Holy Cow !
It's so holy, it's made of gold!
It's the Golden Calf !

It seems Santa gave me something very valuble today. My parents got me really pissed this evening so i wanted to do something ANYTHING. So i made 2 buildings for my mod.

Cheers Santa :)

Anyway, here's the preview:

As you can see the cow is actually the civilopedia icon for the cattle resource from the normal game. I made it golden. I eventually learned how to make stuff transparent and i put it on ukas' pedestal.

P.S. Can someone please test it in game ? It might have pallete isues. :(

Hehe:

"We have reports that the civilization Heretic_Cata has constructed the wonder, Golden Cow"

Actually quite interesting: although I forget where exactly in the Old Testament chronology the Golden Calf makes its infamous appearance, it uncovers an obscure but critical truth.

Until circa the time of the writing of the Book Of Deuteronomy, the Jews were NOT monotheists. They were monolaterists - that is, they believed in the absolute supremacy of their Jehovah before all other gods (an echo of this is evident in the Ten Commandments). So (although I can't think of how the mechanics would work offhand - I've already been at the eggnog :D ) having a tech tree progress Polytheism -> Monolatrism -> Monotheism makes perfect sense (indeed, this is how I've reworked the ancient tech tree for myself). The problem has always been what sort of benefit Monolatrism would bring, but methinks I now see a Golden Calf in my modding future. :goodjob:

Thanks Heretic_Cata! :xmascheers:

The technical term used by those of us in religious history is "henotheism," just FYI. :)

IIRC the story was sorta like this:

When the jews were wandering around the desert for 40 years, Moses said he had to go to Mount Sinai (? - i think) to have a nice chat with God. He left. And he sure took his time. Without his charismatic leadership the people lost faith in God and started worshiping a golden calf statue because it was nice and shiny. When Moses got back he got so pissed that he shattered the 2nd tablet of commandments on the statue.
The end.

But i bet Plotinus know exactly what where when about it. :)

Correct. I belive he then melted the gold, mixed it with water, and made the people drink it, I think, so don't quote me.

Anyway, this is definately cool. ;)

hmmmm.....
quite frankly the whole idea of a "Golden Calf" wonder make's me a little uncomfortable. lol :shifty:

it was such an afront to Jehovah that the Israelites would bow down to an
image....and image in the fashion of the idols that had been proven false, and
dead by God via the 10 plagues, and the death of pharaoh and his army in
the Red Sea.

when Moses came down from Mount Si'nai in a rage he flung down the
two tablets with the commandments written on them, and orders those
who did NOT worship the calf to draw their swords and slay those who had
worshiped it. the Calf was melted down and ground into powder, and 3,000
people were struck dead for their blatent worship of a false god, dispite their
making an oath to only worship Jehovah, and be his covnent people.

(keep in mind that there were an estimated 600,000 that came out of Egypt,
so it was a great minority who worshiped the calf.)

the Golden Calf was not something to be celebrated, but was a shame to the
Israelites, and it was not revered, but destroyed.

also @Heretic_Cata: the Israelites didn't go wandering for 40 years until after
the "calf inccodent", when they again displayed a lack of faith by believing
the negative reports from the 10 spies, dispite the 2 spies (Joshua and Caleb)
that was favorable. as a result only a handful of the faithful lived long enough
to see the Promised Land after the 40 year trek.

however....a really good building/wonder would be the Tabernacle!

i am really excited to see such intrest in this subject, because i was thinking
of doing a Biblical mod after WP is finished. something about the Israelites
entering the land of Caanan. i just wasn't sure if anyone besides me would want to
play it! lol

but anyway....i'll just shut up now. :)

I should also say what exactly this wonder does in my mod, right ?

-> Requires "Jewish Comunity" resource.

Effects:
-> Same effect as WallStreet
-> 1 Unhappy citizens everywhere
-> God doesn't like this wonder. And we know what this means ...

Expires at Rise of Monotheism (probably)

however....a really good building/wonder would be the Tabernacle!
True. :) I think i saw it somewhere ... :hmm:

You're joking. A lot of people would play it. :)

Utro43:

A most excellent and concise post; quite correct.
I particularly appreciate your inclusion of the 2 faithful spies.
I named my son (now 7) Caleb.

Lord Malbeth:

The idol was destroyed, but it was not mixed with water and the people definately were not made to drink.

You can find the whole story in Exodus 32. According to verse 20, Moses did indeed grind up the calf, scatter it on the water, and force everyone to drink it.

Of course pretty much everything in Exodus is highly legendary, so it's impossible to know what historical events, if any, actually lie behind this story. As usual, ozymandias is right in pointing out that monotheism as we understand it took a while to develop among the Hebrews: the stories in the Pentateuch are a sort of retrospective projection back, into a legendary past, of the understanding of God and his relationship to the Jews which had developed by the time of the Babylonian exile.

Oh yes, this is meant to be a thread about a graphic. Nice graphic!
