Hello, my second post ever here. Hope someone will answer. I just started playing Civ III, I've had it for a long time but just never played it. Shame on me. Anyway, I am still having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to play the game, even after having read the manual. It seems like all of you here are big pros, you know how the AI is going to respond, you all know how to wage war, etc. Right now I am in the middle of a game playing as the Chinese, attempting to conquer the world. It looks like I am doing ok so far, but I have this feeling that when I find a way to cross some water to attack some other folks, I am going to get my butt handed to me. I only have riders, longbow and musketmen. It looks like the other cultures are going to be a lot more advanced than me. I think, (I'm not at my computer with the game on it) I am in the later 1800's and my govt type is Despotism, playing Chieftain. Any hints on how to continue? Also, is Civ IV much better, is it worth it? What's the best way to learn to play the game well? Hope these questions don't appear too stupid. I am really not much of a gamer. Golf (Links 2003) is about all I really played before, and a few shooters which I had to cheat on. Except for the original Descent.

@ bgast1: 1800 AD and despotism; revolt from despotism as soon as you get more decent govts - republic or monarchy, preferably republic. On chieftain you could possibly conquer other continents by loading galleys/caravels/galleons with a mixture of artillery (catapults/trebuchets/cannons), musketmen and riders. Disembark on a hill or mountain close to an AI city. Send at least 10 of each. Use your artillery to bombard the AI defenders and capture the city with riders. Muskets will defend your newly conquered city (if you have spare artillery move them into the city as well). Keep sending new troops to the other continent, this time unload the troops in the city. Build a harbor there to connect to your mainland. Maybe you could start a new thread about your game and upload a picture or a save from your current game?

Send only veteran or elite units.

Another question, about how long should a game last. It seems like I have been playing hours and hours and hours and getting nowhere. Should you be able to complete a game in a couple of hours or days (if you played 2 hours a day).

So, I guess you just have to be patient. What about Civ IV, is it a much better game than than Civ III, or is it about the same? What is a mod pak? Sorry, not too much up on what comes with games. Hope you don't mind a ton of questions?

I don't know about Civ4, I haven't played it yet.

A mod pak is a mod(ification) to the rules that change the rules. Some can be simple, where you change a couple of things, or some can be major, like Rise & Rule

As a result of the above couple of posts, I changed my government to Republic and now for sure my butt is getting waxed. Since I am still pretty much unfamiliar with Civ III and don't know much about screen shots etc. can someone tell me how to do it, where to go to find out the information (I confess that I have not read a lot in these forums yet so if the info is there I haven't seen it yet) and maybe you all can give me a hint on how to get out the mess I seem to have found myself in.

Screenshot: press the 'print screen/SysRq' key (next to F12) ingame and hit the 'windows key' (that's the equivalent of clicking 'start'). Open up Paint under Accessories and paste your picture there. Save the picture as .jpg and upload that here.

Edit: or do as Padma said. :D

I played it every day the first two weeks and have not play a game since. I patched it twice and started a game to see what changed, but never played more than a dozen turns.

As to better, that is subjective and no one can answer that for another person. It had some serious issues out of the box that caused crashes, but seems to have fixed in 1.09.

Well, I hope I followed the directions correctly. If so what you will see is a complete newbie game, and I could sure use some help at this point....Bob

Also, how important are getting the expansion packs?

By the way Padma, like your avatar a lot. Used to have a Bassett mix, with something, not sure what but he looked exactly like a taller Bassett instead of dragging it's belly on the ground. We had him about 12 years. I loved that dog.

I guess I probably should have done what the trooper said and started a new thread about my game, but I gues I failed to read his posting completely enough. Anyway, I posted a save here (#1972 on the page before this). Can anyone comment on how I should persue this game further, or does it look like I will lose this game before it is all over? I'm still trying to figure out this game and really don't know too much about what I am doing yet.

@ bgast1: I don't have CIV3 installed at the computer I'm using now, unfortunately.

You could also have a look at this succession game. Or any other SG.

I don't have it on this computer either. Working right now. Will be out of town on vacation until Friday, so I probably won't even get a chance to play until Saturday, maybe, if I am lucky. I will get a chance to check in at the forum however, and perhaps read up on how to play the game over the next couple days though. I am finding that this game can get addicting quite quickly.

bgast1: I hope you have another copy of that save. Our file server has crashed, and we may suffer some data loss as we recover/replace it. :(

In any case, I doubt anyone will be able to download it over the next few days, at least.

(Another good reason for using third-party storage systems. I think ImageShack and/or PhotoBucket allow files other than images to be uploaded and linked to.)

Padma-- I have a couple of copies. So that is why no one was able to really respond. My bad. It will do me good to figure out how to upload again, this was my first experience at it. Perhaps I will even figure out how to put up an Avatar as well. One of these days maybe I will PM you as I have always wanted to run Linux and have had several distros over the years but never had the box or hard drive space to really make it work on one. Now I do.

bgast1, do start your own thread for it as that is another reason it, just got lost. I only just read the post that mentioned it.

This thread is ever moving and has so many poster asking questions, an on going discussion can be missed. Works best for one shot questions.
