Updated on Feb 7 2006:
Changes to Map:
- Fixed section of Africa that had Flood Plains in the Ocean (removed them)
- Civs starting with Hunting now start with Scout instead of Warrior (not sure if I should start them with both)
- Made changes to Gr.Britian (Copper, Stone, removed Aluminum for Coal)
- Added Oil to North Sea
- Removed 1 Oil from N. America (Gulf of Mexico)
- Added horses near Persia, added 2nd cow near Persia to help Capital City (since everything near it is plains)
- Added another wheat near Mongolia, to help with Capital City
- Removed 1 wheat from central North America, as a properly placed city there was getting "too" big.
- Moved horses near Spain, so Madrid doesn't start directly on top of the horses, also added 1 grassland to help Spanish starting loc.
Added 2nd map:
- 2nd map has Barbarian cities in "traditional" starting locations of former civs:
- Each is a city of size 1 with a single barbarian warrior
- Salamanca (Iroquois)
- Little Bighorn (Native Americans)
- Citchzen Itza (Maya)
- Lisbon (Portugal), note this forced the Spanish 1 tile NE
- Babylon (Babylonians)
- Entremont (Celts)
- Trondheim (Vikings)
- Zimbabwe (Zulu)
- Carthage (Cathaginians)
- Byzantines, Hittites, Ottomans, Netherlands all left out due to their proximity to other Civs
Original Post:
I really wanted a smaller world map to mess around with, while at the same time not worrying too much about the fact that Europe will be packed in.
I took the nice 64x40 Radical Earth and wiped everything out, turning it into a "clean slate" of ocean. I then drew each continent by hand, basically using a world map I had here, and trying to remember as best I can from other world maps I've played in Civ. I stretched Europe slightly (and as a result of doing that, Northern Africa), but it still boils down to 1 to 2 cities maximum for the European cities before having to forcefully take another.
I'll admit to the following about this:
- Most of my resource placement was based on what I recalled from other world maps...and just trying to get various resources placed near civs that had UUs for that resouce (iron by the Romans, for example...Copper by the Greeks, etc.) There's high chance I placed something no where near it's actually found...I'd say N.America is my most real-to-life.
- I tried to make each starting location a bit "better", like adding corn near the Inca starting location to help that city grow a bit more.
- I made rivers a bit more plentiful than I've seen on a lot of world maps.
- I have yet to complete a game on this map (as of Jan 17), just because I have not had the time.
I would like thoughts on this - I know it's smaller, but that's the point. Suggestions for resource placement are welcome. And forests, too, I suppose - although I tried to get a few near capitol cities for the "chop rush".
The following screen shots are of my game, on Noble, around 1800bc:
