One of the very few things that keeps me booting my Windows partition is the fact that this is a Windows game. If I could play this game in Linux, I'd be very happy.

Before I buy this game, what's the news of a Linux version becoming available?

I installed Ubuntu here and I'm very happy with it. I would like to see Civ4 running on Linux distributions.

I think there's no need to sell a different CD or DVD for Linux. A downloadable package would do the work for us: copy all need files from original DVD and install everything in correct directories. Most files could work fine in Linux, the only exception is the main executable file and maybe a graphic engine to be used instead of DirectX.

The conventional wisdom (which like all conventional wisdoms is likely wrong) amongst game developers is that there isn't a market for people who prefer free software.

I don't use Linux because it's free, I use Linux because it's safer than Windows.

And as I put above, there's no need to sell a different CD for Linux. Unreal Tournament has a small installer available online, which requires the original CD for Windows to get most content of the game: graphics, videos and text. Neverwinter Nights has something similar. These are two popular games which decided to have a version for Linux. It's not too hard to do the same for Civ4.

Um, I'd imagine that

1) Everyone who uses Linux would say yes

2) Everyone who uses Windows would say "as long as it doesn't affect us, knock yourselves out."

Except that it does effect Windows users as they have higher production costs having to make it cross platform.

Not necessarily. It would depend on whether Firaxis decided to shoulder the cost of the port itself. There's no guarantee (IMO) that the price would rise for Windows users if a linux version was released. It would be entirely up to Firaxis' accountants to decide.

Football Manager 2006 is cross platform (although it's for Mac not linux) and it doesn't cost any more than other comparable games.

Does Wine work? I'm curious because Civ is one of my last barriers to exit the Windows market.

1) Linux is not safer himself than Windows. It seems safer because windows is widely used by n00bs, dumbusers and other people who haven't any glue about computers. The n00bs install everything what internet offers, they do not use linux because it is not so widely distributed, the computer shops sell windows and the people get it easier. Now the hackers cannot make so much harm for linux users because the users are more advanced average and know how to protect their computers. If linux would be same as it is now but same widely used as Windows now... then we can compare the both op. systems. Not now.

But I actually do not care if we would have linux version or not but I think that the market wouldn't be as great as firaxis would want.

yeh do knock your salf out at will

One strategy for Firaxis could be to ask for payment in advance for the Linux version with the right for the buyer to get the money back if the Linux version never will be released.

From what people have posted from the computer talk forum you can run Civ4 on Linux, but you need to buy a subscription to Cedega to do it, wine doesn't have the propreitary dlls.

Linux is inherently safer than Windows XP because it has more internal protections. Almost all home users running Windows XP run with administrator privileges almost all of the time---it's theoretically possible to use limited accounts, but they don't work well enough to be practical for most people.

Microsoft claims to be adding many security features to Vista that will mirror capabilities of present Linux distributions. It remains to be seen how successful they will be.

Has anyone here tried Civ 4 and/or Civ 4 Warlords with Cedega? Is it worth to buy?
Tried it last night.

Cedega 2.5.6.
Ubuntu 6.06.
Athlon 1800+, 256 RAM, GeForce 2 400 MX.

Unplayable. Many problems with the graphics which make the game completely stupid to play with : can see some tiles I shouldn't see, etc... Much slower than on Windows. So I'm staying with my very annoying dual boot. :(

Anyone with a better experience ? :scan:

Good news people! City bars on mas screen work on new Ubuntu 10.04.
