How you do it? Because in the trade screen, the vassal state option is red, and it says we are doing fine on our own. Does it mean they have to be in a bad situation, and i have to be stronger for them to accept?

of course you can bring them in that situation, but that is not as peaceful as you would like it to be ;)

I had Germany ask to be my vassal when I was fairly strong and they were weak. Two turns later Monty declared war on Germany, and suddenly I was involved in a nasty world war. I survived it but India won the space race later on. :P

peaceful vassal is not worth it, because they will break it. And I cannot understand why the master does not have an option to disavow its vassals

Ive had Arabia as a peaceful vassal for some 200 turns now, getting some good trade with them. It also seems "safe" to trade away rather modern techs with them as I can just force them into a trade embargo with the ones I dont want them to give it to. Im doing this and trading with them for some techs I left behind.

A nearby civ who is near the bottom of the score list may volunteer to be your vassal. Peaceful vassals are very good, even when they do not last long. During their vassalage, very profitable trades may be had, and while they may cancel such trades later after they are no longer your vassal, they rarely do so in my experience.

An AI who becomes your vassal and breaks away later may become your vassal later, perhaps within another turn or two. They may break away anytime after 10 turns, but might never do so.

The AI will become a peaceful vazal most often when they are heavily under attack by (a) other AI('s). In order to prevent their downfall they want you or another AI to protect them. Most of the time it's a snake pit causing you to war with a far more powerful AI. Know the enemy's of the vazal offering AI. When the 'danger' is gone, it will often break free, because it can do fine on it's own again.

Usually I go for Cultural or Spacerace wins, builder and all that, but for a change I went conquest although it turned out as Domination, as it happens.

Point is, as soon as I conquered a couple of Civ's the others started saying "Can I be your Vassal, please don't hurt me" and stuff, so yes, if you're the Big Dog, the others suck up to you.

Of course, you can refuse and bring them Death, Rapine and Fire. Hee Hee.
