Ok well maybe not really but I think this is pretty cool
I made a fireclub and a torch and gave it to couple of units.

They look pretty cool in game, though no dynamic lighting of course
There are two zips, one contains the swordsman and the warrior units with the torch, the other contains just the torch and the fireclub (which is just the same club the warrior has but separate and with the fire).
I explain in more detail (for those interested) how I did this in the spoiler.
So first of all there are still two minor issues with adding fire like this. One is that the fire doesn't follow the laws of physics (though nothing we can do about it), take a look at the swordsman in the next shot. Another issue is that for some reason the fire that I added to the warrior is obscured by the warrior himself (again take a look at the screenshot), though not by other units or the environment. I don't know if this is the result of the warrior model, or the club model or something else, but it didn't happen with the torch on the swordsman.
Anyway, the thing about effects is that for some reason when I open them in the NIF viewer (they're found in art/effects folder) and try to move them or rotate them they don't seem to respond (only when I scale them do I see the effect). I don't know if this is simply a case of the viewer not properly refreshing or the effect actually not moving but in either case it makes it very difficult to work with them.
What I ended up doing is putting the torch (or the club) into the effects file and properly aligning it with the effect, as oppose to aligning the effect with the torch. Then when I add this file to a unit I move its entire scene root (with the torch and all the effects nodes) to the hand or the arm or wherever. And to position/orient it properly I manipulate the scene root instead of the torch and the effects themselves. You can check out the NIF files to see how I've done it.

Spoiler How I created the torch :
