Updated on Feb 7 2006:
Changes to Map:
- Fixed section of Africa that had Flood Plains in the Ocean (removed them)
- Civs starting with Hunting now start with Scout instead of Warrior (not sure if I should start them with both)
- Made changes to Gr.Britian (Copper, Stone, removed Aluminum for Coal)
- Added Oil to North Sea
- Removed 1 Oil from N. America (Gulf of Mexico)
- Added horses near Persia, added 2nd cow near Persia to help Capital City (since everything near it is plains)
- Added another wheat near Mongolia, to help with Capital City
- Removed 1 wheat from central North America, as a properly placed city there was getting "too" big.
- Moved horses near Spain, so Madrid doesn't start directly on top of the horses, also added 1 grassland to help Spanish starting loc.

Added 2nd map:
- 2nd map has Barbarian cities in "traditional" starting locations of former civs:
- Each is a city of size 1 with a single barbarian warrior
- Salamanca (Iroquois)
- Little Bighorn (Native Americans)
- Citchzen Itza (Maya)
- Lisbon (Portugal), note this forced the Spanish 1 tile NE
- Babylon (Babylonians)
- Entremont (Celts)
- Trondheim (Vikings)
- Zimbabwe (Zulu)
- Carthage (Cathaginians)
- Byzantines, Hittites, Ottomans, Netherlands all left out due to their proximity to other Civs

Original Post:
I really wanted a smaller world map to mess around with, while at the same time not worrying too much about the fact that Europe will be packed in.

I took the nice 64x40 Radical Earth and wiped everything out, turning it into a "clean slate" of ocean. I then drew each continent by hand, basically using a world map I had here, and trying to remember as best I can from other world maps I've played in Civ. I stretched Europe slightly (and as a result of doing that, Northern Africa), but it still boils down to 1 to 2 cities maximum for the European cities before having to forcefully take another.

I'll admit to the following about this:
- Most of my resource placement was based on what I recalled from other world maps...and just trying to get various resources placed near civs that had UUs for that resouce (iron by the Romans, for example...Copper by the Greeks, etc.) There's high chance I placed something no where near it's actually found...I'd say N.America is my most real-to-life.
- I tried to make each starting location a bit "better", like adding corn near the Inca starting location to help that city grow a bit more.
- I made rivers a bit more plentiful than I've seen on a lot of world maps.
- I have yet to complete a game on this map (as of Jan 17), just because I have not had the time.

I would like thoughts on this - I know it's smaller, but that's the point. Suggestions for resource placement are welcome. And forests, too, I suppose - although I tried to get a few near capitol cities for the "chop rush".

The following screen shots are of my game, on Noble, around 1800bc:

I like it, but Italy looks weird. And why you put 3 oil in N. America, but none in the North Sea?

Like I said, I wasn't perfect (or anywhere close) on most of the resource placement. Italy is slightly oversized to give Rome a bit more to work with.

the only suggestions I can think of (haven't played it yet) is that I wish the Americas were more squished (like in RadEarth) for 2 reasons:

american civs are always overpowered on earth maps, with all that territory; and we need oceans that can't be crossed till optics!!!

Other than that it looks cool :)

I thought I had the oceans setup. I'll double-check, but I'm 95% sure I didn't have any coastline anywhere that would allow for crossing until Optics.

And I am looking for something that'll allow me to "randomize" the players playing (I havne't had success finding one yet, so I'm going to just write one)...but yeah, the lack of other civs from the Americas always gives USA an advantage. I don't want to shrink it too much, though...

Ok maybe I didn't look hard enough to notice that. I just saw the 1 tile gap and thought it'd be easy to cross it. Now that I think though, cities on the west coast of africa and the east coast of south america, once their culture grows, they will see the others and have contact. Needs playtesting I guess :)

Nice small map of earth.
You even manage to get Europe to an acceptable size without making it quite as "radical" as the radical map.

I made the middle east a bit bigger before I played and changes some resources around to further boost Europe and have been playing a fun game as the Arabs (I have taken out most of Egypt and then most of the Greeks).
It has been a fun game so far and indeed needed for my laptop.

I think you need to pull 2 civs from Europe and put them in the America's. Maybe have France up in Canada or maybe use the Canada civ mod. I think also you need maybe a west coast (USA) civ. I know you want to be accurate but I think America has way too much room for expansion. Maybe put in a few extra Barbs to slow growth?

It's a nice map for those of us with computers that can't handle the huge maps. I'm playing as the English, tricky start but I've managed to get myself in a decent position for a possible diplomatic win. Only thing is I can't build the United Nations, apparently because there has to be at least three 'teams' first. Is this because of the large number of Civs left? (Only two people eliminated thus far).

As for resources, I can make some suggestions for where they were historically found and used in Britain.

http://www.data-wales.co.uk/orme.htm

So copper in North Wales (2 spaces west, 1 north of the English start I would suppose), presumerably to replace the one in Scotland.

The stone used to build Stonehenge also came from Wales, conveniently from South Wales. So you could move the stone to just south of the copper.

And I think you should consider making at least one of those two squares hills. Wales is a pretty hilly place. And you could place a short (1 tile long) river to give an impression of the Bristol Channel separating Wales and Devon/Cornwall. It might make it look a little more life-like without using any extra space.

And I really think the Aluminium in Scotland should be swapped for Coal. The British Isles used to be full of coal, it's just nearly all been mined out now. And leaving the pioneers of steam engines and railways without coal is strange.

As for forests, the centre of England could do with some, if there's space. The tile just northwest of the English start looks about right for Sherwood Forest.

Sorry if you think I'm nitpicking with some of these, but you did ask for suggestions :). And I hope other people can help you out with the rest of the world...

P.S. I agree with stalin, North Sea oil would be good as well.

The changes by Pazarius and Stalin are made - basically the changes to the UK, adding the oil to the North Sea, and I removed 1 of the oils in the Americas. I also tried to "sweeten" the Spanish and Mongol starting spots a bit, I noticed they'd start out slower than most.

The first post should have the updated file, assuming I did it right.

The game calls this map Huge in the select a scenario screen.
But this is a small sized map right?

thanks for this great map jerseymike.. i edited it quite a bit but the essence of your map is clear. u need xx century 2 mod for this remodel of nonradearth..

i think this map was better for the idea since the radical map would have left no space for european empires.. ok thanks again buddy

Awesome map with a good size, but I can't see any of the forests, fish or any other resources? If I move my mouse over a square, it will tell me there is a forest, but i can't see them on my screen.

Maybe this is because I'm using the 1.61 patch? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
Allan

Edit - Ah nevermind, I managed to slove my problem. A corrupt mod was causing the problem.
