Welcome to the first Major Gauntlet of the Permanent Hall of Fame!

During the Beta we ran one Gauntlet at a time with a new one every update. That brand of Gauntlet will now be known as the Minor Gauntlet, as this is the concurrent one run. Major Gauntlets will typically focus on higher difficulties and larger mapsizes. Just be advised that HOF Rules do apply, in addition to the settings.
  • Difficulty: Emperor
  • Mapsize: Huge
  • Starting Era: Ancient
  • Speed: Epic
  • Submitted on or before: July 9th.
  • Victory Condition: Conquest (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
  • Map Type: Player discretion
  • Opponents: Player discretion
  • Civilization: Player discretion
  • Version: HOF Mod 1.61.004 or .003 (Please note that .001 and .002 submissions will not count!)

The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

Well this might be fun. I was looking for something to make my games more intressting. Definetly going to give this one a try.

Huge map?? Damit that takes out 80-90 percent of all the civ players. Cant play that In the later turns.

This has to change!... plz...

If you want anyone playing these I suggest using large instade of huge maps. I gave it a go but the size makes the game unplayable

I think having a huge map is part of what makes the major gauntlets more appealing. Some people were getting tired of playing all the smaller map games that take 1 hour and wanted something more challenging. I am sure there will be higher difficulty games in the minor gauntlet and some smaller map games in the major gauntlet, but for the first shot I don't think this is bad. They will get a chance to see what kind of participation they get.

BTW, this is coming from someone who has a semi-decent machine (except video). I experience some lag with huge maps but it is still definitely playable, even towards the end game. Also, just to note if you turn down the graphics quality and disable some graphics/sound options it will play more easily as well. I'm playing with an Athlon Sempron 3400+ with 1 GB of ram. Only using a 32 mb video card so that kind of hurts me there.

At the same time it would make it more appealing for some people it makes it unplayeble for a larg majority of people. I run 2,4 cel 1gig ram 124mb grafic and its to slow after awhile.

At this moment the gauntlet is for rich people only who can afford top-notch computers! Dosent seems very fair does it?

i think it wont take too long.maybe 3 hours.it is a conquest not a domination.:D :D  .

i have a question too..can i submit more than one game?

It depends on how you look at it. As an individual event, okay, it's discrimination biased in favor of higher end PC's.

On the other hand, it's about the only arena at CFC that caters towards larger mapsizes. GOTM I think does a wonderful job of balancing their games to a happy medium. What I've tried to do is target the G-Minors towards slower/older computers, and towards those players who play lots and fast. I'm doing the opposite with G-Major.

Seems interesting, and since it'll probably not go further than classical, I can imagine even middle-of-the-road computers to handle it.

I'm wondering though, what are your opinions about the civ to use? I guess the obvious is Rome, but could there be alternatives?

I'm thinking about trying Hatty or Cyrus, for the cheap, fast moving, and extremely early UU, but on a huge map I fear that it'll be just too slow to reach the other side of it before people get (too many) spears. Might give it a try, though. Do you have other suggestions?

Another thing, what benefits do you get from playing OCC? I know about the unlimited national wonders, which wouldn't help much here, is there anything else?

you'd need wheelbarrels to carry your nutsack around if you attempt to win this gauntlet with OCC.

i'm running a athlon 1800+, 1 gig ram, 9600 AIW, and it runs just fine, just turn down the graphics and animations.

finally, now people will have fun with what i play with all day. weeeee.

It doesn't matter how you look at it. This forum is a discrimination against hard working people.;) Whether it's a huge map or small map, people who have a lot of free time to play game all day would usually end up with a better game result. Practice makes perfect!

My games (Compared with the HoF ;)) are not very long, but they still top many positions. :mischief:

I'm doing my first and probably only try with Hatty, Pangaea, high sea level. The year is now 35AD, 5 opponents down, 5 to go, with 5 nice cities running myself.

War Chariots are good, and have a pretty long shelf life, too, even against spears it's so-so, considering their cost. If I can get the last 5 before pikes, macers or longbows (probably not likely :( ) this might look good. Otherwise, settle the huge amount of empty land, but then it might take another millenium and a half.

OK, so I start the new game on a peninsula being able to see Catherine's starting units right above me...who happens to start with 2 archers, 2 scouts, worker and settler. Yikes!
