old posting:

Hello,
I am modelling the Colosseum of Rome as wonder, but i have a little prob:

after removing needless polys, the file is still to big.

First of all 3 screens of the uncompressed (still untextured) building... a bit polys more (has ca. 50.000), and you can make a film in it: "Gladiator 2":

hp_kol1.jpg

hp_kol2.jpg

hp_kol3.jpg

and after removing it is looking like this:

kol1.jpg

as you can see on the screen, it has still 7420 polys, nif-filesize is 222kb.

what can I do to reduce more polys? the arches are important, they have to stay. the seat-rows have been replaced by planes, and the interior arch-wall has been replaced by solid wall. all interior non-visible walls have been deleted.

p.s.: If anybodsy wonders why i modelt the colosseum so detaild with interior walls: After finishing this colosseum I can easyly form the modern (damaged) colosseum by deleting all destroyed items.

I think you're going to have to go with the arches as textures rather than as actual structures in the model.. With the destoyed Colosseum, you're probably going to need to incorporate a few of those arches as structures... but for the complete and undamaged version, texturing is going to be your best bet.

With out removing the arches you arn't going to be able to get the poly count low enought. Sorry.

yep the arches could be painted and the stairs and other things :) - you don't have to make them :)
here's example
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=187343
i didn't had to make in 3dsmax collumns or windows - they are all painted
even the holee in the roof are painted :) - the models in game are very small so believe noone will see stairs and painted archs will look also fine like it would be 3d :)

I reduced the number of arches... now the poly and the filesize seems to be ok, but i think it´s not looking authentic... not enough arches, to fat arches... :(

but it was the special wish, that the arches are modeled... I know, that i could use textures to draw the arches, but it wouldn´t be the demanded result.

i think it's good for texture
colos.jpg

you can cut the part of builduing
colloseumrj2.jpg

so the texture - is still samall and very detailed, (ofcourse uvw unwrap is very recommended), and now need to make archs cause the texture cheats the eye :goodjob:

Don't reduce the number of arches... REMOVE the arches altogether... and then make them a part of the texture.... so you can put in as many arches as you want... it would be as though you made a skyscraper and rather than make the individual windows, you painted the windows on.

For the purposes of the game, this should be good enough I think.

ok, ok, you got me :)

I made the colosseum using textures. Think it looks "nice". I also made a button. I can also make a wondermovie the next days, if requested.
The nif-file now is smaller: 75kb

Thanks to everybody here for their help! :goodjob:

It doesn't look "nice"... it looks great! Trust me... at the sizes the buildings are shown at, it will look great.

This came out well I think.

If you make a wonder movie though, you'll probably want to use the original model (which I assume you will).

do you know if it is possiblely in 3dsmax to make a animation: moving round the colosseum, above and into the arena? I thought it could be made, but i don´t know how, and how to export this "flying" into mpeg / avi / mov / vob / bik, or anything else.

Thats alot better! A whole lot better!

One thing though, that little window your using to count pollies just that. Count pollies. If you wan't the triangle count left-click the object and look at the number beside triangles. Any game you put an object in is worried about the faces not the pollies.

But back on you model, its one of the best looking buildings for civ4 I've seen.

yes it's possible, but i don't know how reneder it to the movie and export it to .avi - didn't need this but i'm sure it's possible too

in max you have timeline - the bottom line with numbers from 0 to 100 (by max default - you can ofcourse make it shorter or longer) when you move the slider on this line for example from the first keyframe to 50 - press auto key and move the object in this case camera - the program will makes all keyframes between 0 and 50 automaticly so the camera will move fluently from the place it was in keyframe 0 to the place it is in keyframe 50

also on the bottom of the max you have varoius tools for animating

look for some tutorials about animating in max
if you still would have some problems i could try to help you

and btw model now looks awesome :) - but still you can drop the number of triangles :) - but if you want to make movie it could loos the quality - but in game the difference would be unvisible :) - so it's your choice where the border quality/performance lays :)

I would like to see into your face, if you watch the movie, i am creating... i build a little roman city, a landscape with sky and hills, and then the camera is flying over the colosseum, walking into the colosseum through the dungeon and walking into the arena, then a last overview of the interior of the colosseum... i think tomorrow will be release of the movie... interested? :D
