Its 4am in the morning. You and your mates are still at the pub. The guy behind the bar has obviously had enough of you all as he suddenly announces "Time gentlemen!" You stand up and look around at your mates. You're all a bit of a mess as you've been flat out like a lizard drinking for what seems like 6,050 years but who can actually stand up?

Game: Vanilla or Warlords
Leader: Random
Opponents: Random (but maybe one more than standard)
Difficulty: Monarch
Map: Continents (or maybe pangeae)
Size: Standard
Speed: Normal (or maybe quick)
Victory: All Enabled, but only TIME counts as a win!

Monarch is the lowest setting that you can guarantee the AI WILL launch, so we have to stop them.

Variant rules:

I'd like for it to be as peaceful as possible, more challenge. No declaring on the AI .

SG rules:

  • 24 hours got it, 48 hours to report!
  • SGs are meant to be fun, so have fun. Make your reports entertaining. We've all had a few :smoke: moves (me more than most), so make them entertaining. I'd much rather lose while laughing that win to an autolog dump.
  • Discussion (on and off topic) is highly encouraged.
I know there are holes in this you can drive a bus through but I thought I'd get it out there before I got kicked out of the pub

Roster:
Ozbenno
FuRRie
Conroe
Xtream Rockstar
Cabledawg

Consider this a sign-up.
We can win "peaceful", just make the AI declare on us ;).

Don't consider this as a sign-up.
No declaration of war? Impossible to stop Gandhi from launching then, since he is very unlikely to declare war.

Definitely not impossible. Hard as a bull on a dairy farm, but not impossible. You can always bribe someone to declare on the space launcher. Though, you'll have to find someone who's equally paced in tech who won't fear his power.

Another tactic is to realize that certain civs are more likely to launch so you can settle on their lands before they can.

Ways I think this is possible

-As Rex says, aggressive settling to limit AI expansion (was that a sign up?)
-As Furrie says, get the AI to declare on you (hard to do with any success)
-As Hamtastic says, Get the AI to declare on each other
-As Hamtastic says, Use spies to sabotage AI production (never used this, so keen to give it a go)
-Left field diplomacy, bribe an AI to switch to Pacifism (unit upkeep destroys their economy)

Anyway, part of the (anticipated) fun of this, is seeing our desperate (some may say futile) attempts to stop the AI winning.

deny anything the ai asks and use some border pressure, you'll get into war soon :p

I would like to sign up, Ozbenno!

BTW, you might want to edit your post in the registration thread to provide a link to this thread.

If another civ asks us to join them in a war, does that mean that we must say No?

Hey Conroe!

Haven't seen you round these parts for a while.

Good idea on the link.

I'm undecided on the invitation to join question, might be too easy if we say yes, too hard if we say no! We'll have a vote once the roster is finalised.

not a sign up

but the other thing you could do is sow diplomatic chaos- thus the AIs won't trade tech with each other. How to do this-

1. Bribe them to fight- it doesn't have to be modern era the modifiers last forever (or almost ;)) and thus those 2 civs won't trade

2. Keep em Seperated- religion wise. Monopolize the religions in the game and then spread a seperate one to each of the civs- no tech trading then

3. Bribe the AI to stop trading with a 3rd AI- they hate that

Other ways to slow the tech pace

1. Don't trade with any one, do your research breadth wise- not deep

2. Follow the AI on the tech tree and reap the discounts, don't be the first to research most techs.

3. Monopolize the wonders- denying their benefits and GPP to the AI- no academies for you!!!

4. For god sake don't let them get the Great Library, Great Lighthouse, Colossus or Liberalism.

5. Find Jungles, grassland and Flood plains first -scout!!! and settle those place first-deny them "cottageable" land

BTW -Your settings-Cold or Rocky will make it more difficult for the AI to tech, tropical less.

Good Luck I will be lurking

That 'cause its been a while. :p Work got rather busy a couple of months ago. I finally had to give up civ, lest I fall too far behind. It's been too long since I've played a game and I'm starting to go through withdrawl. :D I should probably be checking out the Civ-aholics Anonymous website rather than CFC, but oh well. It probably doesn't help that I'm inebriated at the moment.

One way to get the AI to declare war is having a lower military and having units in the que with 1 turn remaining. Great Library should be a priority...theres no reason the AI should outtech us at this difficulty.
Before we get to Liberalism, lets make sure we have the required techs to get Astronomy...Optics and Calender...those 2 techs arent the requirements for Lib. Astro is not only the most expensive tech from Lib, it gives us Observatories which are huge at this stage of the game.
If we can run scientist specialist and use the first for an academy and the second to bulb Philo, then we should maintain a tech lead. Most of the techs, after building Universaties and Observatories are in our 2 top science cities, we will have to research on our own as the AI, even trading among themselves, wont be able to catch up.

I found out demanding tribute 10 times in a row on the same turn works wonders. Except Gandhi still won't war.

Hey, isn't asking someone to declare war on someone else (in a way) the same as declaring war yourself?

I've done the same to Gandhi myself and he will never declare .

And as for the second, no its not the same (well for this game anyway).

OK, we've got 5! I'd like one more before we kick this baby off.

But also, I'd like the groups thoughts on the game, mainly:

  • Vanilla or Warlords (I'd prefer Vanilla but happy with whatever)
  • Leader (random or pick). I think Mansu would be the best fit if we pick (spiritual for constant civics/religion changes and financial for bribing). State you leader if you want us to pick
  • Map type, highlands or oasis might be the lowest production maps to give a hand
  • Speed, normal or quick

  • Oops, I failed to notice the Warlords option. Since I don't have Warlords, I'm OK with dropping out if that is what the team decides. Sorry about that!
  • I prefer random. But Mansa is a solid choice.
  • Any map is fine with me. Although I would caution that any map that slows down the AI slows us, as well. At monarch, we shouldn't have a problem keeping up.
  • Normal speed, please!
