can't connect with gamespy

It could be that you've mistyped your name or password. The game has no warning pop ups if there is an error logging in, it just sits there.
If you can't get your account logged in at all, you could try creating a new account through the game and try signing in with it.

I am also having the exact same problem, I can't get anywhere from the log in screen, tried new email address too and using numbers etc, please help someone!!!

Do you have firewalls? Firewall exceptions? Read the stickies.
Opening 2056 as UDP seems to be crucial.
Creating a brand new email account somewhere---hotmail/yahoo, and then creating a new Gamespy account within the Civ4 multiplayer menu solved my problems

I fixed it, I had to make a completely new Email account (easy with Gmail) then I made a new account using it, the trick is finding a account no one else would ever use, in my case it was lusankya.I've dealt with Gamespy before, if you make a new account and for some reason it doesn't go through, I believe it takes the account name anyways and your left with nothing.

I was unable to create a new GameSpy acct on the Civ IV multip login screen and it gave me no error msgs either.
I remembered I had signed up for GameSpy a few years back with the same e-mail address. It was not letting me create a new CIV IV id because I already had a GameSpy acct.
If this is the same case with you, you need to put in your existing GameSpy login, e-mail and passowrd on the create acct screen to create the CIV IV id

I had troubel getting logged in too.
My solution:
Use a non excisting name. And create a new account in the Civ4 game. If u use a name that already is used by an other member nothing happens no error message nothing.

I think what u all can do is first try to change the email adrees when u creat a new account, change the nickname as well and if that dosnt work its probly because of the firewall sometimes it wont let u connect u must put it in the allow list of firewall

Some further suggestions....
Problem: As you want to log in to the multiplayer lobby the screen freezes some seconds and nothing happens. There is not even an error message (depending of your patch)
Solution: First, you might consider to reinstall your game. Before doing so, make sure it is properly uninstalled. I reccommend you delete all references to Civ4 in the Windows-Firewall (System menu/Firewall/Exceptions). As you reinstall the game will create new ones.
Second, open the ports 2056 (cf. Civilization4.ini) and 6667 (IRC). In my case this was enough.
Third, after you reinstalled, do not care about patches. Go directly to Multiplayer and create a new account. Apparently there is no error message like "Your name is already in use". Even if you have an active account on gamespyid, it often doen't work if it hasn't been created in game. Be creative. Try to find a name, no one else could come up with. Use numbers.
This is what helped after dozens of ports-forwarded, games reinstaled, forums read, accounts created etc.
