After having played and enjoyed a few SGs, I feel like hosting one.

The settings : standard

Variant :

A simple rule : we are only allowed to settle/capture coastal cities until all coastal tiles are under our cultural control. All victory conditions are allowed.

I picked a random civ and got Louis. He is creative and industrious. May help to grab some coasts quickly on start. And maybe get the sea wonders.
This is the start :

Look at the date there. We will be settling on turn 2. This is the closest to the coast I got by regenerating maps a couple of times and following the river flow

Standard etiquette applies : 24H got it and 48H to post. Team work is essential. Having fun is more essential :D

Roster :

Man, I wish I had time for this. It's such a great idea. Though it sounds really, really hard. Wonder if it's easier to do it this way (inside-to-outward), or pangea (outside-to-inward). Either way, very hard, but fun (probably).

Might want to post tihs in the registration thread.

I actually tried a similar variant to this in a SP game (Inland Lake, only coastal cities, Prince) about a week ago. It was very hard - definitely harder than a vanilla Monarch game. It was really memorable and a lot of fun, however. :)

One problem I had was that I didn't have any cities with iron or copper until quite late in the AD's. It's luck of the draw, of course. Like you, I had elephants just outside my city. The core of my army, when I went to get new land, was Elephants, Catapults, and Archers (which is actually extremely powerful for how early you can get it.) You're lucky to have two sources of happiness within the third ring of your city - happiness resources were very hard for me to come by (health wasn't so bad thanks to the harbors.)

I'd love to join, but alas, I'm in a couple of SG's right now and that's all the time I have for. I'll be lurking closely, though! Good luck! :D

@acidsatyr, Kikinit : welcome to this bloody bath

@armstrong : yes, I expect this not to be a gentle ballad. Thanks for lurking :)

@Rex : it is inside to outward, but all the coast must be ours first. Panagea may not be ringy enough :D

It'll be tough this variant. As that starting position shows, we may find it tough to position our cities so that they'll get the resources and still be on the coast. What to do if the copper and iron are beyond our reach inland?

Elephants & Cats! ;) That's what I did to win, though I'm not sure I could have done it on Monarch...

One thing I couldn't figure out is how to deal with was folks settling the inland lands behind me. Even after I had killed my neighbors, my "friends" would plant new cities later on that really hurt me diplomatically because of our borders "sparking tension."

yes, cats and phants seems the way to go. Early scouting will also be key
we are creative too, this will help with cities placement if we want to grab special resources

I'll join if you want me. I have no experience as sg-player, but i have lurked a lot and am able to beat emperor. And this one sounds very interesting to me ....
We must build the Colossus..

The more I think about this, the more I keep thinking how fun this would be to try. But, man, you're really going to have to time your diplomacy. You really don't want to have to rigorously defend all of your fronts.

You will, of course, have to declare against everyone at some point. But how do you ensure that you're only at war with one civ at a time? All that front will mean a lot of targets of opportunity for the AI.

Maybe two lightning-quick wars in the wee dawn years before they've met most other civs? That way you avoid the "You attacked Larry!" penalty.

Just one lurker's errant mutterings.

Rex, you know you want to play... with a roster of 6 now that sooooo's piped up, it wouldn't be too demanding... but I get ahead of myself, this is blid's SG.

I wouldn't be a good teammate in this. Really, I'm not much of a good teammate in any SG I play, but that's beside the point. My time constraints would require skips too often.

Besides, any more Rex TM branded spam and blid's liable to upchuck his andouillette all over you, K.

I am too greedy to upchuck (yet another interesting new word :) ) anything and surely not my andouillette
If you want to join, then you are welcome anytime. Your spam is entertaining though as Fox is not around, I guess I'll be taking more slaps

ObLurker: does "all coastal tiles" include inland lakes?
No, those will break the ring :)

@soooo : welcome aboard. Roster is closed

I will play tonight or tomorrow. Guess I'll settle in place, we already lost two turns and other coastal tiles loose the gem

I thought of two possible openings :
1) hunting->agri->pottery and worker->scout to get a farm or 2 and start cottaging while we discover the surroundings (there is no food resources  )
2) mysticism->polytheism->agri to gamble for hinduism and warrior->warrior (till size 2)->worker

Each plays 20 for the first round and then we drop to 10

How do we feel about a CS oracle slingshot? I've done it before on Monarch with marble, so substitute marble for industrious and it should be doable. I think we should take advantage of our industrious trait here, so this means metal casting is important for the cheap forges.

i would try mining-bronze w. , just in case, we might find bornze and are closer to iron. I would not go for oracle, instead would shoot for colosus and Great Lighthouse, if possible.
I have a question about this variant. When you say we are only allowed to settle capture coastal cities first, are we allowed at the same time to capture and raze inland AI's cities, or we are not to supposed to touch them at all before completing the whole ring?
