Nice work

Just in case anyone was wondering, salt was a fairly rare and highly prized commodity of the Middle Ages:

(1) It was hard to come by.

(2) It was critical for human survival: natives of the Sahel traded gold dust for salt on a 1:1 ratio.

(3) It was one of the few preservatives available.

(4) Viz. (3) above, because the Catholic Church declared that mammal meat could not be consumed on Fridays, salt-preserved fish was a necessary import, even far inland, if one happened to be Catholic.

Indeed, from here I found: "There are echoes of salt's history in the English language today. You are paid a 'salary' because Roman soldiers were partly paid in salt ('salarium' in Latin). A juicy piece of gossip is 'salacious' because an ancient Roman in love was said to be 'salted'."

That page itself is worth a look.

Until now, I've simply eliminated the need for Saltpeter in my modding by using that icon for Salt (and of course changing a few requirements around). Saltpeter is, after all, readily found in piles of dung. Salt isn't quite so easy.
