Today my father and I flew up to Harvard and we spoke to the Dean. I showed him my grade (mostly A's and B's), and my personal statement. We had an interview and he said he's very impressed with me. He said if I keep up the good work, I'm guaranteed a spot when I graduate from high school. It's two years away but I'm very excited. So how many of you are planning to go to an Ivy League?

So how large of a library wing did your dad donate?? (j/k)

Well it just seems wierd for someone so young to get into a school of that caliber without either a.) a good connection or b.) being black or native american!

I got in because of my good grades, my personal statement and my interview. It's not because of any connections, and it's not because I'm black or Native American. I'm white, so I don't get any special previleges.

Congratulations man! Maybe you can pull some strings and get me admitted in a few years. ;)

You should realize that you have B's in your grades which automatically means you didn't get in because of your grades. There are LOTS of students with perfect 4.0 GPAs that cannot get into places like Harvard, so it was not grades. Anyone can write an excellent personal statement if given sufficient time, so I cannot see that being a clincher unless you are a brilliant young writer (in which case I would like to see your work). As for the interview? What did you say to them! Seriously though, are you sure you don't have any connections, or financial muscle? Because generally, MOSTLY A's is not enough.

I mean, I don't mean to be rude, but from previous threads I take it you are quite wealthy, so a donation seems most likely reason you got in. That or you are lying

Sounds more like he was saying that it is still possible for you to get in. I wouldn't count on it till your acceptance letter is in their hands.

Harvard is a tad crazy from what I've heard. They obviously accept the really studious, the really famous and the really rich, but they also accept people on the widest of basis, i know people who been rejected from Columbia, Yale, Princeton, etc but gotten into Harvard.

Though based on what you've said, I'd take the Deans word with a grain of salt. He can make primises, but don't you don't know until you've gotten their accetance letter (or alt. when the transaction has come through ;) )

No one can get into Harvard with just As and Bs and a nice statement. Not even someone who is a minority. There has to be something more to it.

Somebody is either telling a fib or is not telling us the WHOLE story.

Got any proof to go with that Porsche?

So what if he only got in due to a donation? thats still an impressive thing to happen. keep it up and your set for life!

Do some Americans agree with me that it's ridiculous that even if you have lower grades than the next applicant you can buy yourself into a great university?

It's smells like corruption but in the US it seems the norm.

Congratz for getting in, but if my dad bought me into something like that I wouldn't be too proud.

And if he did, the money might mean two more guys (girls, for preference;)) without trust-funds get into Harvard.

A place like Harvard will take peoples money not because they prefer people with money, but because it helps in putting together a nice mix of interesting people, doing interesting things with sufficient means.

Anyway sending the rich kids to Harvard might mean they will be rescued from neo-conism...:p

Congrats on Harvard but remember that it's nothing but a stepping stone to a good job. Degrees don't keep you warm at night.

Sounds like the US didn't bother to kick out class snobbery with regards to education when they sent us packing.
