Hello and welcome to the October/November Gauntlet for HOF III.

  • Mapsize: Huge
  • Difficulty: Monarch
  • Condition: Diplomatic

Have your submissions in by November 14th, and good luck. Maybe Tone will be a little more motivated to jump into this one. :D

Hey, my Roman game won't last very long at this rate!:D I had a quiet month; no games at all in September and only three submissions for the coming update but I've time to play this one with a week off work coming up very soon.

Huge map? Gotta be the Russians with huts on and a map full of scientifics. Maybe not Babs though-a SGL for CB would be nice, not that I've seen one of those for a while.:( I think that I'll have the maximum number of opponants-maybe commercial civs can make up the numbers to keep plenty of cash in the game.

The 940AD date that I did with the Romans looks quite respectable at the moment, though I'm sure once some of the guys here get going, it'll look pretty mediocre.

Game on!

Maybe I'll try the Sumerians on a pangaea map without barbs and with all the other scientific civs. It's doubtful that I'll beat 940ad, but a #2 spot doesn't seem out of reach.

that's the spirit! jump right in!!

sumeria is always a good choice - in fact, sumeria was the civ I played in my first gauntlet! (small deity SS, long ago)
Course, I finished about 700 yrs after Tone in that one!!

and don't forget that you don't have to beat previous games to claim the #1 slot for this gauntlet. My Roman game doesn't qualify for this so all you need to do is beat the other submissions for this period. However, I always feel that it is good to aim high so go for it!

Sumerians are normally my first choice fast research civ and if the hut popping doesn't yield decent rewards, I may revert to using them as well. After all, AGRI is such a powerful trait. Good luck, Norton, and nice to see you here.

There must have been something in that Roman attempt though, so maybe I'll try a commercial civ as well. Maybe I'll try a game as the Koreans and also use it for my 'unpopular civs' thread.

I'm playing another milkrun but I'll probably find time for this (HM is much closer to my comfort zone than TD anyway). I also like the idea of commercial. And scientific, and expansionist, and agricultural...

I will also have a go at this one. I have been playing large Monarch diplo games over the last few days and Sumeria was good for a second spot but my current attempt with the Russians is storming along (completed AA in 1275bc, 3 SGL so far). The Russians hut popping just blows the AA away.

I also need a Huge map submission.

That sounds like a good game. Killercane blew everyone out of the water with his game for the last gauntlet-will you be doing the same this time around I wonder?

I started an attempt but I still have one AA tech to go at 1300BC and I haven't seen an SGL so I must be well behind you, Scratcher. (Presumably you have Pyramids and possibly Colossus?). Researching CB was a mistake on my part as the first civ I found already had it-presumably through popping a hut. If my current game doesn't work out, I'll roll some more saves with Babs in the mix as well and start my first SGL research going for The Wheel.

SGL's for diplomatic games are not that important - pyramids are excellent, of course, but getting luxuries may be even more important, and luck in free techs from era transitions. I've been playing some huge chief SS games and keep running into times when I simply cannot get one of the 1st level techs!! I've had all but 1 get feudalism and the other get monotheism. it is upsetting...

If you have a coastal city in your core, getting Colossus is a nice boost and will help create a super science city. Stick the other wonders in there and tourism will soon kick in as well.

ToA can help deal with minor happiness issues until you claim those luxes but I must admit that I'd save that SGL for later.

I agree that Pyramids is the only one that makes a big difference though. In my game I'm hoping that a neighbour builds it (unless I get an SGL in the near future) but I probably won't be able to find out until the weekend. :(

Tone, sorry for any confussion, but I was not talking about a Gauntlet submission. I was coincidently playing large diplo games for light relief after a three week histo marathon (and that was only a standard size map). My game was a large regent diplo (not monarch as I stated) which was eventually completed in 700AD for the number 1 spot.

Having now played both the Sumerians and Russians (at large regent) I would have to say that the hut popping of the Russians, if sucessful, gives a better result than the Sumerians agricultural advantage.

I agree with AutomatedTeller that SGL's are not so important, but a nice bonus. My intended strategy is to first research IW at max, pump out 4 or 5 scouts and pop and trade to writing (hopefully before IW is completed), then research Philosophy and pop the rest.

I have also found that a central map location is good for expanding in every direction to claim the luxuries. This is really needed to keep your large cities working (at 0% lux slider) to maximise income and keep research at 4 turns per tech (very important for the IA).

Saving a SGL to immediately build the UN is also good to quickly finish the game.

That's a shame-I was looking forward to a report. :)

I think that Russians are good for lower difficulty level and larger maps. I still rate Sumerians at the top end and for smaller maps, where huts are less numerous.

Don't forget about the importance of rivers and coastal towns as well as luxes. If your base commerce is high, running with some lux tax is no problem IMO. Having both is better though.:D

Finally, I prefer to have a UN prebuild set up as you can convert it via the Big Picture rather than waiting for a turn after discovering Fission. This requires the ability to predict when the UN will be available though as well as an empire big enough to warrent a 1000 shield palace prebuild. Both of these are easier to do at the lower levels.

I only wish that I could predict the year I would enter the Modern Age, the techs the AI will get when they enter the Modern Age, the fact I would be able to sucessfully trade Fission, and couple this with a 1000 shield palace prebuild. I'll keep a SGL in my pocket, lose a turn, and only worry about getting 4 turn research. ;)

It was a good point you made about cities working coastal and river tiles. There comes a point where your cities have little to build and maximising commerce is key.

@Monarch level, they all get obsessed with Communism and Fascism and so I rarely find they have much to offer in the run up to Modern Times. This means that you can normally predict when the new age is possible as you will be the one responsible.

If you have an SGL, keep it in your pocket. I've just not seen one for quite a while so sometime soon I'll be looking for a killer 20K game soon to make up for this poor run. In the meantime I might just have to have a Palace prebuild, with a Hoover back up just in case Fission doesn't come into play upon entry into the last age.

Yes, it can. The key is to just keeping expanding... on a huge, monarch map, Flight and Electronics cost 8,000 beakers, so you need to be able to run 2000 beakers a turn to get 4 turn research. If you about 35 non-corrupt beakers a turn from a size 12 city, that's about 60 size 12 cities. Before corruption.

Or, on a size 20 city, that's maybe 50 beakers or 40 cities. Anyway - you need to keep expanding.

Ain't it the way? I finally got an SGL for the pyramids ca 2000 BC but it turns out that I'm in the far southwest of the landmass (well, I already knew that from the minimap) and my scouts have to wade through a massive jungle then pass though a one-tile choke to explore the rest. I've played to 1400BC and I still haven't popped CoL.

well, I would keep playing that game for awhile - having pyramids is nice. though,if you don't have enough land for hold 20 or 30 cities without clearing jungle, it might be a problem.

I've played at least a dozen abandoned games so far :(

Poor starts, poor hut poppings, poor map locations, no SGL so far

I haven't even made another save than the opening start

Maybe the weekend will give me something good
