If your vassal researches a tech that you don´t have, do you get it auomatically, or do you have to demand it?

No, you don't automatically get it... you've got trade just like you would with any other civ.

I respectfully disagree because I do not see vassal working that way in theory or real world. A true puppet state is not a colony.

Its more convenient to trade for all their money and research it yourself.

That would totally unbalance the game in the favour of warmongers. Just capture a couple of vassals and you'd be assured of a tech lead as well as territory. However, I do think that your vassal should always be willing to make a trade. Sometimes the techs are redded out.
