This was requested for the Mortal Engines Mod:

a traction city. It uses (more or less) mechanized infantry animations.

I used fscale 1.5 for the screenshots. They look big, but they are big cities.;)

download!

That is a strange city/unit, but the model is well done. :) I can see it being used as a building (obviously) as well.

Supaste is my little brother, and I have to say i agree with him; there's nothing wrong with the model... But the cities on the covers of the american books look far too monolithic and 'high fantasy' and don't really fit in with the post-apocalyptic steam-punk feel of the book.
They should be made of metal (important!) and they should be open, not like some massive building (the streets are described as being open-air apart from the deckplates above them).
Essentially they should just look like regular cities, but with the buildings sandwiched between metal deckplates on top of each other, also with a chassis underneath that has wheels/tracks (not looking like they are floating)
No offense Chamaedrys

Ok. What you request is possible, but such a city would be big. It would be even bigger than the current model. Maybe I'll find some time next week.

Should the buildings are made of metal or just the framework?

I think the buildings belonging to civillians are mostly just made of wood, but i think 'maintenance' buildings built into the decks would probably be made of metal... Note that the bottom deck (just above the wheels/tracks) should maybe be thicker than the rest, since it should contain the 'jaws' (where parts of cites to be devoured are ripped off by giant saws etc) and the 'gut' where parts of the cites' victim are melted down and slaves are dealt with etc.

Take a look at the cover of the english version of mortal engines in supaste's post for a rough idea of the shape of the cites... As for the size, you should be able to use the standard medieval design of houses but don't be afraid to scale them down; and don't leave a lot of extra space within decks, otherwise its gonna look odd... Your first model is around 5x taller than any mountain... And i know its gonna be diffucult to make them much smaller but i think it is said in the books that only a handful of really giant cities compare with the size of a mountain (also, the anti-tractionists are said to fortify themselves into the himalayas... Thats not going to be entirely realistic if your enemy is bigger than any natural mountain on earth...) I dont really expect you to make them smaller than mountains but at the very least try not to make them any bigger.

And for details... The tiers should indeed get smaller as you go up in the city, and if you're up for it then really the buildings should get richer (try using the 'medieval' building set for most of the city but near the top add in some buildings form the 'rennaisance' set) and like your original there should be a palace-type building on the top.

Try adding a few chimmneys and industrial-looking things; they should look dirty and agressive... (!Post-apocalyptic!)

I totally agree with you Psycadelic the cities should look like they've just driven round half the world, through mud and god knows what else...

Not taking away from the original unit of course they are impressive; good job.

well i like the cities as it is (may be a bit more detiled, but...). If you are going to change anything i would like it to have more factory style chemnies... I would also need another version as a raft city and another as a ice city (if you have the time/ feel like it :) )

As for getting over the himalayas im not sure if thats going to happen... if you think about it if tractionists were able to attack small helpless cities then they would be wiped out within a few turns... theres a reason they are in the himalayas... so cities will not beable to cross moutians and (if its a land/ice unit) water/rivers.

tractionist to anti-tractionist warfare will happen mostly in the air so thats what the airship is for.

ps.. my internet was down for a bit so i wasn't able to say much the last few days but i fixed it :D

So, the "city that looks like a city" is finished:

Surprisingly it fit on a tile, just like a normal unit!
I used scale 0.8 for the screenshot

the the original moddel it uses mech. inf. animations. And it uses them well.

Here you can see the industrial area on the back side.

I'll release it soon.

There is some other stuff on my do-list now, but I'll keep the raft/ice city in mind.;)

Wow that is awesome; nice work Chamaedrys!
That's much more like what i had in mind- almost exactly in fact
The only things that i might change would possibly the style of buildings; they look a bit modern and commercial, i pictured the buildings in the book being slightly ramshackle- cobbled togaether from wood and scrap metal and stuff.
And extra details... I dunno if it would be possible to add smoke from the chimmeys but that'd look good. Also something o represent the jaws on the underside of the bottom deck would be nice; but it's all just icing on the cake.
Oh and you should note that you probably don't need to worry about being too detailed with the cites, as it's going to be the main focal point and there isnt going to be that many other units...

Thanx!

Now it is a bit darker and has some openings for jaws on the front side. The buildings on the lower decks are now more shabby.
I haven't changed the the villas on the deck under the palace. In the ruins of Europe will be enough stuff for building such houses. ;)

The new version can be downloaded at the database:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=2835

It uses mech inf animations and looks good with scale 0.8

Sweet; now the only things we might need as far as cites go is possibly several smaller versions of the same city with 1 tier, 2 tiers etc to allow graphics for growing a city
And possibly those ice and raft cites... which would essentialy look the same but with rails for the ice and some kind of wooden construction with buoys and paddlewheels at the back...

more art for this mod is being produced then code. Good job on the subs :goodjob:
