did they remove barbarian ships in Warlords?

I've played 10 or 15 Warlords games by now (Small Continents, Hall of Fame mod), and I haven't seen a single barbarian ship. I saw them all the time in Civ 1.52 (the last version I played before Warlords). So is my luck just really weird, or are they really gone? I assume the HoF mod is not responsible, since it's supposedly an unaltered-gameplay mod. (And I'm using the official Warlords version of it).

Now that you mention it...yes, I haven't seen one either. I'm not using any mods, so that can't be it.

I agree. This is a bug and should be reported.

I've never seen a barbarian ship. Not in civ vanilla or warlords.

With all those AI triremes patroling all the coasts, there are not enough unseen coastal tiles for barb ships to generate ... so they don't.

I spotted one recently on a continents game. There was a small island on the ocean that wasn't reacheable by galley/trireme. It had a barb city and a galley. Galley was soon sunk by my Galleon.

In addition to the AIs building more ships to reveal water tiles, the spawn rate has been lowered by a lot. If you play a huge terra map there might be one or two on the other continent by the time you get there.

I've seen plenty of them, in fact lost caravals to them on Terra Maps.

Thanks for the responses. I see that Smidlee reported the issue in the Bug Reports forum... so far no response from Firaxis though.

I've even played several Terra games with Raging Barbarians without seeing any barbarian ships. And in my last game, I was all alone on the middle of a continent, and it took me a long time to get cities on the coast. Still no barb ships there, even without the AI triremes.

In any case, if I ever DO see a barbarian ship in Warlords, I'll post it here.

What is really disappointing about barb shipping in Civ4 (and even in Civ3), is that they never land raiding parties on your shores.

I would appreciate it happening just once in a while (NOT often) to keep me on my toes. Just one barb unit per landing, thank you.

Yes, I totally agree! I've always found it strange that they didn't. Instead of just attacking ships, they should land raiding parties. This would make it even more important to build at least some ships for coastal defence in the early game. Now, I mainly use my galleys to scout, and I hardly bother with triremes at all. Great idea! :goodjob:

That brings back funny Civ2 memories...

"There's been a peasant uprising near Washington!"

A frigate with a red flag lands a few battalions of muskets...where did the peasants get a fleet of frigates? I can understand the guns, but a navy?

The peasants being crusaders was even more hilarious...

Those peasants were pretty resourceful; it's always a problem when they've discovered literacy and challenged the power of the landed gentry. :D

Native uprisings were always a pain as well. However I do miss the partisans from Civ II.

"Oh noes! Our beloved city has been pwnd! To the hills!"

I think they may have wanted to get away from the Civ3 common occurence of 3247984326594382 Barbarian Galleys patrolling the unsettled coastline. While Barbarian Galleys landing other Barbarian forces would in fact be cool, the Barbs are tough enough as is that I don't necessarily think that they need any help.

I've seen that happen, I was playing continents, got one continent just for me.. and barbarians actually visited it.
