Here is the second part of the vote. Vote for your 5 favorite civs in this thread and 5 favorite in the other thread. This poll will last for 3 days :)

I still love the Celts, but since I've gotten more into Conquests I've been getting a reel feel for the Byzantines (besides they have a cool UU even if it comes a bit early in the game--those Dromons with their Greek Fire bombard assault), and I got my first Conquests win and my second ever Space Race victory the first time I tried Inca.

My experience is limited, as I have probably not played more than 1 game with every civ, and many I played before I got any good at the game. But I voted for Celts, and Byzantines.

Byzantines Dromons are like LEAPS and BOUNDS better than Galleys and Caravels and can still compete with frigates if you want them too, and they give you bombard ability for thousands of years before anyone else has it. Totally awesome UU!

Gallic swordsman are totally amazing. It's like having knights when no-one else is even close, and they upgrade from warriors! Agricultural is an awesome trait too.

I love the Gallic Sword; it is a devastating unit, you can take a huge chunk out of an enemy with just a handful of them.

Neither I did, I didn't play 1 game to the end with all the civs. Probably tried them all but lost interest in that game.

Heh, my girlfriend (as you may have read in my other thread) is playing as the Byzantines, and I am totally into Dromons now. Not only are they 2/1 and kick but out of galleys, but they have a rate of fire of 2! You can totally kick but with them if you find some coastal cities. 3 dromons and pretty much any 6 units in them can take ANY coastal city! They can easily bombard it down to notihng with it's rate of fire.

What sucks is once you get Navigation you can't make them anymore which is stupid, because they are NOTHING like caravels, and yet the upgrade to them and are replaces by them. Dromons are even better than Frigates IMO, because frigates have the same attack, and have a worse rate of fire bombard, and can't carry units. Dromons should hang round for longer, build them while you can. They are useful all the way until Ironclads, or destroyers.

Alex, you can attack this problem in a couple of ways, and by the way, I like the Byzantines as well, so I am working on it too. You can use the Conquest editor to change the upgrade setting for Dromon to nothing, which will leave them availalble for later period usage, while at the same time you will get caravels to use as transports to operate with the Dromons. You can also use the editor to change the attack factor of the frigate, which is ridiculously low compared to a standard galley, and up it to 4, with the same rate of fire as the Dromon, and give them the ability to act as transports for your units.

I am a military and naval historian and weapons expert and right now, I am changing all of the naval units values into something much more realistic and historical, and which also give the use of later technology its full value. My base unit is the curragh at 1/1, and working up from there. My Dromon has a value of 3/2, and my frigate has a value of 4/4. What should be the correct upgrade for the Dromon is the Renaissance Galley, which had as one of its primary missions the attack of coastal cities. For further information on that see Gunpowder and Galleys by John Guilmartin. Until I can find someone to do the graphics for the galley, I will have to hold off on that. If you wanted the Dromon to upgrade to that, give it a 4/3 value, and add one more unit to its transport capability. At the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the flagship galley of Don John of Austria was carrying 400! Spanish musketmen, plus sword and buckler men for the boarding parties, plus the average Western European Renaissance Galley carried a 50 pounder as its main gun, which had considerable ship killiing potential.

Let me know if you would be interested in my modified naval units list, and I will see about posting it when finished. Take care, and do not let the Ottomans get you down.:) ;)

I'm really beginning to love Byzantines and their Dromons. Dromon to Caravel is not so much an upgrade as a downgrade. They're equally fast, and their bombard attack is devastating. I just build as many as I can while I can.

Netherlands, Mayans, Spain, Ottomans, Vikings

I also like Spain a lot, but in real life! In the game I can't play as good as with the other civs. :(

One of my favourite things about Spain is making a Conquistador army or two in order to pillage the entire AI's road system. :D

I've played Spain in PTW often enough but have yet to try them in Conquests. Hm. :undecide:

Actually, Byzantine Caravels are faster, but you're right about bombard :)

Durn burn it, the Incan Chasqui Scout is available up to and including the freaking endgame, why do Byzantine Dromons have to disappear? :(

Desertsnow, you are not the only one who dislikes the disappearance of the Dromon. If you are on a PC use the Conquest editor to change the upgrade of the Dromon from Caravel to none, and then you can keep them forever, or be a bit more innovative and set the upgrade to say Destroyer, and then have a bunch of destroyers for a cheap price when you get Oil.

Likewise, Man-of-War should upgrade to Ironclad, and Ironclad upgrade to Battleship.

If you are on a Mac, whould you wish me to make a small mod for you, changing the setting on the Dromon?

I'm on a PC so the mod wouldn't be compatible. :f
