Introduction

"I'm beginning a story which we can all write, and it should hopefully never end. Basically, I start by writing a bit, then someone else writes a bit, then another person, and so on. You can write as many times as you like, just let someone else write a bit before you write your next piece. And it's for everyone, so if you feel like having a go at writing in this, do so!

Now this should be interesting lol! Oh, and the story isn't going to be based on a Civ3 game, but should try and stick naer the Civ3 principle..."

-uknemesis, April 15, 2002

These were the first words to be posted that began the NES as we know it today. They began a story which in the modern world had a resurgent Italy and the fall of Switzerland, as well as a nuclear threat. However the story did end, but the idea lived on and took on many forms. Four years have passed since uknemesis posted the above words, and yoday we have approximately 15 NESes all running at once, all of which are thriving or in their opening stages.

A Neverending Story is a game now. That is how it has been since the very beginning. It demostrates politics and gives us aspiring altruists and despots a chance for glory. NES has seen infamous villians and the rise of powerful nations. Though many of those who were here at the beginning have gone, some remain, and despite the few numbers of these old-timers, the spirit of NESing remains intact has so despite the trials of the years.

Uknemesis created a story with no end. The story has had its twists and turns, as well as highs and lows. It has seen conflicts and resolutions, and in this thread I will attempt to document to the fullest and most accurate degree, the history of the NESing forum.

Pre-Forum NESing April 14 – May 10, 2002

Uknemesis was the first of many NES moderators. His revolutionary story began in April of 2002, and was one of his first posts, though he had made previous attempts at regular Civilization 3 fan fiction. His short story “Grecian” was a highly successful story and made him a respectable person in both Civfanatics’ and Apolyton’s story forums. He would go on to be one of the most successful moderators of board game NESes.

“The Neverending Story…” was the first NES and was posted on the Stories and Tales forum. It was a story in the modern world, about a conflict between the Civilization 3 nations in modern crises. In the beginning war was successfully defused as a German and French alliance squared off against the United States and United Kingdom. As the NES went on Italians and Zulus formed a secret alliance and war began in Switzerland as the Italian leader went on a conquest rampage. The NES ending with nukes in America and Britian and a loss of interest. However this NES gave emergence to the first generation of NESers:

Das
Sixchan
EQandCivfanatic
Uknemesis
LKendter
AnarchyRulz
JasontheKing

This small group would eventually form the core of the modern NESing society. JasontheKing would be the first of these to create another NES, as uknemesis’ NES faded near the end of April. One of his very first posts was the second NES, and it is fortunate for NESing as a whole that he found our forums at the right time. He would go on to be one of the most successful, if not the most influential moderators in all of NESing’s history. “Neverending Story, Again…” began and ending in the first week of May 2002 and was the first failure to form a successful NES. It lacked even enough plots to establish the smallest of plots. However it was far from the last failure to grace the forum.

The first signs of board game style NESes were created by das. This was “NES (Neverending Story)”. It began in real-life 1848 and contained rules which are eerily similar to modern rules of NESing. More specifically these were stats, which would later be unintentionally mimicked by EQandCivfanatic in “Return to Our Roots NES 2”. Ultimately this NES was about diplomacy and alliance, and was a quickly forgotten style. However it should be noted that “NES” was lost amongst board games for some time.

The day before the end of “NES (Neverending Story)” was a day which would shape NESing up to this very day. On May 10, 2002, Thunderfall announced the beginning of the Never Ending Stories forum, thus beginning NESing as we know it.

SNESA it was a classic, still an entertaining read if you want to see some messed up moderator non-intervention, or me ranting about pointless stuff and just dominating invasions hehe.
First Gen on Apolyton were:
SKILORD
Rotten999
Civman2000
Metaliturtle
Toasty
Thrusters
Trickey
Samuel Johnson
Commander Steve
Tarquinius
Cap'n Crunch

Sunday May 12, 2002 Metaliturtle uses NPC for the first time in a NES

Actually he was, I looked it up, he was there for 1 post of his nation before it died.
Thanks for the interest, and i confess not knowing much about Apolyton's NESing, save that Skilord introduced the RTOR 2 style there in the form of SNES: Absolution. That came a lot later than where i'm at now though.,

Absolution was a killer NES

Indeed it was.

EDIT:

eq, i still did not find it. could u give me a link to the post where he joined? All i see is the last post of the thread where he asks for a map a week or so after the NES closed, though I could have overlooked it.
