I think having a large navy should matter more. I mean air units have some use because you can bomb the crap out of a incoming stack. Having a good navy really dosen't matter. I mean look at Britan. It had a extremely large navy and that made it a very strong country. Navies really do matter more then how their represented in CivIV. I can't think of any way to make them matter more. What do the rest you think?

Well I do believe that navy should play a much bigger role in the Middle Ages and the Renicance.

The problem start earlier:
Greece, Persia, Rome and Carthago fight great sea battle to domminate the Ancient world. The Vikings even sail to America!
But did we have in the game? This lousy galley can only win agaist fishing boats:mad:
There must a better unit and a building that gives XP to the sailing units!

I'm not sure about the early naval units, but as you develop battleships and destroyers, you should be able to bombard cities that are further inland, like 4 squares or maybe more with unit promotions maybe? In real life, battleships have guns that can fire dozens of miles. I think some can fire 60-80 miles.

Perhaps for that reason also, ships should be allowed to do collateral damage to units that are 1 or 2 (with promotion) tiles from the sea, but not actually kill them. Like planes.

lol Sad but True.

Personally I think the whole naval warfare aspect of the game needs to be redone but I'm not sure how exactly.

Mabye if they make it so when your navel units are fortified. The enemy ships have to attack if they want to go through.or move 5 squares to get around which would mess up there direct route and you would be able to attack them the next turn.

In history, a consequence of losing command of the seas was that trade routes were cut. Now in Civ, if you have a trade agreement for a strategic resource based on a sea-route then I suggest that the game acknowledge that the trade route is disrupted. Other consequences are (a) less gold; and (b) greater unhappiness.

A sea blockade would be very good, but hard to bring it in the game.

In Civ:Call to power, which was an unbalanced game, but had its advantages.
One of those was the ability to have trade lanes by sea. These were marked as lines crossing the sea and ocean.
Ship also had the ability to disrupt these trade lanes by placing the ship on the trade lane, and actively disrupt it.

This would augment game play by
1) Creating commerce from continent to continent
2) You can blockade trade lanes, and weaken commerce

Sounds good for me. But it doesn't fit to the chaotic (but nice) trade route system of civ4.:(
