Would this be doable?

The Rio Grande Canal!

It would kill two birds with one stone. We need a canal to replace the Panama Canal, and we have an illegal alien invasion problem. The US could build a mega canal starting at Brownsville on the Gulf Of Mexico and follow the Rio Grande to El Paso, then just continue along the border to San Diego, where it would hit the Pacific.

I figure make it 750 feet wide to easily allow traffic in both directions with no problem. Hey, we're only talking 1,500 miles long, give or take.

um, that would cost trillions of dollars, and take a really, really long time.

I would rather focus on other issues. A long canal just doesn't do it for me.

I can't see this being practical. The Panama canal is only 77 miles long, which should give an idea of the size of the task, and you're also going to have to raise ships several thousand feet above sea level somehow. Panama may have a few locks, but I can't see them being practical for the amount of elevation you'd need ot get a canal through El Paso.

Just get the Border Patrol people to work on it. Have signs stating that anyone who comes within 2km volunteers to work as slave labour.

Have you ever actually been to the Rio Grande? It’s more a trickle of water then an actual river. They might consider taking “Grande” out of the name. You can easily wade across the water without any problems.

Best thing to do would be increasing border security or some kind of concrete wall like in Israel.

im in favor of a land mine zone running from the gulf to the pacific and then putting up signs saying we did....or we dont put up signs at all. give the illegals something to think about on the way over the border.

screw a canal, landmines are cheaper.

Very clever, you put the mines along the border so when they try to cross they explode, eventually when enough have blown up you've got a canal made!

drat! you saw right through my plans!

at least the illegals will be contributing to us for a change.

That's an interesting idea, however I wonder how oil supertankers could navigate on a river...

It'd have to be expanded, like the OP said. The river is maybe a couple feet wide further upriver, and not that deep. It's possible to cross it without getting your feet wet...though by then, you're already in the US anyway.

I see nothing wrong with illegal immigrants coming to our great nation, who is gonna do our crappy jobs?

Example. What sane american would want to do this type of work?

Ok,maybe some. The other were from another country,so i can't say that. But still, when a person complain immigrants,it is more of a selfish fear of having their jobs being taken away from cheap labor.

You'll need a lot of mexican workers to build it.

Urederra just won this topic.
