Well, after playing a few hours, I thought I'd write a little review on Warlords. I am sorry to say that it wasn't exactly what I had in mind.

First of all, I'd say about 80% of the new content focuses on the scenarios. This is both good and bad, really. If you like scenarios (or making your own), you'll <3 Warlords. If you are more like me and just like single player custom games (or multiplayer), there just isn't alot of new features to look forward to. Here are a few letdowns:

*The promised "unique city art for civilizations from different regions" was lazily done. They have new art for Asian and Meditteranean regions, but none for northern Europe, Africa/Egypt and the Middle East, or Mesoamerica. Why? Because they just re-used some of the unique art from the scenarios (namely the Chinese unification and Rise of Rome). It's great if you like Asian or Greek/Roman tribes (the new art is actually really nice looking), but not so good otherwise.

*There are no new resources in the regular game. Some new resources make an appearance in the scenarios (like Tea for China, and Olives for the Rome scenarios) but these resources aren't brought into the main game (they should have been, in my opinion).

*If you were used to playing as one civ most of the time, it's pretty likely that they screwed up your leader traits. Especially if you like asian civs, because Firaxis was on a mission to reenforce the asian cultures are xenophobic stereotype when they sat down to mess up the leader traits. I hate protective trait  .

*Lack of new units, especially in the modern era. I feel like a paid $30 (nearly the price of the original game) for 2 units.

But it isn't all dark clouds and rainy weather. The expansion does offer some nice new stuff:

*Warlords is obsessed with eye and ear candy; the new music is great, and they put in some time on the unique buildings.

*If you like to mod, there are alot of new models and textures for you to fool around with.

Basically, to sum up my gripe: not much was added to the regular game, but the scenario team certainly earned their salaries. Good expansion for those who like scenarios or making mods, but bad for people who like the regular game.

Those should be easily modded into the normal game. I'd do it myself, but I dont have Warlords yet.

Like I said, this expansion is a cornucopia of modding possibility. Too bad I have no idea how to mod :(.

Hmm... looks like some of us fans are going to spend tonight ripping phone books in half. :)

P.S. I'm waiting for the Gold Team to get on some of these problems. :)

Exactly how I feel. What I really wanted after seeing the screenshot with the archers was regionally skinned archers. That should be easily added but then again, I haven't modded anything before.

Just for the record, the first expansion in every Civ game to date has always been a little lacklustre (anyone remember PtW??) This was even more likely given how high they set the bar with the vanilla game. So, though I DO plan to buy warlords-if only for vassals and triremes-it is the SECOND expansion that I am pinning most of my hopes on ;)!

P.S: @Slax, PtW was a disappointment even if you DID like MP games (in fact, ESPECIALLY if you liked MP games ;) )

Well, let's just say that the developer is continuing the tradition of making not so great first expansion game to Civ series!

Keep up the good work :goodjob:! I'm pinning my hopes on the second expansion.

Maybe a little like Civ III : PTW for those who don't play multiplayer ?

For the moment, I have not Warlords ( Europe...) but that was my fear when I read the first feature reports...

good:
  • all units in stack appear as buttons on bottom of screen... no need to scroll!
  • chariots get +50% vs axemen
  • horse archers get 20% withdraw chance
  • great generals are fun, i have to admit.
  • drill protects from collateral damage
  • guerilla III
  • castles give +1 trade route (unitl economics)
  • city garrison/raider applies to forts
bad:
  • "chinese cannon" in mongol scenario has no graphics (the big red ball)
  • pinch promotion requires gunpowder tech
  • horse archers get -10% city attack

What were you people expecting? They added new civs, two units and scenarios. That requires absolutely no ingenuity or high concept. It is an engineered, 100%-safe add-on pack. The only addition that they had to think for more than 10 seconds about is the vassal thing.

If you would like me to tell you how to get the your favored traits back to your civs. I can, XML is the easiest thing in the world and it'll take you less than a minute to mod it in.

Course, you'd still be stuck with the x-pac traits for Multiplayer, but atleast you'll have what you want for singleplayer.

:king:

I'm always disappointed with expansions. That's because I don't generally go crazy for scenarios, units, and wonders.

I'm really looking forward to trying Vassals and Great Generals though.

I'm surprised they released an XP this fast, actually. It was barely half a year ago that they released the full version (plus patches). They must have been really rushed. (And who okays an XP 6 months after the main release?)

Hm? Must be a bug... it looks fine for me. Looks like the rocket "mortars" from Mulan.

Not engineered quite well enough... seems pretty buggy so far. In my first game (Barbarians), the "Yield Display" got turned on and couldn't be turned off. In my second game (Genghis Khan), my first two Great Generals were both named "Genghis Khan", and now my fourth one is named "TXT_KEY_UNIT_GREAT_GENERAL". Hardly game-stopping thus far, but sloppy.

I would still have bought this just for the Great Generals (heck, I was happy with PtW just for the artillery graphics), but I'm disappointed there isn't more to it. In particular, I was hoping that the various "ethnic" versions of the regular units (Roman Horse Archer, Egyptian Axeman) from the scenarios would be brought into the regular game to spice it up a bit, but no dice...

the vassal state add funny game play... Bismark was my vassal, got too powerfull, peter signed him as a vassal himself, he already got togu as a defensive pact, so I find myself overpowered by this triple aliance...

I think that's quite great, also I got to the 6th level in exp. several time

Peter razed 5 cities and Aztec took 2 and razed 4, and many more that I forgot in the course of the game...

that's some of the many great (but maybe quite subtle at the beginning) improvement in Warlords (appart from the others mentioned before)

oh, and two more things, first, all of this in prince and second, I forgot the new "personalities" of the new leader, some of wich are great addon

(sorry for the spelling, i'm french)

Remember Civ 4 Is the PC's Second most moddable game so if you don't like it...Mod it.

I hope to get Warlords this Friday

Well, let's be fair: they added Unique Buildings and three new leader-traits. And it doesn't sound these new scenario's didn't require any ingenuity to me.
