I've played hundreds of games, but I still don't understand how this works in the game....for instance current game its 1200 AD (marathon speed) and I'm micromanaging everything..under financial advisor it tells me I've 38% Inflation.

38% per turn? Per year? Per decade? 38% since the game started?

Very confusing, if anyone knows for sure how this is calculated, and what the "38%" refers to, I'd be most grateful.

Thanks in advance...

Drew Bledsoe.

It is since the game started. You dont have to worry about this at all. Its just a balancing act behind the scenes. There is nothing you can do to decrease or increase it.

Inflation = (a percentage that increases with time) * (city maintenance + civic upkeep). That means you can lower the effects of inflation by building courthouses / Forbidden Palace / Versailles, and using State Property to lower city maintenance costs, and by switching to civics with lower upkeep.

If you want to modify the game parameters for inflation, see this post.

@The Tyrant

that's not what the manual says. It says that at a certain point in the game (dependant on game speed and difficulty) inflation will begin at a low point, and turn by turn very slowly go up until hitting it's maximum point late in the game. I'm not sure where you get that formula, can you explain?

Per turn, look at popup help when mousing over Inflation. Check out Inflation-what is it?

Not a very informative thread though, is it?

All I care about is if the inflation affects the AI equally...

IMHO inflation isn't really a game-breaking statistic, more like a minor annoyance. Odds are if you're being crippled by inflation, you need to re-evaluate your gameplay as it is.

No it doesn't unless you're playng at settler level. At all other difficulty levels inflation is lower for the AI than the human. In any case it's a trivial expense unless you play way beyond 2050.

My inflations always become very large when I go for domination victories. On larger maps I end up with inflation expenses at several thousand gold a turn. I end up with inflation expenses outweighing all other expenses combined with relatively small empires (30-40 cities). It seems to keep from very large empires without a lot of financial support. I would not call it a small or ignorable game mechanic by any stretch.

There is however nothing you can do about it, (short of removing it from the code... which is dubious). So just keep in mind that you can have too big of an empire even after the initial expansions, and run into the same kind of no-scientific growth/strike problems to keep from going bankrupt.

I hate inflation, because I always turn off the time-"victory" and it sometimes happens that a game lasts much longer than 2050. Because I also prefere large empires I get inflations rates of up to 90% and which make up several 1000 gold.
