OK, finally, after a month of pretty gruelling physio, I've come out the other side and am ready to commit to some more SG games, so I'm reviving the one I was going to start before the physio got too intense.

We though we were alone in the world and we liked it that way. Turns out, there are rumours of yet undiscovered land that may be home to the unclean. Inevitably, we'll make contact with these beasts. We should make it our task to wipe the unclean from the face of the planet, or at the very least find a planet of our own. Share? PAH!

We are : Japan
The world is : Custom Continents (1 per team)
The difficulty is : Prince
The size is : Standard
The speed is : Epic
EDIT: No culture flipping is turned : On

I will have raging barbs turned on as they are handy for unit upgrades.

The variants are :
No open borders, we don't want them stinking up our land
If a foreign border clashes with ours, we must declare war
If a foreign civ builds a city on "our" continent, we must declare war
No tech trading, but we can demand techs
Any demand a civ makes of us will be refused, whether tech or war
Captured cities must be razed, foreign civ's citizens are unclean.
If a foreign religion spreads to us, we must declare war on the founder
We cannot spread religion to the unclean...they don't deserve it.
EDIT: If we forget to raze a city, it will be gifted back to the civ we took it from

We can win by : Building a space ship and running away from the unclean (Space Race), or we can simply wipe them off the face of the planet (Conquest or Domination if we replace razed cities with our own Settlers).

ROSTER:

Welcome back JesusOnEez! Glad to hear you're :health: again! :D
(Sorry, no time to play this one)

@ChrTh - Cheers mate. I'm sure we'll play together again one day!

@Jkaen - I'll add you to the roster...have you played SG before and are you comfortable at Prince...this isn't for newbies (don't take offence...you may be a Civ veteran for all I know, but your post count indicates that you're at least new here).

(Oooooh...300 posts make me a Prince, and the 300th was me starting a Prince game...good omen).

Hee hee. Just wondering what it means when I have 1,100 posts and still suck.

:wallbash: ... too easy! :mischief:

OK, I've generated the game and here's the start so we can get talking as more people join up.

See the screenshots...

It's handy that the warrior started on a hill so we have a wider view of the area than we would normally. My first instinct is to move the settler NW to where the Warrior currently is. We will keep three lake tiles and have three ocean tiles. This could be a good GP factory given the two food resources. Getting an early religion (even Confucianism through CoL), then a GP for the Shrine could give us some nice early income if we spread our religion around to ourselves.

I won't go through the other obvious advantages of early religion, I'm sure we know them...

Alternatively, we could beeline for a Library and use a Science specialist to get a GS for the Academy...early academy would give us a great jump in the tech race.

All in, I think we should at least do something with a Great Person of some sort...we've got the city to get a couple of early ones...

Settling on the NW hill will give us an early defence bonus as well...a couple of warriors could defend against an archer in this situation, so we wouldn't need to beeline for Archery too early.

Sailing for Galley's would be handy to get early, as we need to know who and where the unclean are.

To summarise, I feel the NW Hill would be the best to begin with.

EDIT : Also, judging by the resource pointers, we are in the SW of the map (resource pointers point towards the equator).

I meant for reliability than anything else. Games that I've been involved with have thus far been dogged with drop-outs.

Everyone deserves a first chance though!

:mischief: Breaking your legs doesn't count :mischief:

Problem:

Warrior's Hill doesn't have sea access, hence no ships, lighthouses etc etc

My thought would be to settle in place, and (assuming revealed land is ok) base second city 1 square NW of corn

Lurker:

Hill would give you 2 food resources, but will slower your settling by 1 turn. But would also give you more trees to chop, and growing would not be a problem. Hill seems better than in place to me.

We can't have those things settling in place either...that's a lake E of settler. I see your point though, but settling on the hill would give us a great GP farm...settling in place would give us an reasonable one. I've always been of the philosophy that if you can have 1 great city or 2 reasonable cities, always go for 1 great one.

Also, sending the warrior N/NE to the hill is probably a good first move to check out more of the north. I think exploring north is a better idea because I think we're fairly close to the south (not that close though...no snowy trees).

Lot's of lurkers...no joiners! C'mon guys!!!

Count me in. I've done far too many warmongering SG games so far, so one more cant hurt, right?

Howdy, I'm armstrong. :wavey: I'll join up, if y'all'll have me! I'm pretty much a Monarch player now, so I should be able to keep up (though these variants will make life interesting to say the least.)

Wow, learn something new everyday :)

Well, my two :commerce: on where to settle:

I definitely agree with 1 great city being better than 2 mediocre ones, at least for the first few cities, but I don't think the warrior hill is all that great...
3 coastal tiles (without a lighthouse), to go along with our 3 lake tiles, are pretty icky - it might as well be 6 tiles of desert. :( It might work as a GP farm, where it just works farms and specialists, but it won't have the production to build wonders with just that one hill... In general, I think it's better for a capital to be commerce or production focused, rather than a GP farm. I'm sure some folk out there disagree, but there's got to be a better GP farm site somewhere on OUR precious island :)

From just what we've seen, I'd prefer settling 1n. You can see the coast continues up by the wheat, so there'd be room for a coastal wheat city for a second city (unless we find something better.) Settling 1n would give us a nice balanced capital (3 hills+cows+6 forests, plenty of food & space to build cottages since there's so much grass.) You lose the wheat, but you make up for it with by replacing the unworkable coastal tiles with useful ones.

Before I would do any settling, though, I think I'd move the warrior SW, to see if there is any seafood over there. If there is, I'd waste two settler turns to settle on the coast and grab either the cows or the wheat along with the seafood. If not, I'd settle either in place (and pray for hidden resources in the inky black to the south) or 1n.

:D

OK...after thinking about it some more, I'm in agreement that the hill site is maybe not the best site after all...those coastal tiles are never going to get any better for a city on that hill, at least not early enough to make any difference.

So weighing up settling in place or settling 1N, I'd have to go with Armstrong's suggestion of 1N...it's much the same as where we are now, but gives us a couple of extra hills. We could cottage spam this site, maybe a farm or two and we could work a couple of Science specialists.

Ooooh, I'd just like to add that that game has Culture Flipping turned off. It's unlikely to happen in this game, but just in case, I turned it off to help with the fact we don't want any foreign people in our great empire.

Secondly (and most importantly), because we can't abandon a city, if anyone forgets to raze and install a new governor, that city will be gifted back to the civ we just took it from, so be careful with the variants.

I've edited the intial post to show these facts.

What level did you say this is? Prince? and a Warmonger game? I'm always up for some warmongering on any level, but there's a high possibility that I might drop out of the game for a week or so in the next week or two due to the wife having a baby.

So if you can tolerate about a weeks disappearance at the early stages of the game, I'm in. Otherwise, I'm happy to lurk.
