GENERAL INDFORMATION
”What is this?”, you might be asking yourself. Well, it’s a C3C mod about Danish history. So if you’re Danish you’re probably already rather sure that you’ll be downloading this. If you’re not Danish this mod might not be that interesting to you – but I have tried to make it playable for non-Danes. The amount of Danish in the mod is limited and is always translated. So if you’re interested in history and Civ3, there’s really no reason for you not to give this mod a chance.
Now that is clarified. Your next question is probably what “Gesta Danorum” means. It’s not Danish – it’s Latin for “The Deeds of the Danes”. This was the name of a book about Danish history written by Saxo Grammaticus in the 12th century and it’s one of the most famous books of the Danish Middle Ages. If anybody thinks the name is too long, just abbreviate it to “GDDD”.
Anyhow, that’s enough about the name of the mod. The mod itself is the first C3C version of a similar PtW mod with the less than impressing name “Danization” (INSERT LINK). The conversion from PtW to C3C and the expansion, improvement and testing of the mod is a project on which I have spent more time than I like to think of. So even though many things could still have been changed, it was time to post what I have made so far. Specially considering that I will not have much time for modding in the future.
But why did I make this mod? One reason was to increase my understanding of how to mod Civ3 before starting other projects. Another one was my interest in Danish history – I simply wanted to learn more about it and one way of doing that was to research for a mod. I should probably mention that this is not some kind of Nationalist project. I know that using the national flag like I do is something which only Nationalists to in other countries, but in my country it’s a very normal thing to do. Actually I was surprised that nobody else has made comparable mods about their countries. The only slightly Patriotic thing I’ve done is this mod is to use the Danish “Danmark” instead of the English “Denmark”. The difference is small, but it sounds so much better.
Just two more things: 1) This version hasn’t been tested much, so there might be some bugs and mistakes. I apologize in advance and hope that other Civfanatics will help me test this. 2) If some of you want to post something in Danish, please do. But remember to include a translation for those who do not understand it.
So what have been changed in this mod? Almost everything. It’s very much like the original Civ3 – it takes us from the dawn of civilization to modern times. But instead of telling the story about the entire human race it focuses on a single country (one of the advantages is that the Zulus will not be building the Oracle and the Americans will not be running around with axes – no Wonder will be built more than a few hundred kilometers away from its place of origin).

DETAILS
As already mentioned, everything has changed. The mod lets you play as one of 31 Danish leaders on one of three maps of Danmark (standard, small and multiplayer) or a random map. The 31 leaders govern 31 Danish regions – each one of them with different strategic challenges. Play on one of the larger islands for an easy game, try to survive as one of the 15 neighboring civs of Jylland – or fight back the constant amphibious attacks as one of the smaller island tribes.
Below you can see the 31 civs. Each of them has their own flag (thanks to NeoT) based on the Danish flag but with the civ color replacing the original red. Screenshot at bottom of page.
Another important thing is the new tech tree. Below you can see the first of the ages, the Viking Age. Screenshot at bottom of page.
As you can see there are many new buildings – including more than 50 Great Wonders and 15 Small Wonders. All terrain, govts, units etc. have been changed too. Screenshot at bottom of page.
But one of the most important changes is the new victory conditions. The land and population needed to win a domination victory has been reduced because of the large map, the UN victory has been properly renamed – but most importantly: the Spaceship Victory has been changed completely. Instead of trying to colonize Alpha Centauri, your new mission is to build a “perfect” society on Earth – with a strong economy, a fair social structure, a good environment and free and equal education, healthcare etc. for everybody. Screenshot at bottom of page.
Improving units are another thing that has been given some attention. I have – of course – given modern units a HP bonus, trying to avoid that annoying Tank vs. Spearman problem. But I have also experimented with different kinds of land units, divided into three categories: Fast/Blitz (from the ancient Riders to Modern Tanks), Slow/Amphibious (from Vikings to Commando) & Slow/Defense (from Spearmen to Home Guards). There are also some archers and ancient non-amphibious offensive infantry, but they all upgrade to units in the former categories. Another change is faster naval and air units. Danmark is a lot smaller than normal civ worlds (the largest Danmark I’ve seen on any other civ map was less than 10x10 squares), so it would make sense to increase unit movement speed – I mean, what kind of aircraft wouldn’t be able to cross Danmark in just a few hours? Because of that, there will be no more defeating the enemy’s entire air force by launching a surprise attack on their air bases. They will be far away from where the infantry is fighting. You will also have to watch out for surprise attacks from the sea – you will quickly learn to block the narrow straits on the maps. Furthermore, there are no nuclear weapons.

Though I may have forgotten something, that’s all for now. I would like to thank everybody that posted about the PtW mod and helped me criticize the ideas for this mod. Special thanks to those of you who were really patient and kept waiting and waiting and waiting (you know who you are). Also special thanks to all the graphic makers here at the civfanatics.com (credits list included in download), specially NeoT for making the flags and utahjazz7 for making the renaissance partisan unit that I requested.
By the way, would any of you be interested in some multiplayer?

Edit: Yoda Power posted some in game screenshots in post 14 & 15. Thanks.

What can I say other than "really nice job!"?

Glad you finally got to finishing this. Congratulations! I will have to download this when I get home...

Looks nice! I don't know absolutely anything about Danish history but I will give it a try.

BTW, I knew that "Gesta Danorum" is not in Danish. :p I actually don't really know what means "deed", but I can understand the word Gesta... (I speak some Latin)

"Gesta Danorum"

Gesta probably mean Danish (or Danes). :p

Sweet modpack. I will download this this weekend, but my home computer sucks, so... I'm off to the library. :D

Great job  !!

I particularly like what you've done with the welfare victory condition and will enjoy giving this a go ;) .

A quick question: I was thinking about putting about three Danish tribes into a couple of the Anno Domini BIQs - any suggestions about which three I should pick?

Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm glad that people are interested in my mod and I'm looking forward to hear what people think once they start playing the game.

About "Gesta Danorum": I've been unable to verify the translation that I found in a book, but with my limited knowledge of Latin this is my guess: "Gesta" (Deeds) must be a plural nominative form of a word that could be something like "Gestum" (Deed) in the singular nominative. "Danorum" (of the Danes) must be the plural genitive of "Danus" (Dane) or whatever it's called in the singular nominative -> Gesta Danorum = Deeds of the Danes. And with "deed" I mean "great feat" - not "legal document". That would be a silly title.

R8XFT: Are we talking about Barbarian tribes? In that case it should be Jelling, Aros (now known as "Århus") & Roskilde. Those were the most important Danish cities in the Viking Age and Middle Ages (in my opinion). And they're almost equally distributed across the country.

You shouldn't attach screenshots as pcx files. Almost everybody wont be able to view them. Use Gif or Jpeg.

Ok I started playing my first game as Østjylland. The start is a bit hard, Århus has no good resources in it's radius, so I had to build farms before I got get settlers. That was a little annoying. It gives the AI some trouble too, so I think you should make sure that all starting location can get to size 3 without building farms.

I was sort of behind in power, but I managed to conquer Djursland, and now I'm looking to the west for further expansion. Quite fun so far!

Well Vestjylland attacked me. This resulted in a series of wars in Jylland interior, between many different tribes. When I finally signed a peace treaty I was an established military power in central Jylland.

Now it was time for some reconstucting, and I got a GA from building the Danelagen. However Nordfyn just attacked me, and sacked the city of Kolt in south Samsø. Now I must wage a new war, to destroy the Nordfynboers.

Didn't think about that, but I've changed it now. Thanks for the help.

You're right about the starting locations. I really didn't think abo9ut that at all when making the map. I'll have a look at that soon. But it might be a good idea for people to change it themselves (but remember that changing the file ruins old save games!). I'm impressed that you did well despite the early problems. And I'm glad to hear that you're having fun with it.

Stupid Vestjyder (but they're quite large, though... I can understand why you stopped the war against them). But I must say that that war has left you in a strange situation. Maybe you should risk an attack against Gudenåen and unite the two halves o fthe Empire? (or get beaten trying...). And congratulations with the GA - I hope it will help you fighting the evil King Knud den Hellige.

And thanks for supplying some in game screenshots. That was just what I needed. Please post more if you have any.

Well I'm playing on regent (normally I play on Monarch), so it's a bit easier than what I'm used too. That's why I'm doing so good.

Well I could probably win a war. However there are some point's talking against it. 1) I have a pretty good relationship with Gudenåen, and a RoP treaty, so transportation isn't a problem. 2) I have to concentrate on the war with Nordfyn. 3) The war would probably be risky, since they are bordering my best cities, and have a strong military.

No problem. I'll post some more as the game procedes.

Wow incredible! its like a entirly new alter-danaverse. Special thanks for the rewrite on Vannila resources and advances and including instead how they reflected specificlty to advancment of your culture and history.

Im glad you found the gusto to be able pull it all off, talking bout the Complete pedia as well as full size tech tree. Well it makes it well worth the wait my friend. Its nice get surpriises like this. This must be the most refined and drawn upon mod in regards to using the singularity approach( using only one nation ) ever! .

Impressive, I'll see how she rolls and get back. Ive only checked out the interior so far! (Pedia+files)

Awesome, Thanks again for the random option.

Thanks for the comments, T.A Jones. I'll belokingfward to hearing some more onceyu start playing the game.
And you're probably right about this mod being the most refined one of those that are only about one nation. But I think that's primarily because of the lack of competition. I think I saw a Canada Mod once, but that's the only other mod like this I can think of. Or are there others?

Nah, your probly right, your one of the few to have taken advantage of the idea and made it work to the fullest extent. I have seen the Canada mod, but not many have attampted a single nation rise through history on this scale. Actual the Balance Reloaded had the Best Canadian expierence IMHO (From the real braves to realy brave UN peacekeeping missions ;) ) The guy who designed it was a canuck also, thankfully for me

Still youve also done your nation proud I Imagine ;) . A while ago are Gov was on this site trying to lure artists for a similar idea as yours.- seriously!(so they said!)

Im into the idea so I suits me good if I can find some others, like Ireland would be good fun if it were focused to this extent.
Anyways Im going on again, so I'll just enjoy this cultural dish for now, Mybe I can send some ideas your way on further highlighting some of this mod's plus/minus's for a future revision. Till then Best Wishes n' Congrats on 99% Completion

truly T.A.
