What the Israelis really think of the UN

It is not yet certain that they striked the UN outpost on purpose. It's likely, but not certain. So I don't think I would have chosen the same title than you did for this thread... :)

Stand in the midle of a battle field expect to get shelled.

Or....

Can't realy blame Israel with the way the UN treats it.

Interesting to observe the value system in full sail.

Whoever could accuse Israel of disproportionate responses?

It might be a little forgiving if it actually made strides to follow it's resolutions in full. It doesn't have to though because it has a big brother that guards it from following things it can't agree with, something the other side never gets, nor is likely to while it remains off the political table.

Well generally it's an annoyance for Israel, the hundred and dickety dickety resolutions passed against them have never really been fulfilled, and it's mainly because the other side wants a balance, or something they can't give, it's a compromise that both wont be subject to generally, Oslo accords etc. They are by a significant margin the most resolved against country in the world though. Let's hope we can find a resolution that all sides can adhere too, because it's all a morasse ATM. A political myre that suits no one.

That said I do like the rhetoric of Condi as far as it goes. Let's hope this peace ideal is followed up by a peace accord.

Maybe because Israel's existence is in fact due to the approval from many countries and the UN in the first place ? :scan:

The UN is perfectly useless and Israel are pretty well aware of that.

Your right instead Isreal should lob unguided missles at Lebanese cities with hopes of killing as many civilians as posible. I'm sure Israel would also be happy to blow up a bus full of innocent civilians with a suicide bomber......if they could find an Israeli dumb enough to do it.

How sould Israel react? You seem to be a military expert and know the proper force to use against your enamy, so enlighten me.

Four United Nations peacekeepers have been killed in an Israeli air strike on an observation post in southern Lebanon, the UN has said.

It's doubtful that Israel struck their observation posts on purpose. They would have nothing to gain. More likely, the observation post was caught in the crossfire, which serves them right for being a sitting duck in the middle of a war. Besides, the UN peacekeapers were deployed to Lebanon years ago, and yet weren't doing jack. What were they doing, other than observing, even now, when peace was certainly not present?

Wow. I mean, the UN never attacked or launched rockets at Israel. Yet it deserves to have 4 of its peacekeeping force killed?

The UN failed to enforce its own mandates wich is exactly why we are where we are today. So by its incompatence and failure yes the UN has allowed innocent Israelis to be killed.

Go tell that to the wives of the four dead UN peacekeepers.

The artcicle says...

A bomb struck the post occupied by the peacekeepers of the Unifil force in the Khiam area, it said.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said he was "shocked" at the "apparently deliberate targeting" of the post.

The attack came as Israel said it would control an area in southern Lebanon until international forces deployed.

The force will be discussed at crisis talks to be held in Rome on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be at the talks after ending her tour of the Middle East on Tuesday.

More than 380 Lebanese and 42 Israelis have died in nearly two weeks of conflict in Lebanon, which began after Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid on 12 July.

Protest

The UN in Lebanon says the Israeli air force destroyed the observer post, in which four military observers were sheltering.

It said the four, from Austria, Canada, China and Finland, had taken shelter in a bunker under the post after it was earlier shelled 14 times by Israeli artillery.

A rescue team was also shelled as it tried to clear the rubble.

"I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN Observer post in southern Lebanon," Mr Annan said in a statement from Rome.

Unifil has been operational in the border area since 1978 and is currently 2,000 strong.

The United States has constantly underminded the UN, so that the UN has not been able to enforce it's mandates. By your logic, the US has allowed innocent Israelis to be killeed.

So, clearly they deserved it.

Keep it up, fellow humans.

When thoes military men signed up to be soldiers they knew the risks as did the families. The UN "peace keepers" where there to keep peace and enforce 1559. They failed they have no one to blame but themselves and the worthless UN that sent them there. When you fail in war you die.

Is that what you would say to the dead peacekeeper's relatives? "It served them right!", "they have failed, and they were worthless!"

So its the US that kept the UN from enforcing 1559? Explain how exactly.
