My favorite all-time SW vehicle. I still have the model and here it is for Civ4. :) The skin job is decent, but can easily be improved if anyone wants to. I haven't figured out glass so the windshield is blue instead. Riderless, but with enough imagination you can see Luke speeding across Tatooine.

Three screenies, the first from the 3ds max render and the last two Civmansam's SW game.

Enjoy.

Very nice woodelf, your 3ds max skills are fast improving

Thanks guys. This one was fun to complete.

Define more Civmansam, which more? :)

Thanks Duke. I think this was my best skin job since I really wanted to see how it looked when finished.

There is something screwy with 2 of the 3 engines because I tried to just skin one and use that bitmap for all 3. Something went a bit haywire...

Why were you using 2 files for the skin in the first place

Are you still using GIMP for the skinning or have you changed to PS

The engines have a ton of polys I think. I decided to do them separately. I'm still learning. :p

I did it in GIMP, but PS is sitting at home waiting to get installed. If I upload the model itself do you want to see how you'd unwrap it?

If you want the engines to use the same mapping (i.e. all three use the same part of the texture) then it's pretty easy to do. You create one of the engines, then map it and texture it (once again it doesn't matter if the texture has been drawn or it's just a filler), then you clone it - either hold shift and move, or go to Edit->Clone (I think it's in edit), or you can just right click the object and select clone - when you do either of the three, a pop-up will appear with a bunch of options and what you need is to select instance. Then just put the new engine where you need it and do it all over again for the third one.

After that the engines will not only use the same texture mapping but if you modify their vertices or use any modifiers they will all share them and will change together, which is nice if later you decide you want to modify the engines a bit, since you only need to do it to one time. (Just don't collapse the stack or it'll become unique object)

Thanks Duke. I'll do it later tonight.

Rabbit, I cloned the engines, moved them to the appropriate spot and then map/textured it. Is that the step I did out of order? So I should have made 1 engine, mapped it, textured it and then cloned it? Dammit.

I think the order doesn´t matter, as long as you cloned it as an instance and it remained one.

Yeah, if you cloned it as an instance the order doesn't matter, but it's less confusing to do it in the order in which I went through it.

And of course if you completely finished the piece (i.e. modeling and mapping), it doesn't matter if you clone is as instance or copy because it's done, :) but of course it's never done until the final export, so I usually use instancing.

Well that's just awesome! Did you use your model to make this one? I forgot the details of what a landspeeder looks like, except that the model had hidden wheels on the bottom. Anyway, nice work!

Thanks, I took a pic from the net and my old model and simply played around until it looked "right". I didn't mess with the hidden wheels since they were only hidden on the toy so it looked like it hovered in 1977. :p Nowadays I'm sure kids have toys that actually hover using semi-conductors and stuff. ;)

Congratulations woodelf! I really am happy that you're turning into a developed modelmaker. Good job :goodjob:

Now I can go to Toshi station to pick up some power converters
