Welcome to the sixth Minor Gauntlet of the CivIV Hall of Fame!

Be advised that HOF Rules do apply, in addition to these settings:

  • Victory Condition: Conquest (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
  • Difficulty: Player's Discretion
  • Starting Era: Any
  • Map Size: Duel
  • Map Type: Fractal
  • Speed: Quick
  • Civ: Any
  • Opponents: Any
  • Version: 1.61.004
  • Date: July 25th to Aug 9th

The submissions will be sorted by score first, with tiebreaking done by submission date.

Looks fun. I see it's by Score and not fastest finish. I like that.
Too bad I'm out of town for the next 2 weeks. I guess since it's Quick, Duel, I could get one game in.

So what? Immortal level for the best score multiplier? without the extra settlers they get on Diety? No, that probably doesn't matter cus you're not trying to kill them that fast. You need to work up a score first.
Diety it is then!

High score board shows 189,000+. I guess this won't be all that "quick" after all.

I wish I wasn't missing this one. Have fun!

If response is good enough, it won't be a one time thing.;)

I like the variable difficulty level the best, but I'd like to see games ranked by 1) difficulty level 2) fastest finish

It would be nice to have them ranked by difficulty level but having them ranked by fastest finish is a pretty bad idea for a duel map. All the duel conquest spots are already filled with 3835 BC finish dates. Would be the exact same for this gauntlet. Sorting by score adds a little more competition to it.

Hmm, seems HoF-Mod should be adjusted to allow Fractal ;)

Yeah, I reinstalled it thinking I had the wrong version, twice :P

Fractal is a lot bigger than some of the other maps. I had a decent run going until I got near the domination limit. I gifted away a couple cities before I attacked. Didn't wait long enough and instead of being given the option to raize the city it flipped back to me. I tried to declare peace and give away another but washington wouldn't have it :(

Replace the HOFSetting.txt file in the HOF Mod folder with the attached file. That will get rid of the Fractal map warning. :)

Yes, you are right, but I meant for my comment to be applied for future gauntlets on bigger maps. For example, one with always war and no technology trading checked on standard sized map.

As for any sorting by score, it just becomes a milking contest, doesn't it?

Not necessarily. You can get a higher score by winning quickly sometimes.

The fastest finish will definitely not win. You need to milk your score a bit.

I agree that some milking is good for scoring higher but isn't there a point where waiting will decrease your score instead of increasing it?

I've played a few games with these settings as Inca on Monarch.

If you win in the 1700s (some milking) the score tends to be around 50k.

If you wait until the 1800s (more milking time) it lowers a bit to 45-49k.

If you wait until the 1900s (max milking well into the modern era) it drops down to around 35k.

I would guess that the highest scores will be on Immortal with wins in the 1700-1800s.

I tried a few games as deity, but could not manage to win. With quick speed, the research rate of the AI is so high, that I was phasing superior units too early.
So I settled for immortal and won a game as Caesar against Isabella with 51k in 440 AD. (no milking)

Nice. I haven't had much luck on Emperor and higher with this map setup. Winning seems to take a long time on anything higher than Monarch because of the rate they expand and all the extra units they have to defend with.

I just finished a Ceasar game for 79101 on Monarch in 1445AD. Drew Tokugawa as my random opponent. We ended up on the same continent and he was close by. The highest if you win now score I saw was for 83k but his last city was on an island so I had to wait for galleys.

I tried a few games at Diety. With either Inca or Rome against Peter, it took untill about 400AD to put him in a box. I haven't finished one yet; doing a CS Slingshot around 500AD seemd a bit wierd.

I stepped back to Immortal and interestingly, the game characteristics were roughly the same. I did get one exceptional start (Peter close by without Iron) that I finished about 1650 for 95K score. I played the ending poorly as I haven't played a milking game with C-IV.

Finished a Diety game in 1670AD at 102K score. I think I can do better score-wise at Immortal. This was a Pangea-type map, so I got to chase him all over.

The best start would have your opponent boxed in on a peninsula without Copper or Iron. Haven't seen that one yet.

I just played an emperor game with an excellent start. Our capitials couldn't have been more than 8 tilles apart and I was playing HC vs. Peter. I had him boxed in by 1000BC. I let him get a few settlers out then took over his capital then another of his cities. The difficult part was expanding and growing while keeping him boxed in. My Emperor game score ended up being less than my Monarch game score. What do you do to maximize score?
