Well, all of the "...ask a" threads, I think, have been pretty sucsessful. What the hell. here's another, based on my occupations.

fire away!

What do you do to make money?

Do you go to American University?

What year are you? What is your major? Do you go to a singles/student ward? How do you like your classes so far? WHAT IS THE AIRSPEED VELOCITY OF AN UNLADEN SWALLOW?

Ahem. Anyways, can you give us the basic rundown?

haha

Tycoon-I have a part time job on campus as a "research assisstant" to the campus physics and audio tech department. Basically...i sit at the front desk, and when somebody needs something, i google it. Its boring.

As often as I can though, me and my band(s) (be it school jazz groups or bands of my own) play various gigs in DC. I've done fancy parties for goverment types, to seedy hole-in-the-wall jazz bars. Its a *lot* of fun.

Over the summer, in addition to performing, I give drum lessons, and work as a percussion assisstant at my old high school, helping teach younger kids how to play.

Warman-at the moment, yes. I might transfer at some point, as AU is very expensive

eran-hahaha. I actually go to the Chevy Chase Family ward, where, oddly enough, most of the other DC college kids go to. There is a singles ward in the area, but lemme tell you...those people are *weird*. The family ward is one of the best i've ever been to though, so if you make it to DC, I'd recomend attending a sunday there. i think its on Western Ave.

My credits, I am a sophmore, although technically, i'm a first year, as a Political Science major. I'm debating picking up a journalism or a music second major. Classes are pretty interesting (with a few general educatioin exceptions)...but its learning I do outside of class that I find most fulfulling

With so many college students on the forum, including myself, this one might just be a roundtable panel!

I'll have to go, just to meet you.

This is kind of a long shot, but do you know anyone looking to share an apartment or rent a room?

well, that might be tricky. I leave on the 12th of May to go home...and then I'll be off on my mission. I won't be at AU (or CC family) for a while.

I dont know off hand, but I can ask at church if you'd like. I can PM you the Bishop's contact infomation...he might know something, since I think he's in real estate.

Do you have your papers in yet? If so, do you have your call?

I'll take that contact info, if you've got it.

Not yet. I have to meet with my stake president of my *home* stake, not the DC one...but they'll be in within a few days of me coming home. I'm going to post where I'm going once I get it.

I dont have the contact info offhand, but I'll PM it to you after institute this week, if thats ok.

I did my bishop and stake president interviews (as well as my patriarchal blessing) at college, but got my call when I was back home. Is that a new rule, or is that just how they do it in your stake, or what?

How did you get started playing gigs? Did you just meet some guys at AU and start a band?

Sort of. My first gigs were with AU performing groups...the American Jazz Band, and their smaller, Jazz Combo. We did that for a semester, and me and a few buddies got to meet some people who ran clubs. We started a little 6 man jazz/blues combo, and would bug the professor for more perfoming chances. It just sort of went from there.

At AU, we havent been able to play as much as we would have liked though. Our trumpeter transfered back to Northeastern (friggin massoles :)), and we had some health problems (trombonist was in the hospital for a flu, and I dislocated an elbow, and couldnt play for 3 weeks). I'm more optimisitic for when I return, since a fellow teacher in the jazz department has offered to be our manager

How much loot do you haul in per gig?

MjM-I've been playing Drum Set for about 7 years, Steel Drums for 4, and Harmonica for 3.

Dawgphood001-it really varries a lot. There are some gigs I've done for free (to put my name out), some for 20 bucks and a really nice dinner...some for a cut of the drink tab...etc. The best I've done personally was actually not really a "band" gig at all. My senior year, I was paid 350 over a weekend to play drumset for another high school's musical. I worked maybe an hour and a half for 3 nights. I've done gigs where my band has gotten checks bigger than that....but we have to split it up. Thats the problem with playing in larger groups (often 6-8 people)...you don't make as much dough.

I'm not at the point where I can subsist off of just music money (although, when you add in my other music jobs, during the summer I can come pretty close), because I'm not playing every night. Eventually, by doing enough really cheap gigs, I hope I can "pay my dues" to the point where this can be enough part-time money for school. I'm doing it more because I really love to play for people....getting paid is a great perk

I love the steel drums, how much do they cost, and are they easy to learn to play? Do you have any recordings of you playing steel drums? Can you post some if you do? :goodjob:
