Hi there.

I am attempting (Not sure if Goldflash wants to help, I know he is interested ;) )
to make a scenario based on the Game Pirates of the Spanish Main by Wizkids.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/pirates/default.asp

It is basicaly a game were you play with cardboard ships and sail around collecting Gold, sinking enemy etc. Quite a fun strategy game.

Ok, ideas for it (those of you who play Pirates of the Spanish Main will know how these match)

Instead of Attack, use the bombard for the number for the cannon, and the hit per turn for how many cannon's it can hit with (masts).

The hit points will symbolize the amount of mast (So for a sloop with one mast it has 1 hp, and a large ship of the line has 5).

You may not be able to build settlers, you just start with one on an island to build it for your 'home' island.

Very few (maybe one for each civ) land units.

Civs are

England
Spain
France
Dutch (though they are not in the game but maybe..)
Pirates (Maybe in different factions)

Maybe later on...

Barbary Coast, Jade Rebellion.

Now, in Pirates you cannot build ships (though a 'modded' version me and my friends have been playing you can)

But in Civ you have to so here some ideas for building units.

Ships cost people (like settlers) to build (as to man ths ship), different amounts for the sizes. This is because cityies reaslisticaly in this are would nowhere near be as big.

Same with foot units.

The amount of rows to build a ship is the amount on the card.

I am not sure if we should be able to build specific ships or just generalize them.

We will be using alot of ships so if anyone knows of hidden age of sail ships...

GoldFlash, I have a neat little tool that can turn things into flics, we could make LH of differen major factions (like you suggusted having a 'Calico Cat' faction we have her as a lh...)

Any ideas for those of you who play 'Pirates of the spanish main'?

Oh yes, as far as I am concerened, this can only be inVanilla, I tried to get C3C, but to no avail... :(

Yeah, sure, I'll help. Just not right now. I'm too busy being sick.

Go get yerself conquests. Do what you have to do.

Thanks!

I probably will get C3C off Amazon or something.

Anyways, I thought I might post this here.

I am working on a 3 masted schooner (Like the one I asked Ornthanc for), and want to see if it is quality enough.

Here... As far as I can tell it just needs a railing.

Opinions please?

Well, I doubt the Railing would be visiable in civ scale... aslo, textures... If you're doing this in PoV Ray spam aaglo and Orthanc if you need help.

Ive downloaded Pov Ray but looks to comlicated :p but I am to lazy at this time to learn it.

That link I posted is to a better pic.

Better angle, etc.

Zoomed out it kinda looks the HMS Serapis (I moddeled it off of the ont from the Barbary coast, of what was it? Oh yes, the HMS Granville).

I just am having one hard time with getting it storyboards into flics, ah.

Oh well.

stil llooks like textures are needed...

And good luck getting a hold of Muffins...

Yeh, hmm. I would use textures but not sure how exactly to get them all to line up etc. I tried creating one for the area where people get down to the next deck but it got all dostorted

Here, let me get another pic.
Thanks Odin! He might be a musketeer or something.

GoldFlash, do you know how to get cannons to be able to bombard when loaded on ships? If there is a way they can act as 'cannoneers'.

Ok A close up, plus it at civscale.

Also the unit I modeled it off of (not the colours though).

Ideas for Leaders

English

Admiral Blake

Given the title “General of the Sea” by the Crown, Admiral Blake is the supreme commander of the English fleets. With a selfless sense of duty, he has created the greatest naval force the world has seen, and yet he is still considered a gentleman, a sailor, and a scholar.

Barbary Coast

or

Administrator Scott Bradley

Scott Bratley is Governor Lynch's secret to keeping the Empire's interests prospering in the Caribbean. Administrator Bratley is solely responsible for the smooth working of the fleet and the thriving trade, and seems able to summon resources out of thin air.

Crimson Coast

I can redily turn either into flics.

Americans.

John Paul Jones (don't like this guy but for the sense of historical accuracy...)

A hero of the new revolution, but considered a pirate by the English, John Paul Jones took the fight directly to the king, even sinking ships within European waters.

or

Commodore Matthew Perry

Jade rebellion

Commodore Perry docked near Tokyo and demanded an audience with the emperor, opening up Japan to the West. But it also earned the wrath of the Jade Rebellion, who saw only more imperial trouble.

French

Amiral Gaston de St. Croix (Crew)

Barbary Coast

Made an amiral because of his victories over the English in the New World, Gaston was transferred to the Barbary Coast, where he has established his presence with the ladies in court as well as with France’s enemies at sea.

or

Amiral Stephan Dupuy

Crimson Coast

Given the choice, Amiral Dupuy would much rather wear an ordinary sailor's attire than his fussy dress uniform, and he prefers to stand on the deck of his ship in a raging storm than to attend tedious staff meetings in Paris. Truly a sailor’s sailor, Dupuy's experience and intelligence have proved him worthy of his rank.

Spanish

Almirante Devante del Nero

Spanish Main

Almirante del Nero, commander of the Armada de Barlavento, is a man driven almost mad by his zeal to rid the Spanish Main of pirates. To fail will be to fail his duty to God. His vision is so singular that he even secretly corresponds with his nation's enemy, Governor Lynch of Jamaica.

or

Admiral Alarico Castro

Barbary Coast
Promoted and transferred to the Barbary Coast, Admiral Castro’s plans to destroy every Castilian who opposed him has softened, as he has become a welcome fixture in the royal court and drawing rooms of a new Spain.

Pirates(in different Factions)

Jack Hawkins

Once per turn before you give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given the same action twice. This ship’s crew cannot be eliminated unless she sinks.

There are more stories about Jack Hawkins' adventures than seem possible given his age. He has taken more treasure and ships than any other pirate in the Caribbean, yet he is always broke and looking for a new ship. He courts only the most beautiful—and deadly—women, with more than his fair share of love-hate relationships, emphasis "hate."

Crimson Angel

A magnificent creature drenched in the blood of her enemies, Crimson Angel is from either heaven or hell, depending on your point of view. She attacks crowns and pirates alike, seemingly loyal to none but her own. Even then, she rewards betrayal with swift and deadly vengeance, but her word is legend on the Crimson Coast.

Jean Laffiete

The Gentleman Pirate is so infamous in New Orleans that the French, American and Spanish leaders all have placed a bounty on his head. He has honored them with a bounty in return.

Poor English, seems like everybody hates them..

For everyone else we should make GLs.

Captain Blackheart

Angus Skyme came to the Spanish Main in the brig of HMS Prudence. He escaped the gallows and gathered the roughest crew in the Caribbean. Blackheart shows no quarter to his victims or crew, and he has killed many of both for his amusement and profit. He still bears the scar from the duel he fought with Hawkins over Lady Arcadia de Sol.

El Fantasma

Sailing into and out of the mists, El Fantasma uses stealth as his major weapon. None know for sure whether he and his crew are even human — they seem to appear and disappear at will and are almost impossible to hit with cannons.

Genny Gallows

Captain Gallows has hated England since the day she watched her father's neck stretched. She will attack any ship, but relishes hurting England the most. Her crew would follow her to the gates of hell, both because of her leadership and her connections on the Spanish Main.

What of those should be leaders Goldflash?

Also I am thinking of these civ colours.

Spain=Oarnge
England=Red or more likely white
France=Dark Blue
US=Blue
Pirates=Black
If used
Barbary Coarsairs=Burgundy
Jade rebellion=darkish green.

PS, just traded my cousin for The Constitution, now my most expensive ship :p.

I'd defiently have several Pirate factions, but keep it to the Caribbean and up the American coast some... You have to keep in mind that Wiz Kids seem to have set the game too late in history, around 1800ish. The Pirate Heydey was from about 1650 to 1725 or so.

Okay, Anyway.. Pirate Factions

Black Pirates - Captian Blackheart - Black
PPDJ_045a.jpg

Check out his Neato new pic for the Cursed set.
These guys are your classic not very nice Pirates. Their start should be in the Cayman Islands, I think, or on some deserted part of Cuba.

Cursed Pirates - El Fantasma - Dark Red
PPSC_136.jpg

Thats from the SCS set. He's in the Super Rare Packs. I have one, by the way. Made my mostly dupes box all worth it.

Anyway, the Cursed are all undead or Ghosty pirates... they get sea monsters, too! Thier start some lonely stretch of the Yucatan.

Bayou Pirates- Jean Lafitte - Dark Green
PPRV_015.jpg

These fellers bounce around New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Naturally they start in the Bayou, near New Orleans.

The Swashbucklers - Jack Hawkins - Dark Yellow (Gold!)

PPCC_025.jpg

The 'good guy' Pirates. If Jack Sparrow was a character in this game, this is where he'd be. Also, your character in Sid's Pirates!. They start in somewheres about the Lesser Antilles or the Virgin Islands, perhaps? Or Just on the eastern tip of the Spainish Main.

The Lady Pirates - Calico Cat - Dark Purple

PPSM_PC-001.jpg

Okay, that name seems a little sexist. Whatever. Anne Bonney and Mary Read would be proud. Start 'em on the Georgia or Carolina Coast. Or on Cuba.

I'l lthink of more later.

I'll be watching this with interest. Looks FAB!! Are you going to use those paintings as leaderheads? They would be brilliant.

Yep, if that is legal.

I think Goldflash, Spanish Main was set in the Pirate 'heyday', Crimson coast with the continuos squabbles between England/France, Revoulution in the Amercan Revolution (duh! ;) ), Barbary coast after US was a nation in the medierrarian, Sout China seas you can tell Eroup still spreading. Etc. All in historical order.

What do you say about having 1 or 2 of each nations best ships being flavour units to replace the type? I do not want to have to find stuff for every single ship, but maybe one each?

Or Maybe for the pirates, the one Calico Cat sailed on for her civ etc.

Wish you could send me some of your dupes, you sound like you have alot ;).

I just had a El Chico, and Trinidad dulicates which I sold to my sis so I could get more pirates :).

Nice to hear there is ome interest in this.

So we will take a world map, or atlantic ocean? The farthest east we neat is France, west is the Caribean.

If we will have 1, maybe two special ships for each area.

English: HMS Dreadnought
French: THe Ville de Paris
American: USS Constitution
Spanish: El Guarantee
Black Pirates: Harpinger
Cursed Pirates: Revenant or Monkey's paw
Bayou Pirates: Golden Medusa?
The Swashbucklers: Sea Nymph? It was his ship...
The Lady Pirates: Lady's Scorn (yeh It is from the South China seas but It is Calico Cat's)

Thoughts?

Ares, That would be closest to

This carries 8 (the higest I have seen), moves s+s. It is the closest thing to a merchant I have seen :).

I am thinking for forts having them as units which can be loaded onto a ship, than onto an island (they would take up citizens to build) then fortify. They could have a bombard capability, but not sure if the AI would use them.

Thanks for mentioning that Weasel, that might be of use!

Hmm, should fog\reef\sargasso sea be land terrain? they would be inpossible to even try to pass through, but what else can you do?

I was also thinking of having a map that is set up like a pirates game.

Just emailing Wizkids to see if this is all legal.

If those are scanned off the game that came out recently, chances are it isn't legal. What a shame. My advice to you is - no comment...

Can I just say (well I'm going to say it anyway  ) that this is a good idea. I did a fair bit of testing, trying to balance some civ shipping in a similar time period scenario. I was looking at 4 more navally advanced civs (c16th European trading companies) compared to the competition. I gave them each a flavoured galleon (no GA, therefore not a UU). This added good contol to the civs nature in the waters, without overloading the game too much with a plethora of ships. Each civ behaved differently depending on the stats given to the ship and when it became available, but it was only one ship difference between them all. Galleons, I thought, were a highly underrated yet significant part of the navy, so I opted for that class.

Just some notes, worth sharing. :)

These pics came off the site, I emailed them to ask them if this was legal or not.

Yes, a few flavour ships would make it more intersting.

But we will have to add many new ships for the right type, as there is a few different types. I will list them in a minute.

One masted ships, basicaly a sloop.
2 masted schooners
3 masted schooners
4 masted schooners
2 masted galeons (as far as I can figure)
2 masted blockade runners
3 masted Warships (top deck level)
3masted Warship (poop deck raised and front sail triangle)
4 masted Warship/galleon (like the one pictured directly above)
5 Masted warship (like the one above, but with a sail the size of the smaller sail second from the left, on the foredeck so 5 masted.

Different masted galleys and junks that game in the last two expansion.

To really check them out check the link I posted in the first post.

I'll be watching this. This looks good and I will be dloading when it's done!

GeneralMatt: That's a whole load of shipping. Is the game going to be long enough for each of them to justify their place, without becoming obsolete too quickly? Pretty sure that will be the case, but just checking :) I hope you won't be neglecting the land units and land action. There was another pirate scen, which was good, but it was woefully and overly concerned with shipping imho. That was something that stopped me playing it. Piracy isn't just about 'terror on the sea'.
