll hate you. In many cases this negative effect on AI attitude is irriversable. It's frustrating.

So I come across the Great Diplomat idea. It could do one of the following things:

1. Improve a particular AI's attitude toward you by +5
2. Make peace between two AIs
3. Make one AI open up all the redlined options for 10 turns
4. Convince one AI to convert civics or religion.

I still don't know how to generate this leader - it doesn't sound right to come from a wonder, but I have no other better idea. One possibility is your "diplomatic activity". E.g., each trade you make accumulate certain points. But it's very hard to balance. Another possibility is to pop it up randomly when you make a trade like the civ3 way.

EDIT:

Similarly, how about a "Diplomatic" trait? All other AIs automatically have +2 attitude toward you, and more willing to trade with you.

Good ideas. I'm going to look into this :D

I really like the great diplomat idea. There have been so many great diplomats throughout history, why not add this in? It could come with an expansion that had new wonders or something, then that way the new wonders could be the ones that generate "more likely to get a great diplomat" or something.

I like the Diplomatic trait idea, but each trait gives two bonuses, one of which includes a building. The Great Diplomat is also good, but it isn't at all like the other Great People that have buildings that help produce them or specialists like them. Instead of having Great Diplomats, why not just Diplomats? They could establish Embassies in forgien nations (Capitals only, but maybe some minor offcies in other cities) that would improve relations or hold conferences among nations. Then the Diplomatic trait could double the speed of building Embassies in forgien cities.

It seems to me the largest problem with this is "How does it work in multiplayer."

It should be noted that I'm really fond of this, and I've thought on it on occasion. I think Heero's embassy idea is probably best. Maybe it can increase the profit from traderoutes, and bypass "refuses to talk" nonsense.

Embassys could also allow civilizations to be more willing to trade resources or go to war, instead of how it is set up now where even good relations might not get you everything. I think the problem in multiplayer would be that players don't always have to stick with what other players are trying to get them to do. I think for dipolmacy to be expanded there would have to be more consequences for not trading or helping friendly players like more unhappiness in cities or even a greater chance of revolt.

Love this idea... nothing more frustrating that having a -2 or -3 ("you refused to give us tribute!") modifier just because I wouldn't give away a tech whenever the damn AI was falling too far behind.

hey Apdavis828. please pity the 1 who lack behind the tech war...give them some free tech, they are so far behind and wont make a threat to u anyways, and they will love the freebies and willing to help u after (hopefully)

How is the AI going to use this however? They can't use any of those options with you when they get their great diplomats.

Meh. Who would Great Diplomats be? What I could suggest is...

Constantine (This would be odd, since he was also a Roman Emperor. Hell, he's good enough for an expansion pack!)

Bio: He rounded up important Religious figures in Rome in an attempt to improve political stabillity. The result was the Nicene Creed, the very paper that caused Roman Catholicism to be formed, and, dramatically improve the relations between sects of Christianity.

and..that's..it.. O.o

why couldn't you create a diplomat unit like a missionary. Then you could move the diplomat to a foreign nation (as long as you had open borders). Once in an enemy city you could add it as a "great specialist" to the foreign city (you could use the civilization as the diplomat's "religion"). Then in you home embasy city (like scotland yard), you would generate points towards a great diplomat depending on how many diplomats you had established in how many civs with the different civs attitudes.

There are few AIs that I want to bless with a super-specialist though, especially if I plan to go to war with them at some point.
