What is the maximum map size that can be created for Civ 4? Thanks for any info.

Whatever your computer can handle. There might be a hardcoded limit but believe me, you're not going to find it.

Unfortunently atleast my computer can't handle ultra-super-mega-giga maps (I've tried :D)
Even if you can get it to work it'll be slow if the map is too large, esp in modern times.

Civ 4 can handle coordinates at least to width=256, which is 1024 plots across. I can just barely generate a 1024x16 plot map on my laptop with 1gig total / 700 meg free before starting civiv.

If you want to find out just how large a map your system can handle, my SmartMap script will let you select your own size up to 256x256 map coords (1024x1024 plots). At more than a million plots, compare that to the usual 'huge' size map which comes in with 10,240 plots. So if you were able to generate that size map, you'd have just over 100 X the area of huge.

I wouldn't get too excited if I were you. The current Huge size is only 128 x 80 tiles and most people have a hard time playing on it. You're not going to end up with some monstrous map size, unless of course you happen to have an IBM mainframe you can play it on.

Lol, I just made a 1000x1000 map with Atlas... It took more than 5 minutes and the map file turned out to be 85 MB !!

A 1600x1600 map took half an hour and is 218MB big.
Don't expect to be able to play such a map this decade. :|

Just curious, how many mg is a civ3 map with 1 million plots?
Boggles the mind to think of such maps. I wonder if the government has a computer that can do it.:mischief:
Anyone heard of Sharp's 3d lcd moniter to be released this year? Imagine if civ4 was set up to work on it. Oh but that will take even more RAM than it already does.

i can only imagine where this tread is going. let's find the biggest baddest computer possible, and see how big of a map we can make!

Okay, so what is the largest size map that is practical? I find the huge map size in Civ 4 to be too small for the kinds of custom world's I like to build.

That depends on your computer charlesolmsted. There's no one size fits all.

Okay, here's my rig: P IV 3.0, 2 gigs of RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro.

All you can do is keep increasing the size until your computer can't handle it anymore. The file is CIV4WorldInfo.xml in your Assets/XML/GameInfo folder.

how many civs can you have on the map. i tried changing it to 20 but there is always only 18

That's because we cannot currently play against more than 18 Civs max. That number is hardcoded into the program and unless and until Firaxis changes it so that we mere mortals can decide how many Civs we want to (or can) play against, you're pretty much stuck with 18 as the maximum number of players to go against.

There's a 65 Civ mod that Al Costa is working on, but again, you'll be able to choose which 18 Civs from the 65 you want to go up against. Hopefully when the SDK comes out, we'll be able to add more Civs to the game.

There's not much point in having more than 18 civs when that's all there is in the game. I certainly can't see playing against two versions of the same civ, why bother?
