Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster here. :D I am recently making a senario. It looks like I might have around 39-42 resources in my senario so I have some questions on the Resource Overflow Bug.

1) Some other threads suggest there are ways around the bug, but they don't go into depth as to how to get around it. Can someone kindly share the details?

2) Some of my resources can probably share an icon. For example "Sage of the East" can probably the same graphic and icon as "Sage of the West" (not the exact name of my resources, but you get the idea) So, if I have 42 resources but have only 32 graphics/icon for resources, will i still encounter the overflow bug?

3) I think i read somewhere that any luxury resources beyond the 8th will have no effect on happiness and will not appear on the city screen. What else do i need to know if I have more than 8 Luxury resources?

Thanks all :)

I don't know exactly what you mean by "resource overflow bug." Could you post a link to that thread?
Resources can share icons, and AFAIK there are no problems with that.
The problem with having more than 8 luxuries is that it can cause graphical problems such as resources in the wrong places. Also it's usually too easy to keep your people happy, unless you place them carefully on the map.

Thanks for the reply, Weasel OP! :)

This is where I read about it:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69769

The problem is discribed by embryodead:

Yes, I guess I have to ;) This bug appears only in some cases, but after some time it's unavoidable. It happens only if you have more than 32 resources in game, and a city (or group of cities) not connected to a capital, is connected to a resource(s). Then, that city/cities will get a magical resource out of nowhere (resource nr x+32, where x is the existing resource nr). This resource will appear in all city/trade boxes.. if it's a luxury it will provide happy faces etc.

Just do it:
Build a lone city (not a capital of course) on a Horse resource. You should get a "bonus" Jade. Build a city on Iron.. you should get a Tar too. These magical resources are cumulative, and appear even if you don't know the tech to see them.

I tested it in C3C and they didn't fix it :( (it was reported long time ago).

Solution to this problem is to place bonus resources in places 1-11 and 33-43, while strategic and luxuries in places 12-32. It's a bit complicated but it works and doesn't affect the game in any way. Oh and if you have more than 43 resources, then there is really no solution, I think ;)

EDIT: if you wonder how often does it happen... well just think how often you sent a settler from your capital to claim a horse or iron.
ps. and I hope I you didn't get me wrong in the first post, I really *do* hope that this bug gets fixed, but so far it had little attention since not many people play with more than 32 resources.

P.S. I am using Conquest to make my senario BTW. I try combing through the forum for other modding info... It's sometimes confusing because some techniques/problems are specific to vannilla Civ3 or PTW.

Thanks for replying :)

Yes Comfromist, I have thought about that.... But, I have around 10 Bonus resources in my senario.... so with his method, I can increase the number of resources to 37 without encountering the bug (I think).....

Put Bonus resources in places 1-5 and places 33-37 and Strategic and Luxury resources in places 6-32.

But, I want to include all 39-42 resources if possible, and most my resources are strategic resources. Do you think it would work if I place Strategic and luxury resources in places 1-32 and Bonus resources in 33-42? Since 1+32 = 33, 2+32= 34,...... and the "magical resource" will be a bonus resource and that won't affect gameplay... ( i am not sure if I completely understand the mechanics of embryodead's solution....)

Oh yeah, that one. :ack:
As long as you don't have more than 21 luxuries and strategic resources (which is a lot), just follow ED's model. If you have more than that, you may not be able to get around it.

edit: TLC, didn't somebody figure out that if you use indices in intervals of 16 you can keep adding more resources? Meaning after 43, you leave 16 unused spaces, then use the next 16, etc. I would test it, but I'm feeling a little lazy ATM. :p

If someone did, they forgot to tell me. :p

uh-oh :(

I take it you mean I have to follow ED's model exactly? I can't get around it by sticking my bonus resources at places 33-42 and strategic and luxuries resources at 1-32?

That brings me back to my 2nd question. What if I have some of my resources share the same graphics/icon? Can i then have more then 21 luxuries and strategic resources? I am wondering if this resource overflow thing limit me to having 21 luxuries and strategic resources in the game or having 21 luxuries and strategic resources in the resource.pcx
